SPACES UNDER OAT ACT AS STORAGE FOR MARKETS

The site is located at Kollidam Bridge in the northern Part of Tiruchirapalli City.

The site shares anchors with Srirangam Island in one end and the Tollgate in Northern end. The National Highway connecting Chennai and Kanyakumari passes through the city and becomes a part of the vicinity of the bridge. There are two bridges across the Cauvery River and the Kollidam. River from Trichy to Srirangam, hence to Samayapuram and Perambalur.

One of them was built by the English. The iron bridge was built in 1928 on the Chennai-Trichy road near the Srirangam, across the Kolli river. The new bridge was completed in 2012 following various claims from authorities. The Old bridge has reached the completion of the designated life span. The traffic on the iron bridge was banned from 2015. People have come to respect it as a historic landmark.

WHY A MUSEUM ? WHY A BRIDGE ?

Temple is considered sacred for all the rituals pertaining to the river.The experience of the river being a part of the family.The cauvery river is dying and it shouldnt go extinct.

Our attitude towards the river in itself paves the fate of the river.The temple of Tiruvanaikaval has a myth.Water flows beneath the main sanctum wherein the head priest touches the cauvery water under the main idol. Sanctity is achieved in such an aspect. Syncing divinity with customs made people responsible in the olden times. There was a responsibility in minds of our elder generations belief system. Today’s generation is unaware about the riverine rituals in the truest sense.

Not a centre for preaching rituals and customs, but a place for enriching our history. Power of religion did not exist in olden days.The river is a backyard for many families along the river. In the contrary, its a dumpyard in recent times.Traditional wisdoms paved way for responsible citizens.

Museum is a logical way to look at” river as a river” than, with religious views.The life of the river must be made aware to all the citizens.The social economic and physical conditions of the river must be enlightened to all citizens.

The life of the people associated with the making of this river must be preached.There are many unsung heroes involved with interlinking of rivers and construction of various structures along the river. The cauvery is a gift to south india wherein it must be made friendly.

The knowledge of cauvery river must be made accessible to public with a sole institution.Creating an understanding by celebrating the river with an important cause.

Knowledge and divinity is a common factor. The kollidam bridge in trichy is a lifeline for the citizens for over a century.There was an arched brick masonry bridge before the present kollidam bridge.

Kollidam bridge at Srirangam is a major gateway for the city. The national highway connecting chennai, major railway junctions and the airport are in the vicinity. Benefitting farmers from this centre for their queries regarding updates.The information regarding their queries is made possible at one centre Soil mining is a main issue along the cauvery delta. An awareness must be brought about in the element of sensitivity.A strong entry to the city and the adjoining cultural entities.

The city is a centre for many lesser known arts and crafts techniques. Arts and crafts around the cauvery river region is of utmost importance.All the arts and crafts along the river would be preached in this centre.

Tiruchirappalli presides at the nodal centre of the state.The city experiences a tropical savanna climate.T he Cauvery and the Kollidam, forms the island of Srirangam, which is now incorporated into the Tiruchirappalli City Municipal Corporation.

The topology of Tiruchirappalli is almost flat, with an average elevation of 88 metres. Rockfort is the highest point in the city.

Tiruchirappalli sits at the confluence of two major National Highways-NH 45 and NH 67.Tiruchirappalli has good rail connectivity with most important cities and towns in India.Tiruchirappalli Junction is the second biggest railway station in Tamil Nadu and one of the busiest in India.The city is served by an International airport, it handles fivefold more international air traffic than domestic services, thus making it the only airport in India with this huge variation. The city gets its drinking water supply from the Cauvery River and Kollidam River by the means of 11 headworks and the present pumping quantity is at 128 MLD. Tiruchirappalli is a major engineering equipment manufacturing and fabrication hub in India Trichy is the home to India’s largest public sector engineering company, Bharat Heavy Electricals

Limited, (BHEL). The urban centre of Trichy is often adverted as Rock city denoting the renowned rock fort temple (Ucchi Pillayar Koil) situated in the city.The city is the home of a lot of far-famed religious sites situated all over the city including the celebrated Srirangam Sri Ranganatha Temple, Samayapuram Mariamman Temple , Teppakulam , Lady of Lourdes Church, Uraiyur Vekkaliamman Temple , Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeshwara Temple, St John’s Church, Pannadibee Dargah , St Joseph’s Church , Vayalur Murugan Temple , Begam Saiba Masjid , Chowk Maidan Masjid ,Srirangam Singaperumal Koil,Nathar Vali Darghah Masjidh and so on.Trichy does not shorten its list of popular tourist attractions just with religious sites but it extends a wide range of many other tourist options such as Ponnaniyaru Dam , Kallanai Upper Anaicut,Thalamalai Government Museum , Mukkombu picnic spot and Puliancholai picnic spot and a lot of other attractions.

In the end “Nadhiyil Oru Ulaa” is an ode to Trichy and river Cauvery that embellishes the life of the river and life of the people in the truest sense across the Kollidam river on Kollidam bridge. More than the bridge being a beacon for the entire context, it represents the lifeline of Trichy in a modern sense.The Trail for the important parts of the Museum would begin from the Southern end of the bridge which houses the information centre,Auditorium, Knowledge centre and a the river ghats that lead you directly to the river bed”To start the museum journey by respecting the river”.

The addition of a minor and a major proposal could change the way we perceive the area? vThe religious elements of importance being able to retain the roots of the cultural aspects of the locality.This is a documantation and a design exercise for the Banashankari 2nd stage Locality at the heart of the city.How does Urban design play an important role in this?

This area was the outskirts of the Bengaluru City a few decades ago. There is a crematorium in this locality prove that. There existed a lake in this area some decades ago. Now this locality is situated at a prime spot owing to the constructuion of the bus terminal in the centre.

Eventually the settlement started becoming an intense spot for all activities.The lake which existed here also had foreseen a quarry being dug up for a brief amount of time. Later the whole quarry was filled with sand. Once a very dense spot of vegetation here dwindled gradually with the advent of urban components. The density of the slum in the area is one the rise. This area houses the powrakarmikas,bamboo artisans, street vendors and other activities to name a few.The annual amma festival happens here where processions take place frequently.

Activities along the gullies of the Banashankari 2nd Stage slum. The streets starts opposite the temple and the mosque setting a straight axis for the main street.

A scenario across the Cul de sacs across the main streets of the settlement. Its proximity to the temples and mosques, has a variety of cultural customs happening .

URBAN LEVEL PROPOSAL - Intervention on a procession paths.

Section across the ankalamma temple in the slum During a festival - The streets invite us into the realm with a narrow broken concrete wall striding through many houses along the way. Finally the temple is thrown open to the gods with abundant festivities, poojas, flowers,incense sticks,slipper floor caused by the abhishekam for the deity.

The Main spine of the area happens to be the Nehru Nagar street which houses the mosque on one side and the temple on the other side. The participation of the people of the area is of paramount importance for an urban level intervention pertaining to a middle class locality. The area is also flanked by a lot of temples such as gangamma temple, Ganesha temple, ankalamma temple,alamelamma temple. The other important aspect being the hari mosque also adds importance to the locality.

The elements that were to be considered while looking at the broader perspective were the lack of shaded spaces for the whole community. The bamboo light tower is an addition to the area with an active bamboo artisans community which inturn has a commendable period before the dwellers setlled here.

The Somari Katte that literally means ”The lazy sitout” near the Bamboo tower act as seating for the womenfolk to while away the day after working at home. The shade from the tower is a relief during the day whereas, the locality will be lit with the the tower after dusk.

ENTRY

v Influx of people to bamboo cultural kendra due to the lack of a village primarily dedicated for bamboo in south india. The urban congestion at banashankari junction would increase because of the new addition.The design would try decongesting the junction that is added.The people living in the slum get an identity owing to the bamboo artisans and workers getting employments of better standards. The urban level proposal and the architectural proposal would work hand in hand wherein, design walks can be organised inside the slums (working conditions and methodologies, lifestyle ) by the kendra trust/committee.

The Market acts as an impostant handicrafts centre wherein connecting the storage and the institute block. The transfer of goods from one block to another happens in the basement floor. he basement floor also ahs an opening to the OAT. The Entrance is also conveniently connected to the banashankari bus terminal thus easing the visitors from the bus station. Any cultural activities and awareness programs pertaining to bamboo happens in the kendra.This would benefit a lot of enthusiaist to pursue a career in bamboo design which is sustainable and longlasting.

MATERIAL E XPLOR ATION WITH WOOD Bengaluru

Can we relentlessly pursue the contemporary possibilities of traditional techniques and natural materials ? Favors natural materials in this kinda designs, especially wood. Natural, breathable, flexible; wood has been a key element of world design for thousands of years. Following traditional design principles, it exists in harmony with its environment.

The site is located on the near THE MADRAS SAPPERS CLUB adjacent to the lake. The main aimof this project is to understand the structural stability of wood and utilize to build a large scale commercial establisment. The Library is the main component, follwed by the archives storage rooms, cafe and an open air theatre which houses a screen in the middle of the lake so as to give an immersive experience for the screenings. Exploring the maximum capacity of a material was the intent of the library.

The primary material being wood, the Library and centre is crafted with double height spaces so as to enhance the magnanimity of experience in a non RCC space.

This is a plan to link two parts of the librarywith a central-parametric designed wood structure, Where random wood members become the infodesk,seating for people visiting the library and archives. The Library technically redefines the way a library is perceived in this area. It functions not only as a pivot between the two facilities but also as puts entertainment programs in between, ideal location for long readers. In this project, the challenging structural system which composes of small parts, referring to cantilever structure often employed in traditional architecture in Japan and China. It is a great example of sustainable design, as you can achieve a big cantilever even without large-sized materials. The wood can be locally sourced from places near Bengaluru.

The roof also collects water during the rainy season and gets collected in the lake near the structure and the moat present around.

The water pool surrounds the structure and prevents the insects from making direct contact with wood. The wood could also be charred to provide a permanent protection from microorganisms and climatic conditions.

Exploring the maximum capacity of a material was the intent of the library.The primary material being plywood, the market is an attempt to reorganize the vendors on the pavements with earnest spaces for all kinds offunctions.

It is designed based on the world class guidelines for a Library.

It has Audio rooms OPAC, Huge double height voids for the Library lobby, Seminar Halls and Book collection for all ages.
