History And Origin

C

hannapatna is the main center of making these wood toys and dolls. Because of large scale artisans and resources availability of raw material around their village. These craft was started in 18th century when Tipu Sultan was gifted a wooden lacquer toys from Persia. Due to its beauty he asked for artisans from Persia to be brought into his region and trains the local to make similar toys. Whoever learn this craft all them settled in Channapatna. Not only Tipu Sultan but Hyder Ali also loved to experiment with new machinery and new technology and encouraged people to use lathe in making toys.

The toys are mainly made of botanical neem which is soft in nature and then coated with lac which is made from the saliva of honeybee and exported from America.

They use botanical neem wood because it is soft and can be shaped very easily and it is white in colour so lac colours are also seen very beautiful when applied on it.

Bavas Miyan was a man who was known as father of channapatna Toys. He was the only one who sacrifice his whole life in this craft. Adopting Japanese technology for making toys, he also helped local artisans in improving their skills and trained them. Since there been two century they are using botanical neem wood for making toys they also used rosewood or sandal wood sometimes but not as much as botanical neem Wood

Wood

Ivory wood is very basic material for toys making. It is small sized tree which ranges up to 25 feet. There are many other names of wood like Wrightia tinctoria, botanical neem, ‘Sweet Indrajao’, ‘Pala’, ‘Dyer’s Oleander’ or ‘Dyer’s Indigo’ etc. The specific name “tinctoria” refers to “tinct” in Latin meaning “dyed, tinged”. The tree is native to India, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. It is common in deciduous forests of North West and Central India and Southern Peninsula. It has very slow moisture and oil content. It is found in channapatna, Ramnagaram, Mysore, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassa and coorg in the state of Karnataka.

Wrightia tictoria is not only used for its wood. The flowers, leaves fruits seeds are used for indigo dye production. These plants has anti inflammatory and anti da ndruff properties and hence it is used in making. Due to its medical properties, the sawdust and other waste from this tree are easily usable. At the time of making wooden products in lathe and the dust which is left over is used for making innsence sticks.

colours are made over here are Eco friendly in nature. Lac is a natural resin and can be coloured in both natural and synthetic resin. These colours are mixed over here in manufacturing unit. It is made in bulk and stored and when it gets over they used to mix in the unit. The coin shaped lac is exported from America which is pure lac in bulk.

A lot of manufacturers use synthetic colours. These colours contain many toxic chemicals like Barium Sulphate and zinc sulphate etc are mixed with the lac which makes it to loose the transparency of the colours. And in natural colours they used to mix the natural red powder for red colour which is called KumKum. For yellowish colour they used to mix Turmeric in it.

TOOLS

Tools which are used to shape the toy very easily. The most important one is the lathe machine. In early times people were suppose to use hand lathe called bikolupatris made by local carpenters. A bow string is used to turn a rotating axle at the center of the wooden lathe. The turning tool is held in free hand and pressure is added with the foot, shaping the spinning wood with the help of hand tools. As it used by hand it can be used with no electricity in the villages. As the demand of toys increased the number of requirment also increased because this much of bulk order can’t be made with the help of hand lathe. so after this the electric lathe was introduce.

A power lathe has a headstock that consist of a revolving belt attach with it. The belt runs over a pulley mounted on a revolving shaft that is driven by electric motor. The production time also decreases due to electric lathe as both hands are free to operate the tools. These lathe are found in small scale factories in which electricity is available.

Other hand tools like Files and chisel of various sizes and types are available as per the requirment. such as:

• Matulayi-blade

• Round headed chisel: Kyuli

• Marking tool: Bayergay

• Bow for hand lathe: Bilkolu

• Hand lathe: Patri

• Jaw of hand lathe: Muday

• vice/tool rest for hand lathe: Dubbay

• Stool for hand lathe: Kalmadey

Making Process

The process starts with gathering all the raw material from the market. Some manufacturers prefer seasoned wood while some get the wood and keep it for seasoning. For wood seasoning the normally time require is 1 to 4 months because the wood is heavier in weight while cut from the tree so to reduce is weight it is kept for few month so all the moisture can be removed and we can easily use it.

STEP 1: Purchasing raw material

The process of making starts with the collection of wood which is collected from the local market of channapatna and then it is seasoned for 1 to 4 months. Government used to provide the season wood but due to cost the manufacturer prefer to buy the wood from local market and season them in storage area or godown.

STEP 2: Seasoning the wood

After collecting the wood from local market Logs are cut into billets, and seasoned until they are dry and can be turned on the lathe.

62 ` 63 ` CHANNPATNA | DHAVANSHI GADA | 2022-2023 CHANNPATNA | DHAVANSHI GADA | 2022-2023

The waste wood are gathered for fire and two wooden sticks are heated and the raw lac are kept on stick and started heating and softening until lac becomes plastic and malleable. It is kept on beating until white tint appears. After that powder die is mixed with little water and added to lac at the time of heating. The lac is stretched with the help of two sticks and beaten to get perfect shade of colour. Before solidifying it is removed from the stick and again pressed and mixed with the help of hands. After that long sticks are cut into different lengths. 5 to 6 sticks can be made at a time.

Step 5: Lac Application

After getting the final form of toy now its time for lacquering. The piece is placed on lathe and the colour sticks which were made earlier are pressed against wood piece which is revolving in lathe and the heat is produce and the resulting friction causes lac to bind to the surface of the toy.

Toys are shaped using hand tools and lathe. Cutting tools are used in revolving piece of wood so the extra material can be removed and the shape we want is formed. After getting the perfect shape the piece is sanded with the sandpaper at the time of rotating on lathe and rubbed till the surface gets smooth and equal. And different tools is used for measurement when piece is on lathe vernier caliper is also used for the measurement.

After applying lacquer it is spread uniformly over the surface with the help of screw pine leaf. This gives shine to the piece. Coconut oil is also used to give shine. After Polishing the piece is separated with the help of cutting tool from lathe.

STEP 3: Lac Preparation STEP 4: Shaping Step 6: Polishing

About Artisans

Mr Bhupathi From an Artisan to an Entrepreneur

Meet one such artisan Mr Bhupathi, who make such toys and comes from a family of professional wood carving artisans. He learn this art from his father and thereafter under the guidance of learned scholar in the field. He has been active within India’s Fair Trade community and is himself an accomplished crafts-person. He originally learned wood carving and turning from his father Madhavachari, a state awardee. Madhavachari, a traditional wood craftsman, hailed from Tirupati, making temple chariots among other woodcraft. He, along with a few other artisan families, migrated to Bangalore in the 1960s, where they were trained by the Regional Design and Technical Development Centre.

After his marriage, Bhupathi was given responsibility of supporting his extended family. At the same time, he began to observe the business practices of retail agents in the community, and decided he wanted to bypass these intermediaries and create an organization that would benefit the artisans.

At the same time, he began to observe the business practices of retail agents in the community, and decided he wanted to bypass these intermediaries and create an organization that would benefit the artisans. Bhupathi then established Shilpa Trust in 1992.Shilpa Trust provides artisans with children’s educational assistance, free health check-ups, social security insurance, a loan program, skill training and product development. The artisans are based within small workshops, many of which are family owned and quite small. These workshops produce a variety of wooden products, including toys, games and ornaments. The Trust has a workshop located in Channapatna Craft Park in Channapatna town. “Artisans should learn to change their mindset. Instead of blaming their circumstances, they should adapt themselves to the changing trends and requirements of the market,” says Bhupathi.

Modernization In Design And Techniques

Modernization has take place in the field of channapatna toys. As we know the craft was started with basic hand lathe with no variations with minimum design choices and artisans were able to work more for more money. Cant complete very much bulk order with less time. Only cylindrical shapes are used for making toys. China was the biggest competitions leading the local market. Due to its cheap price.

Channaptna artisans started to explore with different colours like acrylic and poster colours. They started making different colours by mixing organic dyes to increase the variety of their colours. They started using power lathe which increased their production. They started making toys with different designs and also started making decorative products, kitchen item, home decor etc. They started exporting in different countries and due their innovative designs and attractive natural colours the craft started growing in the market. So in this way modernization came into this craft.

Channaptan toys is a legacy which has been passed from generation to generation but as we see nowadays the number of artisans is decreasing. They are not aware of hoe to upgrade their skill and also the industry is not future proof. As the needs of the market constantly changing so there is lots of pressure to meet these needs. As we known that artisans are not provided any government schemes so the gov should provide them schemes and facilities and awareness programme should be conducted for the which can connect them to a larger audience and upgrade their skills and tell them the shift of market and user needs. Proper care should be taken that each schemes and subsides should be reach to the artisans. Even in the pandemic they were not benefited by the government. So we should provide them facility and financial support even take care of their family. Health insurance, home loan etc should be provided with low cost so that their life can ruin smoothly. So we should provide them what they deserve and aware them about current market and trend and special fairs or tie up with different brands can be done so the craft can stay as it is accept of diminishing.

It was a great experience over there and i got to learn from the channapatna artisans and interact with them. I got the insights on the process of craft making, colouring process and other activities include in making this craft. These toys are very popular and in todays time because parents are very conscious for their children and can buy this toys and also the health of child will not affect. To save this craft they are doing lots of hard work and try to bring something new in the market daily as per the need of customers. I thank Mr Yuvraj Bhupathy and his whole team who have co-operate while conducting research and showed me every process of the craft so nicely. I also appreciate the hard work of the artisans who are working a lot and spent their whole life in doing this craft and bringing us these beautiful and safe toys. As a Indian i am feeling proud that our country is very wealthy and blessed with these beautiful crafts not only these all over India. And now its time to save them before it get lost from our hands.
