Dear Reader,

I

traveled often during my childhood, thus I never had the opportunity to own a pet. Although I am grateful for the opportunities I had, I realize how much I missed out on the warmth and affection of a furry friend as I’ve gotten older. I love animals, and I’m disappointed in the lack of effort people seem to put into them since they share this planet with us and are much a part of the world as we are.

I didn’t grow up owning a pet, so I did not realize the benefits of owning one. This is why my goal is to provide the best information needed when it comes to adopting the perfect pet for you. I will also include some information on shelters in different areas and how often they receive or find strays. I believe there are many animals in need of care, and sometimes adopting is a better option than paying for a full-breed animal. While there are pros and cons to both options, this article will show you what has worked for others. My hope is that it will help you figure out what works best for you and your potential new roommate.

Cat Cafe A

nne visited a cat shelter on her way home from work.

She had been dreaming for some time about adopting a cat, and since her schedule was free the rest of the day, she decided to begin looking for one. She had carefully done research on a shelter that had an excellent reputation for caring for the cats that enter and leave it.

When Anne arrived, she was greeted warmly, and immediately began to look around for a furry friend that she thought would best suit her lifestyle. She was impressed by how well cared

for all the cats seemed to be and this led to some questions for the owner as she cuddled and held the first cat – an orange kitten with a small chip in it’s ear.

She asked about how the shelter got started and their goals for the cats. They told her that the shelter was only a small effort at first between a few people and then eventually grew into a bigger operation. The couple who started it felt as though more could be done in the community. Considering that there are only three thousand, five-hundred animal shelters in

Something that has always shocked me personally, has always been the astounding numbers of animals either endangered or going into shelters every year. I have recently learned that approximately 6.3 million furry friends enter animal shelters in the U.S. every year. About 3.1 million are dogs and 3.2 are cats. Thankfully, it is estimated that the number of animals entering shelters has declined from 7.2 million annually since 2011.

However, of these animals, approximately 920,000 of them are euthanized each year. These numbers have thankfully been increasing due to more adoptions and more strays being returned to their owners each year.

The cats made Anne feel calm and happy.

America, and that is not close to enough for the estimated 6,300,000 animals who enter shelters annually – 3,200,000 are cats.

The cats made Anne feel calm and happy. She hoped that if she adopted one, it would sooth her stress and provide companionship. She mentioned this to the staff, and they agreed with her theory. Owning a pet would increase her physical and mental health as well as reduce anxiety, stress, and depression.

Anne chose the orange, little tiger, and when she took her new furry friend back home with her, she knew that this was the beginning of her journey in leading a more content and happier life.

I love animals and college didn’t work out.

Leopard gecko, snakes, hamsters, mice, fish, cats, dogs, tarantulas, scorpion.

Definitely snakes. People think they are scary slimy monsters.

When in reality they are super adorable! I love them.

Q: Which animals (or breeds of animals) have you had the best experience with owning or grooming and why?

Reptiles are super easy to own.

They don’t do much and don’t eat a lot so you save money too.

Q: What do you recommend as a pet for people with allergies?

I love leopard geckos they’d be a good choice.

Q: What about people with smaller homes or smaller/no yard?

Cats are a good option.

Dogs, I feel, need more human attention and care. Small rodents and reptiles don’t need that much care.

r. Chip Kyle pushed open the door and stepped outside. His nostrils felt clear and open as he took a deep breath, taking in the cool air. It was always a noticeable contrast to his workspace inside.

It was a hard day at work, and he needed a break to clear his head.

Fortunately for the doctor, being outside was the ideal place to go,

Chip is a radiologist; a physician that analyzes and reads images. Most days he sits in a dark room in front of a large computer screen and reads MRI scans, CT scans and X-rays all day. These were piling up faster than he could examine them.

That day, Chip stood there for a moment to absorb his surroundings. He always waited for his headaches to clear up before he did his usual notification-check on his phone during his breaks.

Once he was done, he put his earphones in and decided it was time for a short walk. Before he could start the next episode of the podcast he’s been listening to lately, he noticed movement in his peripheral vision that caught his attention.

He looked up.

What’s a dog doing out here?

He thought.

It was an orange dog running toward him at full speed. Chip took a startled step back, bracing himself for whatever the dog might do, but it stopped and then suddenly ran back from where it came. It repeated this process as Chip stood there and slightly chuckled in confusion.

Once he realized that the dog only wanted to play, he relaxed.

He thought.

He looked the creature over and noticed how dirty and malnourished it was. He felt sad for the dog and couldn’t bring himself to leave it there. Chip reached out his hand, calling for the dog in a calm manner.

“Hey, Buddy. What ya doin’?”

The dog titled its head, as if agreeing to the name given to him, but remained standoffish.

The doctor eased toward the dog, not wanting it to run away.

Eventually Chip was able to get close enough to pet the dog on its head. It looked up at Chip from its resting position and nuzzled its nose against his hand.

“You like that, Buddy? It’ll be alright. I’m here to help.”

People may think fish are useless and boring, but my Freddie gives me joy every day.

Having a pet (even as small as a fish) has always made me a little happier in life. Did you know that pets can actually improve your mental and physical health? They can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Here are a few examples of the benefits pets provide: People with pets are less likely to suffer from depression. They also tend to have lower blood pressure in stressful situations than people who don’t have pets. There was even a study that showed that when people with borderline hypertension adopted dogs, their blood pressure dropped drastically within the first 5 months.

Playing with a pet also elevates levels of dopamine and serotonin which can help calm and relax you. Pet owners also tend to have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels than those without pets Lastly, owners over the age of 65 make 30% fewer visits to the doctor than those without pets.

Chip stood up. The dog quickly got on its hind legs, placing its paws on the doctor. That’s when he realized that it had a dirty, unmarked collar on its neck. Chip grabbed the dog by its collar, but it somehow found the energy to pull Chip around.

The doctor realized that he would need his belt to make the dog more manageable, so he slipped his belt through the metal ring on the collar.

The dog was more content and docile, though still playful, as they walked together.

Chip smiled.

“Buddy it is then, huh?”

When they reached the building, Chip walked through the door and held it open for Buddy.

“Hey, guys, I’m back!” Chip said. “Look who I found outside.”

First only a couple people looked, but when they made excited exclamations, even more people hurried up to see what all the fuss was about. The next few minutes consisted of questions while Buddy kept himself seated next to Chip. A couple of coworkers even decided to make a care package for Buddy.

They provided some food, toys, and water for him.

his work. Though the load had increased to the point of it keeping the doctor there until the morning, the task didn’t feel so daunting with Buddy there to keep the stress at bay.

Chip decided to take a short nap to energize himself. He went into his office and laid down a blanket for Buddy while he leaned back in his cozy office chair.

Chip woke up several minutes later and checked the time, hoping he didn’t oversleep. He looked over at Buddy, still fast asleep. He felt comforted and somehow knew with certainty that this dog would be his new best friend.

When Chip managed to eventually finish his work, he got Buddy into his car and began to take him home with him.

On the drive there, Chip felt some nervousness due to him being uncertain as to how his wife Yvonne would react to Buddy since they hadn’t had a dog in several years.

“I have a little surprise for you.”

He parked the car into his driveway when he arrived home.

He sat in silence for a few minutes thinking about what he would say and how he would say it.

He sighed. “Here goes nothing.”

Chip stepped out of the car, opened the tailgate for Buddy and walked him into the house.

“Yvonne,” Chip said, “I have a little surprise for you.”

Yvonne was in the kitchen doing her usual experimental cooking when Chip walked in with Buddy.

“What is it?” She said, looking over at Chip. Then she saw the big yellow fur ball. She let out a deep sigh and looked back up at Chip.

Did you know that there are 3,500 animal shelters in the U.S.? That’s not a lot for the 6.3 million animals who enter those shelters every year.

Did you also know that only 1 out of 10 dogs born will find a permanent home? Animals typically enter shelters because they are either found on the streets, or their owners literally give them up. On top of that, about 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed every year because shelters are not able to find them homes. Less than 2% of cats and only 15-20% of dogs are returned to their owners. There are so many stray animals in the U.S. alone that is impossible to know the exact number of them. However, we do have an estimate that there are about 70 million stray cats.

“Well, I found him at work, and I couldn’t just leave him there.

Won’t you give him a chance?”

Chip said, looking down at Buddy as he petted him.

Yvonne was conflicted. They hadn’t had a pet in a while, and she had grown accustomed to being alone with Chip. She typically did not enjoy animals. She wanted to say no. In fact, that’s all she could think, but something about Buddy made her say yes.

Yvonne had never liked animals and this was a struggle for her.

She was still uncertain despite her agreement, but she couldn’t deny the obvious happiness this dog was bringing her husband.

He had just gone through a really rough time in his life and she wanted to help in whatever way she could. Even if this meant sacrificing this for him.

She even would send pictures and videos of Buddy to their grown kids who lived far away.

able. The breed was beautiful, extremely smart, and would be a medium size. Ben and Anne drove three hours together to pick out their new puppy. Although it would be a present for Ben, she decided both of them could be involved in picking out a name. During the trip, they went through several names and finally decided on Charlie.

When they saw Charlie, both Ben and Anne immediately fell in love with her – and Charlie was happy to meet Ben. The two played for a little and then they decided to make the trip back home.

Ben and Charlie became inseparable. Every time Ben went somewhere, she whined and looked for him. Charlie would get very excited when she saw Ben again. If Charlie wasn’t playing, then she loved to cuddle. She was always perfect for helping his owners wind down after a stressful day.

As Charlie grew older, she became part of the family. Whenever they were out together people would complement Charlie on her beauty and behavior. She not only gave Ben and Anne joy in life, but Charlie loved making everyone she met happy as well.
