A
h! all those missed opportunities. This one could have been a laugh riot, but for a script that suddenly loses its nuts and bolts and winds up into irrational territory. The Sassy Girlfriend (Mallika Sherawat) suddenly grows senty, dives into the Mandovi river and leaves her petticoat boyfriend (Ranvir Shorey) hanging love-lorn notes o n a tree. And when she re-emerges, she’s ready to marry someone else who suddenly reminds her of her old flame and sends her scurrying back to him. Of course, she doesn’t find him at the old address, but hey, what happened to the breezy first half and the outrageous bakwas between the odd couple: the hegirl and the she-boy? The film begins on a promising note, despite being a re-take of a Korean film. Loser Ranvir meets a slobbered Mallika Sherawat trying to jump before a local train and ends up carrying her to a hotel and spending the night with her, until she sobers up. Of course, the loser ends up sleeping on the floor and falling deeply in love with a girl who slaps him hard and proper whenever she’s not sloshed or demanding something bizarre. Like, walking in highheels, riding a seat-less bike in a red petticoat, stealing red roses from a park or dancing with her while she’s ekdum talli. Sometimes, he does get his moments too and dares her to play the superwoman she poses to be. But our Ms Sprightly is ready for any and every challenge, even if it means strutting in college (yes, Mallika is a college kid!) with her chhaddis over her jeans. So these are the fun parts, where Ranvir actually wonders why he loves this girl who is an alcoholic, a snorer and a goondi. And Mallika maintains the mystery of why she hangs out with this guy who has failed four times in college and has neither looks nor spirit. But when the mystery is unspooled, the magic wanes and the laughs dry down. Then, it’s the performances that keep the film afloat, specially Ranvir Shorey who excels in portraying the perfect underdog. Mallika too displays a newfound restraint and creates a lively new image for the archetypal heroine. Wish the laughs hadn’t petered away ...Wish that Zeenat Aman hadn’t been wasted in a fleeting cameo!
Big producers show interest in Bollywood hottie after Sylvester Stallone goes ‘Wow!’

his, it looks like, will be the big year of Kareena Kapoor. In her new avatar with size zero adding considerable oomph value to her drop-dead gorgeous looks, the actress is making heads turn internationally. Last week at Universal Studio in LA, where she is shooting with Akshay Kumar for Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakkht Ishq, Kareena caught Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone’s attention. The Rocky and Rambo actor, who has a bit part in the film, was taken in by her beauty and apparently has not stopped talking about the Indian actress. Hollywood agents, quick to follow Stallone’s cue, began dropping in on Nadiadwala’s sets to check out Kareena and have been making inquires about her. Sources say the Bollywood hottie has had a few hush-hush meetings with some top Hollywood executives and is likely to be making a big career announcement soon. When JT asked Kareena about this, she replied non-commitally, “It’s the right time for Bollywood with so many avenues and doors opening up on a global scale. The possibilities are immense. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed.” But it’s not only through Kambakkth Ishq that the actress has gone global. She recently did the cover of an international magazine for which she was styled by Nicole Kidman’s stylist Desiree and shot by famous fashion photographer Trevor Leighton.
Besides, international R&B and pop icon Sean Kingston has also mentioned her as Bollywood’s numero uno in the remake of his chartbuster Beautiful Girls, now named Bollywood Girls.

atrina K a i f seems to have had enough of beau Salman Khan’s erratic behaviour. After rumours of an impending split, which had been doing the rounds for a long time, Kat has finally put her foot down and looks ready to cut off personal as well as professional ties with Sallu. Not only has Kat stopped talking to Sallu. She has decided not to work with Salman anymore. If sources are to be believed, Subhash Ghai’s upcoming film Yuvraaj will be her last film with Salman. She recently shot with Salman for Yuvraaj but without exchanging a single word with him on the sets. An eyewitness from the sets says that she has even been going
around telling people that she will not work with Salman anymore. A source from the sets says, “Usually, Katrina and Salman were quite friendly on the sets. This is the first time that you can see the friction between them.” “After every shot, Katrina and Salman stormed off into their respective vanity vans and did not interact with each other at all,” adds an eyewitness from the film’s sets. So what led to the final rift? Our source says, “After Katrina’s recent birthday bash ended on an ugly note with Salman and SRK nearly coming to blows, Kat asked Sallu to apologise to SRK since he was the host of the party and it was rude of him to have behaved in an unruly manner. She also told Salman that whosoever’s fault it was, he should have tackled the situation calmly.” When we contacted Katrina, she heard us out and then said, “Can I call you back?” which she never did.

Bored would be a better word, as the explorer tries to while away his time in Mummy 3, shooting fish, while wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) wistfully dreams of writing her third book on the Mummy adventures. Even their twenty-something son (Luke Ford) seemed to have abandoned their dour company, preferring to join his uncle in distant Shanghai, excavating treasures on his own. The family gets a chance to regroup and get their adrenalin pumping all over again when a long-dead evil Emperor (Jet Li) rises from his sleep and unleashes his million mummies’ army into the Chinese wastelands. The Emperor dreams of immortality and heads for the magic waters of Shangrila, before he can begin his reign of terror. But the O’Connors are coming, as is the 2000-year-old mother-daughter duo who have the magic dagger that can put an end to his ungodly ambition. The special effects are actually not state-of-the-art, unlike the earlier versions nor is the chemistry crackling between Richard and Evelyn, as they go for the kill. But the saddest plight befalls action hero Jet Li who spends most of the screen time swathed in layers of peeling make-up and is hardly allowed to display his martial arts skills. But all you Mummy fans need not despair because there’s a sequel in store, for the film ends with a teaser pointing to future action in Peru.

ollywood too has its canned films. Like some of Bollywood’s moth-balled movies, actor Alec Baldwin’s directorial venture had been lying half-baked for quite some time before finding a theatrical release in the US. The effect shows, for this Faustian bargain — Baldwin sells his soul to devil, Jennifer Love Hewitt, lacks the sting of a delightfully devilish tale. Baldwin plays a struggling writer who sells his soul to the devil in a trenchcoat and ends up with the spoils of success — money, fame, women ...But soul satisfaction is what he lacks. He goes hunting for orator Daniel Webster (Anthony Hopkins) who promises to win back his soul in a supra-natural trial against the She-Devil. Watch it if you must, but only for Anthony Hopkins.

laude Lelouch is one of the most compelling contemporary French filmmakers who has wowed the festival circuit with his unconventional cinema. Crossed Tracks (Roman De Gare) is a teasing thriller about a mysterious man (Dominique Pinon) who drives onto the screen on a dark night, while the radio is blaring a red alert for an escapist convict who happens to be a serial paedophile rapist who lures his victims with magic tricks. The next shot has our anonymous highway man playing some magic tricks for a young girl and later, offering a ride to a young woman who has been dumped on a gas station by her boyfriend. So who’s the night-rider? Is he the escaped convict, the ghost-writer who’s story was stolen by a famous author, as he claims, or a husband who has fled from his wife and family? The plot twists and turns through dangerous territory and keeps you riveted with its tangy love story between the mystery man and the jilted woman who introduces him as her fiance to her outback family. Go for it. There’s life bustling beyond Hollywood.
