Pershing Square Site Design
In this project, the use of abstract shapes along with geometric shapes of squares and lines with different materials such as concrete, metal, and glass allows for the intermixing of creativity and imagination and organization and symmetry. It also builds on ideas of a contrast between traditional versus modern architecture. In the traditional sense, green spaces along with symmetrical lines and shapes for the buildings, including the amphitheater, are incorporated for a holistic approach to unity. In the modern sense, curves and asymmetry provide a new approach to windows. Themes such as nature vs material, connectedness, and openness are seen throughout.
In addition to the mesmerizing contrast of beauty and strength, the use of ramps and an elevator provide access to all areas of the site. Ramps are located on each edge of the site as well as inside the public sphere leading to the amphitheater. The elevator allows ascension to the second floor where an open-air, roof-top cafe welcomes the viewers for an extended view of connectivity, openness, and contrasts of nature versus material. Level changes are apparent in the steps leading to the public building, in the parks, and in seating areas. They provide dimensional depth and allow for openness as viewers standing on higher-leveled areas are able to see an extended range of the site.
With the use of abstract and geometrical shapes, contrasts of natural versus material, and traditional and modern designs, openness, and connectedness can be observed throughout the project as it aims to provide unity between two opposing worlds.
