Aslam sued for sedition n Arifur Rahman Rabbi BNP Joint Secretary General Aslam Chowdhury was sued for sedition yesterday evening, hours after the police chief claimed that he had confessed plotting to unseat the incumbent government. “Aslam has confessed that he met Mossad agent Mendi N Safadi, a leader of Israeli’s ruling Likud

Party, several times to hatch conspiracy against the government,” Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque told reporters after attending a programme at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka in the afternoon. Safadi is also the chief of International Diplomacy and Public Relations which has a good relation with Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. “During interrogation, Aslam told us that he met Safadi and sought their help to conduct subversive activities in Bangladesh with a view to ousting the ruling Awami League government.

Aslam also wanted to give him money for this purpose. “Details about the monetary issue can only be known once we arrest Aslam’s associates,” he said, adding that the police had already got the government’s permission to file a sedition case against the BNP leader. DB (north) Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that the sedition case had been filed against Aslam with Gulshan police in the evening. DB Inspector Golam Rabbani filed the case. Aslam was arrested on May 15 and remanded. He was later shown arrested in two other cases. Convener of the Chittagong divisional (north) unit of the BNP, Aslam is known as a follower of the party’s Senior Vice-President Tarique Rahman. Police say Aslam is an accused in at least three dozens of cases filed for sabotage activities in 2013 and 2014. The discussion over BNP’s alleged attempt to engage Mossad against the government surfaced after local media published photos and news of Aslam meeting Safadi in Delhi in March. Monirul Islam, chief of counter-terrorism and transnational crime (CTTC) unit, earlier said that the Delhi meeting and international militant outfit Islamic State claiming responsibility after killings in Bangladesh were interconnected. The BNP has refuted the allegation of conspiracy against the government saying that the meeting was private. Party’s Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir earlier said that the BNP does not have any relation with Israel. He said: “The BNP is a democratic and liberal political party. We believe that a government can be changed only through elections.” l

Muhith makes his case Ahead of his 10th budget, Finance Minister AMA Muhith acknowledged some of his failures, including revenue shortfalls and district budgets. But the octogenarian policymaker of five decades dodged questions about major mishaps that rocked the banking sector under his watch, during an hour long interview with DhakaTribune’s Asif Shawkat Kallol What is your philosophy for the upcoming budget? The government cannot provide more service to citizens without a big budget. We started with a budget outlay of Tk94,000 crore and the next budget is Tk340,000 crore. At the start of our second tenure, I spoke to my friends [his colleagues at the ministry] and our secretaries about where I want to see the Bangladesh economy in 2018-2019 fiscal year when we officially achieve middle income status. The next budget is in line with that goal. At the end of our second tenure, the budget should reach Tk500,000 crore. Although, according to the latest data, there was an 8% revenue shortfall in the outgoing budget, I believe we have a solid ground in the current fiscal year because of good economic performance. I am confident that our economic targets including GDP growth will be achieved. We know there are deficiencies in budget implementation. We are putting hard work into

CID: BB heist a foreign job Rahman Rabbi n Arifur and Kamrul Hasan The Criminal Investigation Department has officially declared that they did not find the evidence of any Bangladeshi national directly involved in the digital heist of $81 million from Bangladesh Bank. “We have not yet found evidence of anyone from Bangladesh Bank or of Bangladeshi origin involved in the heist. The central bank alone cannot be blamed for this. But it could have been avoided if they

were less negligent,” CID Special Superintendent (organised crime) Mirza Abdullahel Baqui said yesterday. The investigating agency earlier identified 20 foreigners for their alleged involvement in the muchtalked hacking incident. In April, the probe body on the reserve heist in its interim report found gross negligence and lack of knowledge at the central bank. The committee recommended that the government undertake massive reform at the central bank, suggesting

massive restructuring in terms of administrative, institutional and technological upgrades. CID officials said that they would also interview several officials of SWIFT authorities over the heist. “They agreed to give the interview but sought some time for preparation,” CID Additional Deputy Inspector General Shah Alam told the Dhaka Tribune. In the meantime, a team of the central bank and CID officials would visit the Philippines to attend a
