Singapore-based militant squad uncovered 8 held in Singapore for questioning, 5 sent back and in Bangladeshi custody n Mohammad Jamil Khan Singapore’s Internal Security Department has detained 13 expatriate Bangladeshi workers for their alleged involvement with militant activities and plotting terror attacks, the second such detention in six months. Of the arrestees, the Singaporean authorities have sent back five Bangladeshis but kept the others in custody for interrogation under the Singapore Internal Security Act (ISA), Monirul Islam, chief of Counter-terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of police, confirmed yesterday. Monirul said the five suspected militants were picked up from different parts of the city yesterday. A case was also filed against them with Rampura police. The five are Mizanur Rahman Galib alias Galib Hasan, 38, of Brahmanbaria; Rana Miah Pilot, 29, of Bogra; Alamgir Hossain, 31, of Meherpur; Tanzimul Islam, 24, of Chandpur; and Masud Rana, 31 of Pabna. They are all supporters of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team that has claimed the murder of several teachers and secular activists since 2013, police sources said. Eight of the detainees who are kept in Singapore for interrogation eight others were arrested in April this year. They formed a group named Islamic State in Bangladesh (ISB) and were collecting members since January. Sowdagar, 30; and Sohel Hawlader Ismail Hawlader, 29. The statement says that Mizanur was an S-Pass holder while the seven others were Work Permit holders. They were all employed in the local construction and marine sectors. The authorities claim that these workers belonged to ISB set up by Mizanur in March this year. The
detainees informed the police that there were at least two other members of ISB in Bangladesh. They reportedly intended to join international terrorist group Islamic State as foreign fighters. However, finding it difficult to travel to Syria, they focused their plans instead on returning to Bangladesh and establish Shariah.
