Ten people being killed each day in Bangladesh n Mohammad Jamil Khan The number of murders, especially targeted killings, has reached an alarming height in the first few months of 2016. From the start of the year and up to April 25, a total 1,215 people have been killed across Bangladesh, according to the Police Headquarters database. That equals to an average of over 10 murders each day in the country. Although 11 people were killed on an average every day in 2015, with a total 4,015 murders throughout the year, political vio-

lence accounted for many of those fatalities. So far this year, only 32 deaths were results of political violence surrounding union parishad polls. Despite the high murder rate, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said he was happy with the present law and order situation. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday told the parliament that law enforcement agencies have been successful in unearthing the mysteries behind the recent killings in Bangladesh. Replying to a query from ruling party MP Kazi Nabil Ahmed, the premier said the people who have connections to previous militant, criminal or sabotage activities are now under intelligence surveillance. Hasina also said legal action has been taken against the suspects and the sources of militancy and militant financing to curb terrorism and other criminal activities. The prime minister also said the government has already given directives to law enforcers on taking stern legal actions against all sorts of militancy, sabotage and violent activities. The premier added that foreign investment has been increasing gradually and Bangladesh's economic base was getting stronger as normal law and order situation has been prevailing. Replying to another query from independent lawmaker Haji Selim, Hasina said: “Bangladesh Bank heist will not put any long term impact on the country’s economy.” The premier also said a portion of the stolen money was recovered and the rest would be recovered through legal procedure. l

Minister: Killers all from same group n

The home minister has said that the law enforcement agencies have found evidence that local militants were behind the 31 recent murders that took place across the country. Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said yesterday that 25 of these cases had already been solved and the perpetrators arrested. “Islami Chattra Shibir, Ansarullah Bangla Team, Jama’atul Mujaheedin Bangladesh, Ansar Al Islam and al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) are all the same people, just using different names from time to time,” the minister said. “These militants have been carrying out targeted killings to destabilise the country.” The minister was speaking to journalists after a meeting with US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat at the  PAGE 2 COLUMN 5

Amaq created a month before Prof Rezaul killing n Abdullah Al Dulal, Rajshahi The website of Amaq news agency, where militant group Dae’sh or Islamic State claimed responsibility for the killing of Rajshahi University teacher Dr AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee hours after the crime, was built in the free domain of Wordpress just a month before. Police are now scrutinising the website, which is operated from the US. America’s SITE Intelligence Group quoted the news agency to publish the statement that the IS was behind the killing of Rezaul, an English professor.
