The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists in Bangladesh fear for their lives and have begun to go into hiding following the murder of Xulhaz Mannan, editor of Bangladesh’s first LGBT magazine. Several members of the community refused to speak to the Dhaka Tribune when contacted saying they were too shocked to react. Some said they would soon move from their present locations as they the feel same thing might happen to them. But many activists reaffirmed their commitment to their cause, saying they would continue their activism even if under a different name and from a different location. Sharif Hasan Bappy, who identified himself as a friend of Xulhaz, said: “They will destroy or kill everyone who is an LGBT activist. Roopbaan’s activities may face instability for a while but it will not stop.” Bappy said publication of Roopbaan’s third edition might be delayed after the incident. l
