RU teacher Rezaul Karim killed Jamil Khan in n Mohammad Dhaka and Dulal Abdullah from Rajshahi Suspected Islamic extremists yesterday morning hacked to death Rajshahi University’s English department teacher Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique, the fourth teacher of the institution to be killed in a decade. Well-known for his enthusiasm for music and literary works, Prof Rezaul was hacked with machetes by two assailants on motorcycle in an alley near his house in Shalbagan area of the town around 7:30am. He was attacked while walking to the main road to catch a bus for the university at that time when presence of people was very thin in the alley. Following the murder, officials of several law enforcement agencies visited the spot and observing the crime scene suggested that it could be an act of the militants who recently killed a number of secular writers and activists, and preachers belonging to Shia, Ahmadiyya, Hindu and Christian communities. Later in the day, international

jihadi monitor website SITE Intelligence Group quoting Dae’sh’s Amaq news agency. The government, however, re-

After the murder, Progressive Students’ Alliance, an umbrella platform of several student organisations, and the students of English Department, brought out a protest procession on the campus. RU Teachers’ Association also announced a number of programmes protesting the murder including a boycott of classes as a token protest today. The agitating students also blocked Rajshahi-Dhaka Highway for around 30 minutes from 10:30am demanding quick arrest of the killers. Proctor Mujibul Haque Azad Khan termed the murder utterly shocking, and said that it was another of the heinous murders. Besides teaching, Prof Rezaul was the editor of literary magazine “Komolgandhar” and adviser to a cultural organisation named “Shundorom.” He was working to set up a music school in Shalbagan area. Friends, colleagues and locals said that Prof Rezaul was a pious Muslim. He used to donate money to mosques and madrasas too.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

A professor of the English department at Rajshahi University, Rezaul Karim Siddique was a kind man, who loved to play numerous musical instruments. Prof Rezaul was an expert in playing the sitar. He also established a music school at his residence in Dorgamaria of Baghmara area of Rajshahi. He used to manage the school activities himself, and was never involved with any kind of political activity, according to his family and friends. After a visit to his residence yesterday, we found the late professor’s sitar lying on his bed, with its box on the floor. It seems he even played just moments before heading out in the morning.

His bed was well-made; the bedsheet kept under the pillow properly. The telephone set kept beside the bed was covered by a clean cloth, while his other musical instruments - the ektara, the harmonium and the tabla - were kept under the bed. There were two bookshelves in the room, and a framed picture of a bird hung on the wall. Hosne Ara, wife of Rezaul, said in a pained voice: “I am completely confused about the incident and what happened as he neither had any political connection nor any conflict with anyone.” Rezaul’s brother-in-law, Mostafizur Rahman, said that Rezaul was the quiet type of person, who used to be busy with academics while at the university, and with musical instruments while at home. He did not even write any

blog, Mostafizur added. About the music school, Mostafizur said that he often used to visit his native village had engaged in playing games and practicing music with children. Beside cultural activities, Prof Rezaul also attended different religious programmes that were held in his village. His cousin Jebunnesa, also a member of Awami League of Rajshahi district, said Prof Rezaul had also donated to many mosques and madrashahs. Rezaul was also involved with a cultural organisation named “Komolgandhar.” He used to contribute to the editorial in a small newspaper of the same name from the organisation. Abdullah Al Mamun, associate professor of the English department, said: “Sir was a very good  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3

People who knew slain Rajshahi University teacher Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique cannot believe that someone can kill such a calm and acquiescent person. Condemnation and mourning came across from his colleagues, students, well wishers and those who even did not have intimacy with him but knew his name as a learned academician and music enthusiast. Take Abdullah Al-Mamun, once a student of Prof Rezaul and now an associate professor of the same English department, who thinks that the killing did not take place for personal enmity. “We never though this can happen.
