Turnout in UP polls 73.82% n Adil Sakhawat

The Election Commission has announced the results for 502 of the 712 Union Parishads in the first phase of the UP election held on March 22. Within the results obtained so far, 73.82% of the voters cast their vote for the chairman posts, EC Seceretary Sirajul Islam told reporters at the EC secretariat yesterday. Up till yesterday afternoon the commission had finalised the results from 502 UPs, of which ruling Awami League candidates got 387 chairman posts, independent candidates won 68 and in BNP candidates won 26.

Jatiya Party candidates won 3, Workers Party 2 and JSD, Jatiya Party (JP) and Islamic Andolon Bangladesh won one chairman post each. “Among the announced UP results, Awami League got 33% of the votes and BNP got 10%,” Secretary Islam said. In the last municipality elections, voter turnout was 74% and Awami League candidates got 52% and BNP candidates 28% of the votes. Elections have been held in 712 unions in the first phase. Of these, 54 were won by Awami League candidates uncontested and the EC suspended voting in 65 centres due to disorder or irregularities.

EC's election management and coordination branch officials said that among the 81,29,009 voters, 60,00,826 voters cast their vote and 1,06,465 votes were cancelled. Awami League got about 34 lakh votes and BNP around 10 lakh. The 68 independent candidates got 14,44,781 votes in their favour, about 13.82% of the total. Zoha turns up safe, no clue on missing days n Arifur Rahman Rabbi A week after he went missing, IT specialist Tanvir Hassan Zoha turned up near Dhaka airport in the early hours of yesterday – alive and unharmed but in a disoriented state. However, there was still no information about where he had been during the past week or who had picked him up on March 16. Around 1:30am yesterday, law enforcers found a disoriented Zoha walking near the Airport Railway Station. After confirming his identi-

ty, plainclothes detectives dropped him off at his home around 2am, said Zoha's uncle Mahbubul Alam. “When he returned, Zoha was in a totally messy condition and his mental condition was not well. But there was no visible injury on his body. Now we are providing him the necessary treatment and medical support,” the uncle said.
