Hasina opens Paris Agreement ready at COP21 n main work of Padma Bridge Abu Bakar Siddique from Paris

The main construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge began yesterday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurating the works of the main bridge and river training. The premier opened the river training works at Jajira point in Shariatpur and inaugurated the works of the main bridge at Mawa in Munshiganj. While inaugurating river training, Sheikh Hasina said the allegations of corruption in the Padma Bridge project were part of a conspiracy. She said the World Bank had not been able to prove any of the allegations. While inaugurating the main construction work at Mawa point, Hasina said: “Overcoming all the controversies and financial and construction hurdles, the dream of Padma Multi-purpose Bridge is becoming a reality.

The premier said: ‘The bridge would particularly benefit the people of the southern part of the country’ “We hope that within three years, the construction work of the Padma Bridge will be completed,” she said. The project plan aims to complete the two-tier 6.15-km bridge by December 2018. The Premier said: “The bridge would particularly benefit the people of the southern part of the country by changing their lives, marking an epoch in the country’s communication system, expanding regional cooperation, promoting trade and business and making huge contribution to our efforts to reduce poverty.” Addressing a civic gathering at Naodoba on the banks of Padma River, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said: “I wanted to show that we can. Today we have arrived at that hour.” The PM expressed her gratitude to the families who sacrificed their ancestral lands, homes and businesses for the construction of the bridge with hopes that it, when completed, would bring massive socio-economic changes.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

After a hectic overnight debate and discussion, the conference of parties (COP)21 yesterday produced a legally binding agreement, though deemed weak by many, to tackle the negative impacts of climate change in future. According to the final version of the agreement, countries participating in the conference agreed to limit the

world’s temperature by well below 2 degrees Celsius by the end of the century from the pre-industrial period. And at the same time, the countries will try to check the temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius. As the text reads, emphasising with serious concern the urgent need to address the significant gap between the aggregate effect of Parties’ mitigation pledges in terms of global annual emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020 and aggregate emission pathways consistent with holding the increase in

the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. “We have come up with this ambition with the consensus of all parties here,” said contentious COP21 President Laurent Fabius yesterday noon at the plenary session, adding that the text of the agreement is a balanced and legally binding one.
