The country celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival in the country, with fervour and festivity despite an overcast weather and rain all over the country. People from all walks of life were seen braving the rain and appearing at their local Eidgahs – special grounds for Eid prayers – early in the morning donning new clothes to perform the special prayers. Irrespective of their social standings, they embraced each other in greetings. A committee has been formed to look into these matters. The fire that raged over the slum for nearly four hours reduced the 700 to 800 dwellings

The slum, known as Bhai Bhai Boarding, was built on a large pond opposite the Lion Eye Hospital. The simple dwellings had floors of wood and bamboo fences. The blaze also damaged several floors of some high-rise buildings adjacent to the slum.

According to weather forecast, thunderstorms are expected to play foul throughout the entire first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, starting today, but the hosts will be hardly bothered with the rain as they bid to exhibit some good cricket with the red ball. The Tigers defeated the Proteas in the recently concluded three-ODI series but a different challenge awaits the home side in the opening five-dayer. In the eight previous
