Teesta flow at historic low Al-Masum Molla n Mohammad back from Lalmonirhat With Bangladesh receiving the least water ever from Teesta this year, farmers along the basin in Lalmonirhat have never had a more unproductive yield. Most of them did not see their crops being watered through the boro season – January to March – which accounts for almost two-thirds of Bangladesh’s food production. Although their lands were ostensibly under the Teesta irrigation project, only about a tenth ended up being covered. The project has never failed them in such a manner. The main reason, officials say, is lack of water flow in the once mighty river. According to Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission (JRC), on a particular day this year, the flow in Teesta was 232 cubic feet per second (cusec), the lowest ever. “There was water scarcity in almost the whole boro season—January, February, March and mid-April and farmers have the most difficult time this year,” said JRC member Mir Sajjad Hossain. Modi’s maiden visit June 6 n Sheikh Shahariar Zaman Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Dhaka on a two-day state visit on June 6. Modi’s maiden visit follows paving of the way in the Indian parliament for the implementation of the much-talked-about Land Boundary Agreement. The visit of Modi is expected to focus on some major issues including the Teesta water sharing deal and river basin management. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart will have the official talks on June 6 and it is expected that a good number of instruments will be signed in the presence of the two prime ministers. During his visit Modi will pay a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid. Leader of the Opposition Rawshan Ershad will meet Modi during his stay in Bangladesh. Modi is also likely to have a meeting with BNP chief Khaleda Zia. The Indian prime minister will also deliv-

Agreements

The Renewal of Trade Agreement and the Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade have already got the nod of the cabinet and it is almost sure that those would be signed during the visit of the Indian premier. A coastal shipping agreement, which has been finalised by the two countries, will also be signed in the presence of the two prime ministers. Agreements and protocols on bus services between Dhaka-Shillong and Kolkata-Agartala through Bangladesh will also be inked during Modi’s visit. The test run of a bus service between Dhaka and Shillong was held on May 22 and it is  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4
