Al-Qaeda claims responsibility for secularists’ murders

n Mohammad Jamil Khan Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) claimed responsibility for the murder of a Bangladeshi-American secularist blogger, a number of other Bangladeshi liberal bloggers and a well-known secularist academic, according to SITE Intelligence Group. In a video circulated online, AQIS leader Asim Umar said al-Qaeda operatives murdered bloggers Avijit Roy, Oyasiqur Rahman Babu, Ahmed Rajeeb Haider and Rajshahi University teacher AKM Shafiul Islam. The AQIS leader said his organisation was responsible for the attack in a video posted on jihadist forums on Saturday, the same day Avijit’s wife Rafida Ahmed Bonna, who was severely injured in the attack, won German broadcaster Deutche Welle’s Best of the Blogs award.

On November 15 last year, unidentified assailants hacked Prof Shafiul to death with machetes in broad daylight near his Choddopai residence close to the Rajshahi University campus. Bangladeshi militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) also claimed responsibility for Roy’s murder via a twitter account which police have not been able to verify as genuine. Roy was well known for his Mukto-Mona (Free-mind) blog where he wrote against all forms of organised religion. Joint Commissioner of Detective Branch of Police Monirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that the murder were believed to be carried out by ABT. We have been saying this since the beginning of our investigation, he said.

Investigators have claimed to have identified two of the killers of secular blogger Avijit Roy, a Bangladeshi-American, but are still to trace their locations. One of the investigators, who is a high official of police, told the Dhaka Tribune on condition of anonymity that one of them is Redowanul Azad Rana and the other is one of his followers. He also said that the duo might have fled by crossing the border with a neighbouring country soon after the murder. On Saturday, a regional branch of global terrorist organisation Al Qaeda claimed responsibility of Avijit’s murder through a video message circulated on the Internet. When asked about this, the investigator said they are not so sure about the claim. “We have been saying from the beginning that a local extremist group named Ansarullah Bangla Team [ABT] is behind the murder. There can be links between ABT and Al Qaeda. But we cannot say for certain that Al Qaeda is directly involved with the murder,” he said. Two months have already elapsed but the only notable progress in the case is the arrest of Shafiur Rahman Farabi, who has threatened Avijit on social media. Although, Detective Branch of police has been investigating the case, the arrest was made by RAB. A team of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has visited Bangladesh to assist the local investigators in solving the murder case. The US investigators have collected DNA samples and other evidences but there has been no breakthrough from that end either.

for the post by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. When asked why she had chosen him, he is charmingly matter-of-fact: “Only she can answer that, I think. “I’m here from a sense of responsibility.” He dismisses claims that he sat on his laurels as the premier’s pick, saying he campaigned as hard as the next man. “I wanted the people to feel I was committed. We ran a good and effective campaign.” His wife and chief election agent, Rubana Huq agrees: “We campaigned like crazy. Our effort was genuine and intense.” His voice hoarse from campaigning, An-

nis takes a puff from the inhaler his doctor has prescribed to help him recover from the strain. “I expected to win. I was confident – I worked hard. I gave my best to this effort.” Then he becomes thoughtful again and says: “I did not expect it to get so political.” The Huqs are not exactly new to public life. Annis has served two terms as president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and as president of both the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Avijit Roy was hacked to death by two assailants with machetes on the streets of the capital Dhaka in February as he returned from a book fair with his wife. “Al-Qaeda operatives in the Indian sub-continent have recently assassinated several blasphemers. “The killing mission started in Pakistan wit0h the murder of the secular Dr Shakeel Auj and blogger Aneeqa Naz. “And extended to Bangladesh where Rajib Haider had earlier been assassinated. “Meanwhile, the accused atheist professor of Rajshahi University and the American citizen Avijit Roy have also been killed using a butcher’s knife,” the video said. Haider and Rahman were also killed by machete-wielding attackers. Haider died in 2013 and Rahman was hacked to death in March.

‘This is my dream job’ n Asif Islam Annisul Huq seems, at first, a little taciturn as we sit down to talk on Saturday. He smiles and talks about the city poll elections in Dhaka. “I would have been happier if the BNP had stayed in the race – then there would be no questions.” I later realise he is reluctant to comment on the work ahead before he has the chance to meet his staff and survey the problems at hand. “If I say anything before I have a chance to really understand what the issues are, then I’d just be making pretty speeches.”

Speechifying for the sake of it is simply not Annis’ style. The mayor-elect seems genuinely committed to his campaign manifesto, a set of objectives distilled from the results of a survey his camp conducted. The central focus of the six-point manifesto is the cleaning and greening of the capital. “But not just the capital ... the whole country.” “We want a clean Dhaka, in every sense of the word. This is my dream job,” the mayor-elect says. The ruling party’s favourite for the Dhaka north mayorship, Annis was asked to stand
