Tigers top the world Tamim and Imrul rewrite record books with historic 312-run partnership n Minhaz Uddin Khan from Khulna Hopes were minute. The Tigers were staring at yet another innings defeat. Sensing the negative vibe, the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium crowd started growing thin with each passing day of the first Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan. The hosts, in the meantime, were left frustrated, stranded and helpless heading into their second innings on the fourth and penultimate day’s play last Friday. The visitors had posted a gigantic 628-allout in their first innings to take a huge 296-run lead. The home side needed to survive most of the remaining five sessions to draw the Test, a commendable result given Bangladesh’s track-record against Pakistan. In eight previous Tests against their subcontinent rival, the Tigers had lost all of them. Openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes began the recovery act. Considered one of Bangladesh’s most successful pairs in Test cricket, the opening-wicket stand bravely saw off three sessions and created a host of records on their way to a majestic 312-run association. Riding on the openers’ exploits, the Tigers drew the five-dayer after being under the cosh for the majority of the Test match. The cricketing fraternity watched in amazement as Tamim and Imrul made a mockery of the Pakistan bowlers. The likes of Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan and Zulfiqar Babar were made to look pedestrian as the Bangladesh openers broke a record that had stood for 55 years.
In 1960, England duo Colin Cowdrey and Geoff Pullar had put on 290 runs for the opening wicket against South Africa in the second innings. Yesterday, Tamim and Imrul went past the record and registered the highest ever opening partnership in the second innings. Another English opening pair were also left to curse their luck. In 2004, Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss added 273 runs against South Africa to become the most successful left-handed opening pair in Tests. Tamim-Imrul’s 312-run stand broke that record too. Ever since his international debut in 2007, Tamim batted with 13 different partners for the opening wicket. Imrul’s arrival changed all that. Now, not only does Bangladesh have a stable opening pair but they also boast one of their most prosperous partnerships in fiveday cricket. The left-arm pair might mean business every time they go out to bat in the middle but Imrul informed that they take the mickey out of each other more often than not. “We share a very funny relationship. Serious discussions are very rare among us. Most of the time you will notice Tamim taunting me for something or the other,” Imrul told the media after the end of the game. “I do not know why but we work extremely well when we go to the middle. We have been playing with each other, especially in international level, for a while now. I know very well how Tamim deals with himself in the middle. He does the same for me,” said Imrul. l
