Justice for village of widows Kamaruzzaman executed for 1971 atrocities, ending woes of hundreds of victims and their families

Execution enrages Jamaat supporters

n Mohammad Jamil Khan Condemned war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, a key organiser of infamous al-Badr force in Sherpur during the 1971 Liberation War, was executed at the Dhaka Central Jail last night after the completion of a fiveyear-long legal battle. The Jamaat-e-Islami senior assistant secretary general was given capital punishment for the massacre at Sherpur’s Sohagpur village – widely now known as “Bidhoba Palli” or the village of widows – where at least 164 civilians had been killed and around 170 women raped on July 25, 1971. He, however, did not seek mercy admitting the crimes before the execution. Kamaruzzaman was hanged by the neck at 10:30pm, Inspector General of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune at 10:35pm. The official also dismissed the widespread information that the execution had taken place at 10:01pm.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Minutes after war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman was hanged for his 1971 crimes last night, the Facebook page of Daily Naya Diganta posted a picture with a Bangla inscription that translates into English as “Bangladesh too is inviting danger.” The Bangla inscription appears to be a cutting from a red banner headline of a newspaper. The post also carried the link to a post editorial written by one Dr Rezwan Siddique and published in the Daily Naya Diganta, a pro-Jamaat-e-Islami newspaper. That post-editorial, which mostly discussed the prevailing political situation in the Middle East, abruptly says in the conclusion that Bangladesh has failed to maintain  PAGE 2 COLUMN 3
