Clemency Kamaruzzaman’s last resort The al-Badr leader to die for Sohagpur massacre as apex court upholds death sentence n Ashif Islam Shaon With his review petition rejected by the Supreme Court, former Al Badr vigilante Mohammad Kamaruzzaman can only seek presidential clemency for his war crimes as a last resort to escape the noose. Family members met him at the Dhaka Central Jail yesterday evening after the Appellate Division upheld the Jamaat leader’s death penalty for killing 144 people at Sohagpur village in Sherpur during the 1971 Liberation War. Informed by the jail authorities, 16 members of his family went to the jail at 6:25pm and stayed until 7:45pm. After the family meeting, Kamaruzzaman’s son and a daughter showed V-sign. Eldest son Hasan Imam Wafi said family members were not anxious and that his father was fine both physically and mentally. He alleged that the judgement was delivered upon the government’s directives and that everyone involved, including the prime minister, would have to face consequences. “They will also have to face divine justice. “The charge [Sohagpur killings] for which he has been sentenced to death is baseless. Even the judgement given by the government is historically baseless. He has been denied justice,” Wafi claimed.

reporters at 8pm that the family was allowed to meet the convict as is allowed after the verdict. The official said he had not received a copy of the verdict and so could not take any step to execute the judgement. He assured reporters that the jail authorities were, however, standing ready to execute the sentence. “It is possible to execute the sentence even tonight [meaning Monday night].” Asked why the lawyers were barred from meeting Kamaruzzaman, he said: “We are considering the matter. They can see him later too.” If Kamaruzzaman does not seek presidential clemency admitting the crimes or if the mercy petition is rejected, he will be the second war criminal to be hanged. His colleague and counterpart, another assistant secretary general fo Jamaat, Abdul Quader Molla was executed on December 12, 2013. Molla had not sought clemency. String of coincidences lead to exit n Mohammad Al-Masum Molla

BNP chief Khaleda Zia violated her party’s blockade yesterday for a second consecutive day. She went to offer fatiha at her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko’s grave. The day before, Khaleda had surrendered to court and got her bail reinstated. She has been exempted from appearing in person. Although adamant about not leaving her office, and although the party leaders had previously sought guarantees that Khaleda would be allowed to return to her office, this time around there was no such conditions. Khaleda was treated almost like royalty through the hearing and she went back to her house without objections after three months. Speculations have it that the three-time former premier will be more out and about campaigning for her candidates ahead of the city polls scheduled for April 28. Party work-

ers broke open padlocks of the central office on Sunday after three months during which time the party had been barred from conducting any public activity. All of a sudden political atmosphere appears to be headed in the right direction. The ruling Awami League, intent on clamping down upon political dissent, seems willing

NEWS ANALYSIS to accommodate its rival party too. The BNP for its part and despite its strong rhetoric has evidently slackened the ongoing blockade besides completely withdrawing the typically week-long general strikes. So much so, that its press release of April 4 saying that the “ongoing blockade” would continue was hardly reported since it has ceased to mean business for several weeks now. Both Dhaka and Chittagong are gearing up

for the city polls and both parties seem to be warming up for a head to head contest on a reasonably level playing field. The tolerance of both parties at the top is almost unnerving after a bitter and violent anti-government campaign countered by an iron handed crackdown on BNP leaders, most of whom are either in jail or on the run. A senior BNP leader remains missing for almost a month. This recent development is perhaps more than what meets the eye and a curious string of “coincidences” date back to February 9 when BNP’s blockade and general strike was on in full swing. The influential Brussels-based think tank, International Crisis Group issued a report on Bangladesh strongly criticising both the political parties for their intolerance and aggravating the political crisis, which it warned, could well be exploited by the religious fanatics.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

873 bureaucrats promoted n Sohel Mammun and Asif Showkat Kallol In the biggest spree of promotions since this Awami League government assumed office, a total of 873 bureaucrats were elevated to the ranks of deputy, joint and additional secretary yesterday. Mohibul Haque, a joint secretary of the Public Administration Ministry, confirmed the news. In a major spree after the January 5 elections last year, 70 deputy secretaries of various ministries got promoted to the rank of joint secretary. According to sources, the mass promotion comes on the back of a three-year delay as deserving candidates could not be promoted because of last two years’ political turmoil. Mohibul said that 231 additional secretaries,  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4
