BNP exploring alternatives The decision on the party’s choice for the north likely to come today Al-Masum Molla, n Mohammad Rajib Bhowmick and Munir Momtaj With Abdul Awal Mintoo out of the mayoral race for Dhaka north city polls, the BNP is now exploring alternative avenues for putting up a good fight. The BNP said it would make its decision public today and there are at least two streams of thought regarding what the next course of action should be. One idea is to extend support to Mintoo’s son Tabith M Awal who was included as a back-up option at the eleventh hour before the deadline for submitting nomination papers expired on March 29. On April 1, the Election Commission (EC) cancelled the mayoral bid of Mintoo, a business tycoon and an adviser to BNP chief Khaleda Zia, for violating nomination procedure. The commission yesterday also turned down Mintoo’s appeal against the cancellation of his nomination. The other strategy could be backing more experienced Mahi B Chowdhury, joint secretary general of Bikalpadhara Bangladesh and son of former President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury. The EC has accepted Mahi’s bid for the mayoral race in the Dhaka North City Corporation polls.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Abdul Awal Mintoo’s candidacy was cancelled for valid reasons, say election insiders. Although there are some gray areas in the law which may be subject to interpretation, election officials point out that the BNP-backed mayoral aspirant for Dhaka north was disqualified for a very basic violation. Business magnate Mintoo was said to have harboured ambitions of becoming Dhaka Mayor from even before the turn of the century. Being an advisor to BNP chief Khaleda Zia, also leader of the main political opposition, the former FBCCI president was endorsed by the party to run for mayor of Dhaka north this time. His candidacy was cancelled by the Election Commission on April Fool’s Day, the first day of scrutiny. Mintoo’s appeal against that

decision was rejected yesterday. Former election chief ATM Shamsul Huda said he had fallen victim to a duality of the city corporation. Referring to news reports he said Mintoo’s seconder hailed from Harirampur Union, on the fringes of Dhaka north — an area where people pay taxes to the city and enjoy its services although they do not fall within the city corporation. Hence he is not a voter of Dhaka city, pointed out Huda. If I were the returning officer, I would have cancelled his nomination too.” Another senior election official with substantial experience, refused to go on record, also echoed Huda’s take on the matter. The former chief election commissioner wondered why Mintoo had chosen his  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

BNP’s central office unlocked after three months n Mohammad Al-Masum Molla BNP men broke the three-month lock to enter their Nayapaltan office last evening as the tight security around the place was almost fully relaxed. Around 50 BNP leaders and activists including some minor office bearers cut the lock around 7pm and entered the office which they had not been able to do since January 3. Insiders said party chief Khaleda Zia might go to the office today if she attends a scheduled appearance before a Dhaka court. The party has been urging the government to open the office over the last months but that call has never been heeded. Recently, a

BNP delegation met the chief election commissioner and urged the Election Commission to unlock the office. Last evening, the BNP men could be seen cleaning thick layers of dust that have deposited on furniture during the last three months that the office had been kept under lock and key. They were also seen clearing small mounds of papers and documents. Asadul Karim Sahin, assistant office secretary of the party, was accompanied to the office by around 50 supporters. The office had remained unattended since plainclothesmen picked up BNP’s Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvy from there  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4
