In the Dhaka North mayoral race, the wealthiest contender is Annisul Huq followed by Abdul Awal Mintoo, who also takes second place for the number of cases pending. Among the mayoral hopefuls, Mirza Abbas took the gold, Abul Awal Mintoo the silver and Sayeed Khokon the bronze on the podium of affluence. In an affidavit submitted to the EC, Abbas said he owned around Tk1,196,850,487 in fixed and movable wealth; his wife also owns a further Tk133,536,074. The former mayor is currently facing 37 cases, the affidavit reads, adding that the BNP standing committee member had Tk756,525,903 in debts. The affidavit also claimed that he is a graduate and a businessman. Mirza Abbas – also the convener of BNP’s Dhaka city unit – is currently underground; his lawyer submitted the nomination papers on his behalf. Meanwhile, the affidavit of Awami League-backed candidate Sayeed Khokon shows that he owns Tk479,364,216 and had Tk192,777,000 in loans. Khokon, whose affidavit showed him as a Dhaka University graduate, had been relieved from five cases in the past. Another mayoral hopeful, BNP leader Asaduzzaman Ripon’s affidavit says he owns around Tk3,000,000 and his wife Tk800,000.
