Bangabandhu’s 95th birth anniversary today n Tribune Report

The nation will observe the 95th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the National Children’s Day today. Different socio-political and cultural organisations including the ruling Awami League and its affiliated bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day. President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the day paying glowing tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The day is a public holiday. National dailies will publish special supplements while Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and other private television channels and FM radio stations will air special programmes highlighting the significance of the day. The Cultural Affairs Ministry, Religious Affairs Ministry, Social Welfare Affairs Ministry, Bangla Academy, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Nazrul Institute, Islamic Foundation and other institutions will hold discussions and cultural programmes to mark Bangabandhu’s birthday. Besides, special prayers will be offered at mosques and all the places of worships across the country on this occasion. The Awami League’s programmes for the day include hoisting of the national and party flags at 6:30am and placing of wreaths at Bangabandhu’s portrait at Dhanmondi’s Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at 7am, said a press release from Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s political office. Children have not been spared of the ongoing political unrest as they fall victims to the acts done by the pro-blockade and hartal activists or the administrative actions to tame the violence. In the last two months, children have been shot, burnt, slaughtered, maimed, arrested and beaten. At least five of them died in crossfire, 15 in petrol bombs and another two in crude bomb blasts, according to findings of a children’s rights body. Many more have been crippled, maimed and injured. The sorry state comes to the forefront as Bangladesh observes National Children’s Day today, with a prime ministerial promise to make the country a safe abode for them. Just the other day, a police constable admitted to slaughtering a fourth grader who was abducted on his way back from school for ransom. The little boy had recognised the policeman. He was found dead in a sack at the constable’s house. Children continue to fall victims, become tools of crime or accessories to criminal gangs even as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made the call yesterday. Children will be begging for alms on the streets even as rights activists make lofty pronouncements. Children will be trying to make a living and earn livelihoods for their families when they should be at school, even as the country observes the children’s day with due solemnity.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 2

Salahuddin hearing adjourned until April 8 n Ashif Islam Shaon The High Court yesterday adjourned until April 8 further hearing on a petition seeking an order on the government to produce BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed before it. The bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Gabinda Chandra Tagore passed the adjournment order when it concluded the day’s proceedings. At the hearing, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the court that Salahuddin had not been arrested and was not in the custody of any law enforcement agency. The attorney general read out from reports

submitted by law enforcement agencies on the whereabouts of Salahuddin, a joint secretary general of the BNP. The agencies informed the court that they were trying to find the missing BNP leader. After the submission, the petitioner’s counsel, BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed, told the court that they would reply to the reports. “We got the police report around 3pm. We will mention four previous orders over such incidents. We are studying it and will talk on some points. But it will take time for the submission,” he said. He prayed the court adjourn the hearing as the court will go into vacation from today.

The attorney general opposed further hearings, saying that law enforcers were trying to find Salahuddin and that it was their duty to find persons reported to be missing. There is no need to continue hearing on the rule, he said. He said it was not possible to say how long police would take to find him. “In investigations into criminal acts, a time frame cannot be fixed. Two journalists [Sagar and Runi] were killed. Until today the investigation has not finished and charges could not be framed,” he said. The court said it would hear the submission  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4
