Stay hearing on Khaleda warrant deferred n Mohammad Al-Masum Molla The High Court yesterday deferred by a week the hearing on a plea seeking a stay order on the arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia in two graft cases. The bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Md Khasruzzaman set March 12 as the next date for hearing on the petitions for a change of judge and stay on the arrest warrant. Additional Attorney General Md Mamtaz Uddin Fakir stood for the prosecution and Md Khurshid Alam Khan for the plaintiff Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). The warrant was issued on February 25, after the 69-year-old former three-time prime minister Khaleda Zia skipped court appearance on several occasions. On Tuesday, March 3, Khaleda’s lawyers moved the High Court for a stay and withdrawal of the warrants. A day later, the court just included the pleas into the case documents, keeping the warrant valid. The warrant, however, had not found its way to Gulshan police station as of yesterday. The government and ACC raised two questions: since the warrant had been issued, Khaleda is now a fugitive and does not have the right to ask for legal intervention.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

FBI launches probe into Avijit murder n Mohammad Jamil Khan Visiting officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation yesterday started their probe into the murder of scientist and blogger Avijit Roy last week. “The four-member FBI team visited the Detective Branch headquarters on Mintoo Road in the morning to get updates on the investigation of the Avijit murder case,” Monirul Islam, the joint commissioner of DB police, said. The team led by Jagdeep Singh Khangura arrived in Dhaka early yesterday and went to the DB office around 11am. During their three-hour stay, the FBI members held meetings with detectives and obtained information about the evidence collected from the crime scene and the seizure list, a DB official who did not wish to be named said.

Tamim Iqbal registered the highest score by a Bangladesh batsman in World Cups in their Pool A match against Scotland at Saxton Oval in Nelson, New Zealand yesterday CRICINFO

Tigers a step away from quarters n Mazhar Uddin from Nelson Bangladesh swatted away any pre-match jitter that might have crept in following the Sri Lanka defeat as they got the better of Scotland by six wickets in a Pool A encounter at Saxton Oval yesterday. In pursuit of 319 against a determined Scotland, Bangladesh barely broke sweat, reaching their destination with six wickets and 11 deliveries remaining. In the process, Bangla-

desh also registered their highest successful run-chase in the World Cup. With this win, Bangladesh gained some much-needed momentum ahead of their all-important clash against England this Monday in Adelaide. Co-host New Zealand (eight points), 1996 champions Sri Lanka (six points) and fourtime winners Australia (five points) are as good as through while Bangladesh are occupying fourth place with five points. England are down at fifth with just two points from four matches.

Bangladesh are virtually competing with England for a quarterfinal berth. With four teams from Pool A progressing to the last eight, Bangladesh can officially confirm their place by defeating England in their next game. Bangladesh will take on the Kiwis in their final match next Friday in Hamilton. England’s two remaining matches are against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It was a superb display with the bat after the first half of the game went horribly wrong for Bangladesh.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 2
