Khaleda key accused in blast case Crude bomb explosions at a rally led by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan gives rise to Khaleda being named, for the first time, as prime accused in a violence-related case

n Mohammad Jamil Khan BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been named the prime accused in a case filed over a crude bomb attack on a street rally Monday led by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan in the capital’s up-market Gulshan neighbourhood. Although Khaleda has been tagged in two other violence-related cases over the last month, she had previously only been named an abettor. This is the first time that Khaleda has been named a prime accused in a violence-related case. The case was filed with Gulshan police station around 11:45pm on Monday by Ismail Hossain Bacchu, chairman of Talkora union parishad under Choddogram police station, Comilla district, accusing the BNP chief and 13 other leaders and activists of the party for the attack. According to the case statement, the other accused BNP leaders are Vice-Chairman Selima Rahman, 65, BNP women’s front Secretary Shirin Sultana, 45, Khaleda’s Personal Secretary Shimul Biswas, 50, BNP Deputy Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel, Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed, 50, Khaleda’s Advisor Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, BNP Vice-Chairman Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, 65, central committee member Humayun Kabir Khan, 50, former ward councillor Abdul Kaiyum, 50, former MP of Savar Dewan Salah Uddin, 50, Mostafa, 45, Mamun, 45, and Manik, 35. Case no 25 was filed with Gulshan police station under penal code sections 143, 323, 324, 326, 307, 109 and

the case was recorded under section 3/6 of the Explosives Act. The case against the three-time former prime minister is being filed for unlawful assembly, various clauses of voluntarily causing hurt, hurt with explosives and grievous hurt with explosives, and intentionally committing an act that results in injury or death. The highest penalty is ten years in

prison if no fatalities result from the incident; if a victim dies, the accused may face life in prison. Contacted, Rafiqul Islam, officer-incharge of Gulshan police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that Ismail Hossain Bachchu filed the case with Gulshan police on Monday night. “Our officials are investigating the case and action will soon be taken

against those responsible,” he said. At least seven people were injured when two crude bombs went off in the middle of the procession in the highly guarded Gulshan neighbourhood in the capital. Meanwhile, the VIP buildings of the female section of the Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur are being  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

For about a week now, the authorities at the Kashimpur high security jail in Gazipur are renovating and repairing the two VIP buildings in the female section of the prison. These two special blocks – Rajanigandha 1 and Rajanigandha 2 – each comprising six rooms are generally used for housing high profile political prisoners. Although authorities said it was just routine work, the matter has been fuelling a rumour that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who has been holed up in her Gulshan office for a month and a half, might be arrested at any time. On Monday, she was sued for the crude bomb blasts in a procession led by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan in Gulshan. She was then inside the office about half a kilometre away from the spot, but the 69-year-old three-time former prime minister was charged with conducting the blasts. Although Khaleda has been tagged in a couple of other violence-related cases over the last month or so, none of those cases made her the prime accused; her name came up only as an abettor. According to the jail authorities, the female section is capable of holding up to 200 prisoners. At present, there are 257 inmates in Kashimpur but the authorities have never used the two VIP blocks despite the overcrowding in the general section. The last VIP prisoner to have dwelled in one of these cells is former BNP law-

maker Shammi Akhter; she was released on bail on January 22 last year. Since then, the VIP blocks have remained unused. The two two-storey blocks now have new colours and new furniture have been recently brought in. The utility connections to the buildings have also been repaired recently to ensure interrupted power and water, prison sources said.

The two-storey buildings get new paint, furniture and repaired utility connections Once before in December last year, the Kashimpur high security jail saw renovation works before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went there on the occasion of the National Prison Week. Seeking anonymity, a high official from the prison authorities said the renovation works are going on for an something “very urgent.” When contacted, Umme Salma, jail super of the female section at the prison, told the Dhaka Tribune: “No renovation work is going on here. Some repairing are being done as part of a routine work in the jail. We do these kind of works regularly.” She also denied having received any special instruction from the higher authorities. l

Bangladesh will begin their 2015 ICC World Cup campaign today against Afghanistan at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Star Sports 1 will transmit the Pool A game live from 9:30am. The Tigers will be desperate for a winning start although it will be anything but easy against the dangerous Associate side. The two sides have met each other only once before with the Afghans beating their illustrious opponents by 32 runs in the 2014 Asia Cup in Fatullah. Afghanistan’s win created a stir in the cricket world as it was not only their maiden appearance in the Asia Cup but their victory over Bangladesh came in just their fourth ODI against a Test-playing nation. Afghanistan’s win was lauded in many quarters, considering that they only took four matches before registering their first competitive victory compared to Bangladesh’s first triumph in 28 attempts. In that eventful Asia Cup encounter, Bangladesh were dismissed for 222 with 13 balls remaining, chasing 254. From a relatively comfortable position of 161/4, the Tigers lost four wickets for just four runs, a morale-shattering de-

The newly appointed US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat has set her tone to improve the bilateral relation between Dhaka and Washington, DC. She said both President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry had given her a guideline to do everything in her power to help strengthen, broaden and deepen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

‘The US views on Bangladesh election are well known’ “I pledged to you that I would do that,” she said yesterday at her first press conference in Bangladesh, at the American Club in the capital. Bernicat, who sought to be posted in Bangladesh for 30 years, presented her credentials to President Abdul Hamid on February 4. “I am eager to work with the government, the opposition and the civil society on our vital and common interests over the coming years of my tenure,” Bernicat said. About the US views on the last general elections, on January 5 last year, she said: “The US views on Bangladesh election are well known and on the record.”

feat staring right at their faces. National discard Ziaur Rahman tried his best to change the situation with a quickfire 22-ball 41, but it proved to be inadequate at the end. This time, however, Zia is not a part of the Tigers’ World Cup setup. A bad run of form saw the all-rounder losing his place in the side after the ODI series at home against India last year. Zia, currently busy with the ongoing National Cricket League, might not be playing today but he is closely following his teammates on television and in the newspaper. And ahead of their crucial opener, the 28-year old told Dhaka Tribune that Bangladesh should not worry as he thinks that the Tigers are a much better side than Afghanistan. Zia also believes their loss against the Afghans was an upset. “I think everyone will agree that Bangladesh are far better than Afghanistan, both on pen and paper. That day (Asia Cup), we did a few things wrong while they made sure of not doing anything silly. Actually, it was an upset,” he said yesterday. “(Sohag) Gazi got injured while fielding so he was unable to bowl and bat properly. Both our bowling and batting were hampered that day through

The war crimes tribunal is set to pronounce its verdict today in the case against Maulana Abdus Subhan, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, more than two months after the case proceedings ended. Subhan was made accused in 1972 by a special tribunal for collaborating with the Pakistani occupation forces and summoned. But he had already fled to Pakistan with former Jamaat chief Ghulam Azam, according to the prosecution. The three-member International Crimes Tribunal 2, led by its Chairman Justice Obaidul Hasan, yesterday fixed the date. Incumbent Nayeb-e-Ameer (vice-president) of Jamaat Subhan, 77, is facing nine charges of crimes against humanity including genocide and murders of unarmed people, mainly Hindus, along with looting and setting houses on fire in Pabna during the 1971 Liberation War. The charges are based on separate incidents taken place between April 13 and October 30 in which about 450 unarmed people were killed. Son of Sheikh Naimuddin and Nurani Begum of Tailakundi village of Sujanagar upazila in Pabna, Subhan in 1971 was the founding ameer of Pabna unit Jamaat and Majlish-e-Sura member of the erstwhile United Pakistan Jamaat. As the war began, Subhan was made general secretary of Pabna unit Peace Committee and later promoted to vice-chairman post of the associated body of the Pakistani Army.
