more die in firebomb Arrest spree punishes prisons Six attacks during blockade Country's 68 jails designed for 34,147 inmates but currently hold 71,606 n Mohammad Jamil Khan A surge in the number of prison inmates resulting from increased law and order operations has crammed many jails so tightly that inmates cannot find the space to lie down to sleep, inmates told the Dhaka Tribune. Some 5,000 new inmates, put behind bars between January 6 and February 2 this year, have increased the number of prisoners awaiting trial from 46,119 on January 1 to 51,119 on February 2, according to jail records. The country’s prisons are packed with at least twice the number of inmates they were designed to hold, with some jails, like that in Chapainawabganj, holding up to six times their intended inmate population, jail records show.

Yet in another brutal petrol bomb attack on a truck three people were burnt to death at the Mahilara bus stand in Gournadi upazila of Barisal early yesterday. The attack came hours after a deadly arson on a bus in Gaibandha on Friday night where four passengers were charred on the spot and three others succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The victims included two children. Sajjad Hossain, OC of the Gournadi police station, said the incident took place around 5:15am. Driver Ijaeydul Islam, 35; his fatherin-law Motaleb Sheikh, 65, a resident of Tambulkhana Bangdoba in Faridpur; and helper Munnu Mia, 45, died on the spot, the OC said. Owner of the truck Ripon Mia said the truck laden with poultry-feed was going from Bagher Bazaar of Gazipur to Barisal. After the petrol bomb bit the truck, the driver lost control and it hit a roadside tree.

According to sources at Dhaka Central Jail Headquarters, the total inmate capacity of the country’s 68 jails is 34,147 but they are currently holding 71,606 inmates. Data collected from 25 jails by the Dhaka Tribune showed that many of the country’s already overcrowded jails have seen a 20% surge in the number of inmates this last month. At the already overcrowded Dhaka Central Jail, 7,621 inmates are currently being held in a facility designed for 2,682. Forman Ali, senior jail superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail, told the Dhaka Tribune that the chronically overburdened jail holds nearly 6,000 inmates all year round, adding: “The number of prisoners has risen in the last month as we could not transfer prisoners to other jails because of the hartal and blockade.” “Once we are able to present prisoners before the courts and transfer them to Kashimpur Jail, we hope the situation will improve,” he said. n Muhammad Zahidul Islam Following a cyber threat in a Facebook page, the leading mobile phone operators of the country have expressed their fears about possible sabotages at their installations. In a Facebook status update on February 3, self-proclaimed political organisation “Z-Force Andolon Cell” threatened to torch all mobile phone towers and cut cable connections across the country unless these facilities are restored in BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office. “This is a statement from one of our central leaders” – that is how the status starts. “If cable, internet and mobile connections to the house of democracy [Gulshan office] of the mother of the nation Khaleda Zia are not restored, then we will ask the freedom-loving gallant soldiers of democracy to torch and burn down all the mobile towers and cable offices around the country.

“What will we do with the ‘dish lines?’ We do not need the media that do not carry our news. Burn all the cable operators’ offices. If the mother of the nation does not get cable, internet and mobile network, then nobody in the country will. Sheikh Hasina will have to shoulder the responsibility for all these. We want peace, not war. We are being forced,” the status reads. The status ends with “Bangladesh Zindabad,” the official slogan of the BNP. It is attached with a video presentation that gives the operators a 12hour ultimatum to restore the connections to the Gulshan office. “Z-Force” was the name given to one of the first military brigades formed during the Liberation War in 1971 by the Bangladesh Army. The force got its name from its chief Ziaur Rahman, the first military autocrat of Bangladesh and founder of BNP. In the early hours of January 31, the power connection to the Gulshan office  PAGE 2 COLUMN 5

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said business operation is being disrupted in most districts outside Dhaka because of the political programmes of the BNP-led alliance that have been going on for over a month. The minister made the statement while addressing in a press conference on releasing a comparative report on economic indicators between the periods of 2001-2005 and 2009-2014 at his ministry office yesterday. He said economic activities at the district levels should be kept out of the purview of the political programmes for the sake of the country’s economic health. “There is no disruption in the lives and business activities in Dhaka in the blockade,” he claimed. He also said that the government will do an official assessment of losses in March. When asked when the turmoil was going to come to an end, the minister

A lot is at stake for the high-flying home side as Bangladesh will look to end their 12-year title drought when they take on Malaysia in the final of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup today. The six-nation mega event will conclude today at Bangabandhu National Stadium with Bangladesh taking the field at 5pm for the grand finale of the tournament, designed to pay tribute to the ‘father of the nation’, for the first time in three editions. Bangladesh kicked off their campaign with a defeat against Malaysia before two identical 1-0 wins paved their way to the final. They were involved in a gruelling semifinal against tournament favourites Thailand U-23 where the hosts impressed with their fighting character to silent the critics and upset their illustrious opponents. Therefore, it can easily be said Malaysia should brace themselves to face a more strong and organised home side. However, with only 24 hours to recover from the stress, the home side’s biggest motivation is playing the final. The support of over 26,000 spectators also played a vital role behind the players’
