RAB yesterday announced rewards for the capture of fire-bombers or information leading to their arrests. Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) declared the bounties in eight different packages ranging from Tk10,000 to Tk1 lakh to help trace the anarchists. On the other hand, police declared Tk5 lakh as reward for those who can provide information about those who set fire to the passenger bus in the capital’s Jatrabari area on Friday night. Just a year ago, law enforcers in 2013, also declared reward for the capture of the miscreants who unleashed violence but such announcement received hardly any response. Director General of RAB Benazir Ahmed claimed that those who are involved in such crimes are hired goons. “A group of people are hiring these criminals to perpetrate violence,” he said while addressing the media at the battalion headquarters yesterday. “Killing innocent people in the name of movement cannot be a way to do politics. Rather it should be considered a criminal offence.” None will be allowed to kill people by throwing petrol bombs, he cautioned. The RAB boss further said those who would provide information about the miscreants involved in arson attacks will be reward with Tk1 lakh. The same amount will also be given if anyone can help RAB catch petrol bomb attackers red-handed. Informants will receive Tk50,000 if they are able to give information on those planning crude bomb attacks. They will receive Tk25,000 if they can identify and trace miscreants from published or aired information in the news. Furthermore, there is a Tk25,000 reward for anyone who can help catch a crude bomb attacker on the spot and a Tk20,000 reward for anyone who can provide information on an attacker.

n Mohammad Jamil Khan The overburdened National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) is straining to meet the needs of nearly double the number of patients that it is equipped to treat. Blockade victims have added to the usual pressures and the Burn Institute register book records that nearly 517 patients are now undergoing treatment at the 300 bed institute. Partha Shankar Pal, resident surgeon of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute said: “The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has a 10-bed capacity which is now full and nine more critically ill patients were ad-

If a patient suddenly needs ICU support, we will not be able to provide it.” Some 83 people, including women and children, have been treated at the Burn Institute in the last 20 days, of whom 51 are still undergoing treatment. Doctors told the Dhaka Tribune that the pressure of serving so many more patients than the institute is staffed and equipped to handle has made the treatment of critically injured patients difficult and raised the risk of infection. Recovering burn patients, doctors said, were vulnerable to infection and the often fatal complication of septicaemia. An arson attack victim receives treatment lying in the corridor of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday as the surge in burn victims supplied in large measure by blockade violence has left every bed in the burn unit occupied MAHMUD HOSSAIN OPU going treatment on an in-patient basis. “Since the institute runs under the DMCH, when we need a bed, we arrange it from other DMCH departments,” he said. “But if a minimum distance is not maintained between burn patients’ beds, the risk of transmitting infection

increases, putting the lives of patients at risk. There is nothing we can do about this,” the resident surgeon said. He said the only solution is for patients go to other hospitals for treatment. “Due to the huge number of patients and the shortage of manpower, we face problems in providing timely

treatment. Delays can threaten burn victims’ lives,” Partha said.

As the BNP leaders did not allow Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inside party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office yesterday, the ruling Awami League leaders termed it frustrating as well as indecent. PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury, who accompanied the premier during the visit around 8:30pm, told the Dhaka Tribune that they were very upset at the attitude of the BNP’s responsible leaders.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s youngest son Arafat Rahman Koko died in Malaysia yesterday from a massive cardiac arrest. BNP Standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman told media that Koko, 44, died around 12:30pm Malaysia time when he was on his way to the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur from his residence.

Arafat Rahman Koko, the youngest son of Khaleda Zia, died on his way to hospital Shamsuddin Didar, an official of Khaleda Zia’s press wing, told the Dhaka Tribune that Koko’s janaza will be held today after Zohr prayers at the Malaysian national mosque Masjid Negara in capital Kuala Lumpur. Former lawmaker and BNP leader ABM Ashrafuddin Nizan said Koko’s body has been kept in the mortuary of the University of Malaya. Koko has been living in a rented house as a citizen in Ampang in Kuala Lumpur with his wife Shamila Rahman  PAGE 2 COLUMN 2

“We believed that Khaleda was ill [as claimed by the BNP leaders]. But the BNP leaders could at least receive the prime minister inside the office area. But they did not do so; they kept the main gate padlocked,” he said. Hasina went to Khaleda’s Gulshan office to express condolence at the death of her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, 44, who died of cardiac arrest in Malaysia yesterday. When news broke that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was going to visit her arch rival Khaleda Zia to express condolences on the death of her son Koko, social media got flooded with status updates from crossed fingers. But skeptics were eventually proven right when the PM was sent back from the gate of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office around 40 minutes

past eight last evening. Even before the PM’s entourage arrived in Gulshan, BNP chief’s special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas told media that his boss, who had fallen ill after hearing the news of her son’s demise, was on heavy sedative and therefore could not meet the PM. Shimul Biswas also told media that they had expressed their gratitude to the PM for her concern and would inform them in due time when Khaleda

Zia felt better to meet the PM. “I talked to the premier’s Personal Assistant Secretary Saifuzzaman Shekhor at 7:10pm, and I told him that the BNP chairperson was ill and was sleeping. But still the prime minister came and I thank her for that,” he said. “We brought a condolence book in front of the office for the prime minister to sign in but she was gone by the time we reached there.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

n Tribune Report It was also a Saturday 34 years ago on May 30 when Khaleda Zia came to know she had become a widow. Her husband, military strongman and then president, Ziaur Rahman, had been assassinated in Chittagong earlier that morning. This Saturday was no different from the last 20 days when Khaleda spent “confined” to her party office in Gulshan. But her habitually quiet afternoon was disrupted. Her two sistersin-law, wives of her brothers Syeed Iskandar and Shamim Iskandar, came to visit her. They bore bad news. Arafat Rahman Koko, the young-

er son of the three-time former prime minister who heads the BNP founded by Zia, died of cardiac arrest around 2:30pm yesterday in Malaysia. He was reportedly ill for long and collapsed on his way to the hospital. Khaleda did not come out of her first floor chamber since hearing the news. She was not taking any visitors, said a senior policymaker of the party which leads the 20-party alliance. “She is weeping,” said one. Another said the 69-year widow and mother of two had fallen ill. This comes amid an indefinite blockade enforced by the BNP-led  PAGE 2 COLUMN 5
