Police doubt RAB’s murder motive claim RAB claims a Rajshahi Jubo Dal leader masterminded Prof Shafiul murder Islam Shaon in Dhaka and n Ashif Mohammad Jamil Khan from Rajshahi Police do not appear convinced with the Rapid Action Battalion’s (RAB) claim of having solved the murder mystery of Rajshahi University Professor Shafiul Islam hinting at a personal issue and implicating a Jubo Dal leader. Abdus Samad Pintu, 34, former vice-president of the RU unit of BNP’s student front Chhatra Dal and now a leader of the party’s youth front, wanted Shafiul killed because the professor had “misbehaved” with his wife, RAB said.

Police have been saying from the beginning that Jamaat-Shibir men were behind the killing According to RAB, the arrestees admitted that Pintu was the mastermind and five others executed the killing mission, all of whom have been arrested in Dhaka and Rajshahi. They were brought before the media in a briefing at the Dhaka headquarters of the force yesterday. Rajshahi police, who believe that Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir were involved with the murder, said they would interrogate the six arrested by RAB because a “personal issue” could not be the only motive. The five others arrested by RAB are Katakhali Municipality unit Jubo Dal Organising Secretary Ariful Islam Man-

ik, 33, and Md Sabuj Sheikh, 18, Sirajul Islam Kalu, 22, Md Al-Mamun, 31 and Ibrahim Khalil alias Tokai Babu, 21. Police later claimed that Sabuj, Mamun and Babu were Shibir activists.

RAB’s version

During yesterday’s media briefing, Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of RAB’s Media Wing, said: “Pintu’s wife Nasreen is an officer at the accounts section of the university. Shafiul had misbehaved with her. The arrestees admitted that they had killed the teacher over the incident.” The RAB official did not elaborate on the nature of “misbehaviour.” However, another RAB official, seeking anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune that it was “sexual abuse.” When reminded that Rajshahi police had found Jamaat-Shibir militant link with the murder, the RAB director said they found nothing of the sort. RAB also said two others – Rajshahi district Jubo Dal Convenor Anwar Hossain Uzzal and “Jamai” Babu, who they thought were also involved with the murder – are on the run. According to RAB, Pintu and Uzzal first made the plan to kill the professor while Jubo Dal leader Ariful Islam Manik led the attack. Sabuj was the first to hack Shafiul. RAB further said apart from the six already arrested and the two absconding, they also suspected three others who were part of the 11 arrested by police in connection with the murder. They are Arif, Sagar and Jinnah. Mufti said 10-15 days before the incident, Pintu had locked into an  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Smugglers gamed Biman crew roster as automated system lay idle

Efficient Tigers take 2-0 lead Uddin Khan n Minhaz from Chittagong Bangladesh ended the Chittagong-leg of their bilateral series with a win as the hosts took a 2-0 lead over Zimbabwe courtesy a 68-run victory in the second of the five-ODI series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) yesterday. The three remaining ODIs will now be held in Dhaka starting with the third match this Wednesday. As desired by Bangladesh ODI skipper Mashrafe bin Mortaza, the 68-run win in the second ODI came on the back of a team performance. The match, however, was anything but a one-sided affair, especially after the home side lost their 10 wickets for the addition of just 93 runs following a 158-run stand for the opening wicket between Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque. In pursuit of 252 for victory, Zimbabwe were bundled out for 183 in 44.5 overs, falling short by 68 runs with Mashrafe picking up three wickets and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny scalping 4/29 – his best bowling figure in an ODI. Earlier on the day, Mashrafe decided to bat first but his decision raised a few questions considering the dew factor. Tamim and Anamul, however, put  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

A Tk20cr software package acquired to bring transparency to the process of planning schedules for pilots and crew has never been used by the national flag carrier. Some senior officials are unwilling to use the automated system because the manual system can be manipulated, making it helpful for gold smuggling, sources in the airline said. Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ automated crew and pilot scheduling system has lain idle since it was purchased three years ago. Following a major bust last week against senior Biman officials connected to gold smuggling, the board of Biman Bangladesh Airlines decided to use the automated system at an urgent meeting on Saturday night. Earlier, in a 12-hour operation, detectives arrested five members of the smuggling racket including three Biman high-ups – Captain Abu Mohammad Aslam Shaheed, the pilot of an aircraft and chief of Biman’s planning

Biman sources said Mahmudul Haque Palash, the godson of Biman chairman Air Marshal (retd) Jamal Uddin Ahmed, manipulated the schedules of the pilots and crews together with Mohammad Aslam Shaheed, Emdad Hossain and Tozammel Hossain. “They made between Tk10 to Tk50 lakh every flight from Dubai and Jeddah,” a senior officer said, on condition of anonymity. The gang bought schedules of different routes but their main target was Dubai and Jeddah.
