Cyber jihadis claim second murder

Ansar al Islam 2 Facebook page shows three targets hit, with two more to go Jamil Khan and n Mohammad Ashif Islam Shaon A little known extremist outfit has claimed responsibility for the murder of Rajshahi University (RU) professor, Shafiul Islam Lilon, on a Facebook community page named Ansar al Islam Bangladesh 2. The responsibility for the killing, within hours of his death on an anonymously operated social media page, is the second such claim on Facebook in recent times.

Investigators believe it to be a high-tech avatar of Ansarullah Bangla Team The social scientist was hacked to death outside his house in the Chauddapai area of Rajshahi city on Saturday afternoon and succumbed to his injuries in hospital some hours later. Earlier, a Facebook page run under the name Ansar al Islam, took responsibility for the killing of Daffodil University student Ashraful Alam, the Dhaka Tribune reported on November 4. The 22-year-old was killed in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka. The Facebook

page claiming responsibility for his murder was shut down on October 28. Barrister Mahbubur Rahman, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), said his force was aware of the Facebook page and had started an investigation into the murder claim. “We will seek from Facebook details about the ownership and authorship of the page and details of Facebook users who liked the page or posted comments on it,” he said. Observation of activity on the page over several hours suggested that most comments and likes on the page came from people claiming to reside in London, with a smaller number claiming to reside in Dhaka. Many of the those whose present location was listed as London claimed Sylhet or Dhaka as their places of origin. A Detective Branch (DB) high official of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told the Dhaka Tribune that investigators learned about the outfit from its Facebook page last month. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said the outfit apparently targeted bloggers.

The Tigers roar triumphantly over their victory against Zimbabwe in the final game of the Test series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong yesterday

Series sweep completes Tigers turnaround n Mazhar Uddin from Chittagong Bangladesh were finally able to bury the ghosts of a disappointing year as they coasted to a 186-run win over Zimbabwe on the fifth day of the third and final Test at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium yesterday to record their second series sweep in five-day cricket. The first time the Tigers sealed a series whitewash was back in 2009 against the West Indies in the Caribbean although that was a two-Test series.

Resuming the final day’s play on 71/1, Zimbabwe required a further 378 runs for a consolation victory. The Bangladesh bowlers, however, had other ideas as the visitors were all out for 262, falling short by 184 runs to give the hosts the much-anticipated and much-needed series sweep. It was a moment of pride, happiness and relief at the same time for the Bangladesh cricketers and fans. After experiencing countless defeats and controversies throughout 2014, the series sweep

came at just the right time. The 3-0 series win will give the Tigers double cause for joy as it came against their arch rivals. The Bangladesh players though started celebrating a bit too early when they uprooted the stumps after the umpire had judged Natsai M’shangwe leg-before wicket off paceman Shafiul Islam. The Tigers’ jubilations were on hold temporarily as M’shangwe asked for a review. It was in vain as the third umpire agreed with the decision of the on-field umpire.

The Appellate Division of Supreme Court asked the government yesterday to increase the retirement age of lower court judges as a good number of judges will go on retirement within a few months, which the court thinks will create a “vacuum” in the judicial system. The court came up with the opinion during a hearing of Masder Hossain case, known as the judiciary separation case. The eight-member court (full court) headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain fixed the next date for the hearing on December 14. During the hearing, Barrister Amir Ul Islam told the court that 48 senior district judges would go on retirement soon, and a vacuum may be created in the judiciary. It will also affect in the case disposal rate and the quality of judgement, he said.

The drive against unfit vehicles is necessary, but the way it is conducted across the country is wrong, making it a ‘futile’ exercise, say experts. “The drive against unfit and illegal vehicles must be a round-the-year exercise.

Agreeing with Barrister Amir Ul Islam, the chief justice said: “It is true that if this number of judges go on retirement soon, it will create a problem. Especially to dispose civil cases, where will we find this many experienced judges?” On June 2, 2009, the Judicial Service Commission recommended the government to increase the retirement age of lower court judges from 59 to 62 years. The chief justice asked the attorney general about the progress of the recommendation’s implementation. In reply, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the chief executive of the state (the prime minister) agreed to increase the retirement age, but the process would take some time. At one point of the hearing, the attorney general sought time until December 14 from the court. An associate  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

Unidentified gunmen did just what law enforcers do during raids n Ashif Islam Shaon The “unidentified gunmen,” who abducted two brothers from the capital’s Darussalam area on Friday, did everything that law enforcers would normally do during a raid to arrest criminals. In the early hours on Friday, they seized mobile phones from some rickshaw pullers and security guards, who

were drinking tea nearby, cleared an alley that led to the house of the two brothers, before eventually abducting Omar Faruk, 32, and Firoz, 27, both book traders by profession. Witnesses said 10-12 men, equipped with firearms and walkie-talkies, appeared on white microbus around 2:15am in the Bholartek area. They parked the microbus at the mouth of an alley.

“They showed us guns and asked where Faruk and Firoz lived. They frisked the seven people who were at the tea stall at that time and found three mobile phones. They seized the phones and ordered everyone to not leave the place until they told us to,” a witness said. “We know Faruk and Firoz since the time they rented two apartments here seven years ago. Faruk lives with

his parents, wife and two sons on the ground floor of a two-storey building. Firoz lives on the ground floor of a three-storey building with his wife and two kids. Both buildings are owned by the same person and the buildings are surrounding by a common wall,” the witness said. After seizing the mobile phones, the armed men then climbed over the wall to enter the compound of the building.

This three-Test series will be a memorable one for Bangladesh for a long time to come. The Tigers created and broke several records but one piece of history is likely to give them the ultimate satisfaction besides being the perfect riposte for the critics who doubt Bangladesh’s place in five-day cricket. With the exception of England, no other Test nation have been able to register a series sweep in a three-Test series or more in their first 14 years in

Islamia College principal held in Shafiul murder case n Tribune report Police yesterday detained a local college principal along with 19 others over the killing of Rajshahi University (RU) Professor Dr AKM Shafiul Islam Lilon. Humayun Ahmed, principal of Islamia College located in the Jamaat stronghold of Binodpur in Rajshahi city, and several others were taken into custody from Binodpur, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Barrister Mahbubur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune. Professor Shafiul Islam was hacked to death outside his house in the Chauddapai area of Rajshahi city on Saturday afternoon. He died several hours later while undergoing treatment for his wounds. A Facebook page, apparently representing an unknown militant group, has claimed responsibility for the murder. Professor Shafiul had a long standing suspicion that Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir men might physically assault him. The professor, who has always been vocal against Jamaat-Shibir’s activities on campus, shared his fear of an attack over the last eight years with family members, relatives and close associates several times, one of his relatives told the Dhaka Tribune. Shafiul is not the only teacher of the university to have been killed. On December 24, 2004, Dr Md Yunus, a
