Little known but crimes equally grave Khokon Razakar fled to Sweden before the trial of his war crimes started in 2013 n Julfikar Ali Manik He might not be as widely known as some of the other high profile war criminals, but the gravity of the crimes he had committed against humanity in 1971 was not even an ounce lesser. He is none other than fugitive Zahid Hossain Khokon, now 72, a razakar commander of the Nagarkanda area in Faridpur district, who has been sentenced to death yesterday by International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The tribunal tried Khokon, a local leader of anti-liberation party Jamaat-e-Islami in 1971 who later joined the BNP, in absentia as he remained fugitive during the trial and found evidence of Zahid’s active participation in the most heinous of crimes including mass killing, rape, looting, destroying properties and forcing Hindus to become Muslims. his war-time atrocious role, masterminded the indiscriminate killing of Bangalees during the 1971 Liberation War in Nagrakanda of Faridpur. The tribunal in its verdict said: “It is well proved that Zahid Hossain Khokon substantially contributed to and facilitated mass killing...followed by abduction, confinement, torture and other inhuman acts like plundering and arson.” The three-member tribunal said that Zahid’s offenses are “particularly shocking to the conscience of mankind.” “These were not isolated crimes, but a part of an organised and planned attack intended to commit the offences of crimes against humanity,” the verdict said. The state appointed Md Abdus Shukur Khan, as defence lawyer, who said he had never been able to contact Zahid or his close relatives. When Zahid fled the country, he was a senior vice-president of the Nagarkanda unit of BNP and the elected mayor of the Nagarkanda municipality.

Military slammed over land acquisitions n Tribune Report

The national executive director of international anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency International, yesterday came down hard on the military for what he called its actions against the public interest. Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), said the government had been coddling sheep in wolves’ clothing, in reference to its relationship with the armed forces. Using an expressive Bangla idiom that describes indulging an enemy as “raising a snake on milk and bananas,” Iftekharuzzaman warned against giving in to excessive demands by the military. “The armed forces, raised up to defend the people, were instead encroaching on people’s land to build up their own infrastructure like cantonments and housing schemes,” he said at a press conference on illegal encroachment of agricultural and forest land. Iftekharuzzaman said the country had given the military a “lamp of Aladdin,” which he clarified to mean unlimited licence to get whatever it desired. This should now be stopped, he said. The TIB executive director said the military was behaving like land grabbers. The press conference, organised  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1
