Having set the visitors a target of 314 runs in 68 overs, the Tigers cantered to a convincing win, bundling out Zimbabwe for 151 in 51.1 overs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series going into the third Test in Chittagong in four days’ time. In the process Bangladesh also leapfrogged Zimbabwe in the International Cricket Council’s Test rankings. The Tigers are now ninth in the rankings with Zimbabwe down at the bottom in the 10-team table. Shakib proves his mettle once again

It requires a tremendous amount of mental toughness and determination for a cricketer returning to international cricket after serving a three-month suspension. Not only did Shakib al Hasan have it in abundance, the premier Bangladesh all-rounder also created several milestones yesterday as Bangladesh strode to a 162-run win in the second Test against Zimbabwe at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna. Previously, former Pakistan captain Imran Khan and former England captain Sir Ian Botham were the only cricketers who achieved the feat of scoring a hundred and grabbing a 10-wicket haul in the same Test. Shakib became the third cricketer yesterday to claim the amazing record. Besides his all-round heroics, Shakib also became the second cricketer to pick up three five-wicket hauls and score a century in a Test series, joining former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram. Shakib’s 10-wicket haul was also the second time a Bangladesh bowler took 10 wickets in a Test, joining left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jr in the list. Protesting students attacked in DU Competitors go past Bangladesh in US n apparel market DU Correspondent

A group of students staging a protest on the Dhaka University campus was attacked yesterday allegedly by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, where one protester was injured. The incident took place when the protesters were participating in a human chain in front of the Raju Memorial around 11:20am to protest against the university authorities’ decision to bar applicants from taking the admission test twice. Abdul Aziz, the injured protester, who passed HSC examination this year from Dhaka College, was given primary treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The protesting students claimed that the attackers first asked them if they had DU ID cards. When they replied no, the other group chased them and locked in a clash with them, labelling them as activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-eIslami. Mohammad Hossain, one of the protesting students, told the Dhaka Tribune: “At first, police tried to bar us from staging the demonstration in the TSC area, but we did it. But later, this group of students came to us and asked

if we had university IDs. When we said we did not, they started beating us.” The protesting students also claimed that the attackers were activists of Chhatra League’s unit in the university’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. Salman Habib, member of Socialist Students Front’s DU unit who witnessed the incident, told the Dhaka Tribune that he had seen a Chhatra League activist named Jamal on the scene, but he was not sure if it was the Chhatra

League activists from Bangabandhu Hall who had launched the attack. When contacted, Darus Salam Shakil, president of Chhatra League’s Bangabandhu Hall unit, denied the allegation of being involved in the scuffle. “How could it be possible? I am currently in my home district Narsingdi attending a programme. I did not even know about the students’ demonstration this morning,” he told the Dhaka Tribune over phone.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 5
