Al-Badr commander Mir Quasem to die The key Jamaat financier led the group to commit crimes at Chittagong’s Daleem Hotel – a death factory n Julfikar Ali Manik The International Crimes Tribunal 2 yesterday awarded death sentence to notorious war criminal of 1971 Mir Quasem Ali, who has been playing a key role in recent years to foil the initiative of trying war crimes suspects by spending a large amount of money at home and abroad. The tribunal convicted Quasem for his notorious role as a commander of alBadr force (a para militia killing squad) in Chittagong where he had committed crimes against humanity during the War of Independence against the Pakistani occupation force. Quasem, the 62-year-old Jamaat-e-Islami leader, has been found guilty of murder, abduction, and of confining and torturing non-combatants and freedom fighters at an al-Badr camp set up at Daleem Hotel in Chittagong City. “The al-Badr camp at Daleem Hotel [in Andorkilla area] was a ‘criminal enterprise’ of which accused Mir Quasem Ali was a ‘boss,’” says the verdict pronounced by the three-member tribunal headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan. “Mir Quasem Ali had been in steering and guiding position of al-Badr force headquartered at Daleem Hotel which was a ‘death-factory’ indeed.” The tribunal found him guilty of systematic form of killing and torturing and also liable for the criminal role of civilian superior responsibility. Quasem instead of preventing the criminal acts by al-Badr men, on whom he had effective control, involved himself in the system and protracted brutality caused to the detainees at the camp, the verdict says. Quasem “was an indispensable cog in the ‘murdering machinery’ implanted at Daleem Hotel.” Fourteen charges were brought against the al-Badr leader by the prosecution in 2012 for committing crimes during the nine-month-long bloody war. War criminal Mir Quasem Ali yesterday dealt the death sentence handed down to him with overt arrogance, swearing “Shaitan” inside the courtroom, terming the verdict “directed” and showing the customary victory sign before leaving. He was brought to the International Crimes Tribunal in the capital from the Kashimpur jail in Gazipur around 9:15am. He could be seen reading newspapers inside the court lockup while waiting before the court kicked off proceedings. Police took him to the dock around 10:40am. Clad in a sky blue shirt, black trousers and black shoes, a stone ring in the middle finger of his right hand and a silver wrist watch on the other hand, the war criminal appeared to be in a really good mood. Right after he took his seat on the dock, he said something to his son Mir Ahmed Bin Quasem, who was part of the defence attorney team. Mir Quasem sat on his chair in the dock with his legs crossed and relaxed. A little later, he asked one of the policemen, standing beside him outside the dock, whether the judges had come to the court. The judges of the second International Crimes Tribunal, led by Justice Obaidul Hasan, came to the courtroom at 10:50am. Soon after, a courtroom attendant unknowingly came in front of the dock. Flipping his left hand, Mir Quasem drew the attention of a policemen and asked him to clear up the place so that he could see the judges.

Activities of al-Badr, the infamous killing squad of Jamaat-e-Islami that took the lives of many unarmed Bangalee civilians during the Liberation War in 1971, was against the spirit of Islam although they had committed atrocities in the name of the religion. While delivering verdict against Mir Quasem ali yesterday, the second International Crimes Tribunal said Jamaat had claimed that the stance of the party and its the then student wing Islami
Chhatra Sangha – now known as Shibir – was in solidarity with Pakistan and for preserving Islam. “But holy religion Islam does not allow such atrocious acts against humanity,” the verdict said, adding: “Rather, Islam teaches protecting humanity and human rights and dignity.” Tribunal Chairman Justice Obaidul Hassan and members Justice Md PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Blackout cause yet unknown, but grid upgrade likely n Aminur Rahman Rasel While Power Ministry officials are urging the public to await the findings of an eight-member probe committee into the national power grid failure’s causes, other top officials seem to have determined what were and were not the causes of the grid failure. The finance minister yesterday said: “It was the faulty transmission and distribution electricity lines that caused yesterday’s [Saturday] power shutdown, not the Indian power company that we import the power from.” Finance Minister AMA Muhith said the 10-hour blackout across the country was the result of faulty transmission and distribution lines, after the minister met Power
Secretary Monowar Islam at his secretariat office yesterday to discuss why the nationwide blackout had occurred. Meanwhile, State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid yesterday told journalists that an inquiry committee was investigating the causes of the national grid failure, and asked the public to postpone further speculation until the committee’s definitive report on the matter (See story on Back Page). But an expert attending the media conference at Bidyut Bhaban said the national power grid could collapse again if it was not upgraded. “We will appoint a consultant to review the power grid system as soon as possible,” Nasrul Hamid said at the press conference.
