MARADONA ACCUSES GIRLFRIEND OF THEFT AFTER VIDEO LEAKED

For Nizami, it’s death penalty Out of eight proven charges, Jamaat chief gets capital punishment in four and life term in others n Julfikar Ali Manik and Udisa Islam A war crimes tribunal has sentenced to death Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami, who masterminded the intellectual killings of 1971, for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in collaboration with the Pakistani occupation forces. The verdict in the case against Nizami, 71, yesterday removed all speculations and concerns regarding the unexpected time lag of about a year for the judgement. Nizami, the successor of Jamaat guru and the most infamous war criminal Ghulam Azam, has been found guilty of committing genocide by killing professionals and intellectuals, mass killing, rape, persecution and deportation, detention of unarmed civilians, and taking part in conspiracy of committing crimes in 1971. He was at the helm of a “death squad” named al-Badr that worked as an auxiliary force of the Pakistan Army to kill around 30 lakh Bangalis, rape more than 2.5 lakh women, force over 1 crore people to take refuge in India and displace scores of others internally, and widely destroy properties. Notorious force al-Badr was formed with the members of Islami Chhatra Sangha, then Jamaat’s student wing, to eliminate Bangali intellectuals in a planned way. In a judgement, a tribunal earlier termed Jamaat a “criminal organisation.”

A prosecution witness, who used to be a member of Islami Chhatra Sangha of which Nizami was the chief in 1971, has given a first hand account of the mastermind’s role that the death row war criminal had played during the war. Misbahur Rahman Chowdhury, now the chairman of a pro-Awami League faction of the Islami Oikya Jote, narrated in deposition before the International Crimes Tribunal how Nizami brained the formation of the al-Badr force that killed many intellectuals in 1971. “In 1962, I used to go to the same school as Sirajul Islam Motlib, who became the president of Moulvibazar unit of Chhatra Sangha [Jamaat-e-Islami’s the then student front, now known as Chhatra Shibir]. He asked me to join the Pakistan Shahin Fouz and I did. At the same time, I also became a member of the Chhatra Sangha,” Misbah said. “[Sometime] after March 25, 1971, Sirajul gave me a handwritten letter that addressed me as ‘brother Misbah.’ It read that the Chhatra Sangha had decided that all its members ought to join the al-Badr force by August 10...I was asked to meet Maj Fakhrul Islam, local

Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday called countrywide hartals (shut-down) for today, Sunday and Monday protesting the death sentence awarded to party Chief Matiur Rahman Nizami for committing crimes against humanity in the Liberation War in 1971. However, the Rangamati will remain out of the purview of the shut-down on the occasion of Kathin Chibar Dan, a religious festival of the Buddhist people in Rangamati. Within an hour of announcement of the verdict, Jamaat acting Ameer Maqbul Ahmed and acting secretary general Shafiqur Rahman issued a press release announcing the shut-downs.

The International Crimes Tribunal 1 yesterday observed that appointing a notorious war criminal like Motiur Rahman Nizami as minister was a “great blunder” and a “slap” on the faces of martyrs of the Liberation war. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia being a prime minister in her second fullterm tenure (2001-2006) appointed two leaders of anti-liberation party Jamaat-e-Islami as cabinet members. One of them Nizami, also ameer (chief) of Jamaat, was convicted on charges of war crimes yesterday. Another one was Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Muhammad Muja-

Tribunal 1 chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim, members justices Jahangir Hossain and Anwarul Haque yesterday in their verdict in Nizami’s case strongly criticised the acts of appointing war criminals as minister. The tribunal awarded Nizami death sentence for genocide during the War of Independence in 1971. The International Crimes Tribunal yesterday vehemently criticised Jamaat-e-Islami for abusing Islam in a bid to foil the birth of Bangladesh from occupational Pakistan in 1971 and for committing the most heinous crimes in the name of Islam. Tribunal 1 in its 204-page verdict in Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami’s case discussed elaborately how the party had misused Islam. The title of the section in the verdict was “Misuse of religion in politics by Jamaat-e-Islami during the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.” The three-member tribunal of Tri-

The second spell of shut-down will end at 6am on 4th November. Meanwhile, Jamaat’s key ally the BNP remained silent over the verdict on war criminal Matiur Rahman Nizami. The BNP, however, staged a demonstration across the country after the court awarded death sentence to BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for his wartime crimes in 1971.
