SC judge slams HC bench for bailing militants

MEET OPTIMUS PRIME DESHI

In July an HC bench granted bail to two Huji and JMB militants who confessed their crimes n Ahmed Zayeef An annoyed judge of the Supreme Court yesterday said two judges of a High Court bench should be put on trial for granting bail to two identified notorious Islamist militants in July. Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik made the unprecedented observation yesterday when the four-member Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, was hearing arguments of appeals against the bail orders of the High Court bench in two separate cases.

‘They have no commitment to the state or to the society’ The apex court eventually cancelled the HC bail orders and asked the militants to surrender. On July 8, an HC bench of Justice Borhanuddin and Justice KM Kamrul Kader granted bail to Abu Sayeed, a member of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jiahd-al Islami (Huji), who was accused in a case filed in connection with an attempt on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s life by exploding bombs in Sylhet in 2001. Abu Sayeed was in jail and confessed to his crime by giving a judicial statement. The case has been pending with a trial court in Sylhet. He was freed on the bail granted by the HC bench. The explosion took place at night on September 26, 2001 in Sylhet’s Fazil Chist

area when several youths were making bombs – hours ahead of a pre-poll rally of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina at the Alia Madrasa ground. The Fazil Chist area is 2km off the venue. Two of the bomb-makers were killed in the incident. The day after Sayeed had been granted bail, the same HC bench granted bail to another militant Mainuddin alias Moiz, a member of another banned outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). He was convicted and awarded 15 years in jail and his appeal against the trial court verdict had been pending with the HC. When Moiz was granted bail, he had already been in jail for five and a half years in a criminal case, but was freed thereafter. At the hearing on the appeals against the HC bail orders yesterday, Justice Shamsuddin expressed disappointment after learning the background of the cases against the militants. Justice Shamsuddin said: “They [the HC judges] have no commitment to the state or to the society. These judges themselves should be put on trial if they do not hesitate to grant bail to people who had attempted to kill the prime minister and other VIPs. “How can they remain totally oblivious to the fact that only the other day, some JMB militants were picked up in India’s West Bengal for trying to make explosive weapons to kill VVIPs in Bangladesh and create a reign of terror.” In the Sylhet blast case, three accused – Huji leader Mufti Abdul Hannan,  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

DB: Jihadists planned to set up base in Satkhira n Mohammad Jamil Khan

ConocoPhillips pulls out of deep-sea blocks 10, 11

Bangladesh Jihadi Group, the newly formed militant platform consisting of several banned outfits, had plans on setting up its main base at Satkhira as the district would provide an easy escape route to bordering India in case of an emergency. After carrying out acts of anarchy, the militants planned on using the Satkhira base as a hideout for the Jihadi Group – which included members from the JMB, Huji-B and Ansarullah Bangla Team. The site for the base had already been selected and preparation to set it up had been under way, said Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch of police. The DB official said the information was extracted during the remand session of four Bangladesh Jihadi Group militants – also members of the Harkat-ul Jihad Al Islami Bangladesh (Huji-B) – who were arrested on Saturday during separate raids in the capital and in Narayanganj. The arrestees are Maulana Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed alias Sajid, Md Umar alias Foyzul alias Roby, Md Nadim Ahmed alias Sumon and Md Salahuddin Ahmed – all aged between mid-20s

In the wake of a nagging primary energy crisis, US energy company ConocoPhillips, after six years of negotiation, has finally informed the government that it will not invest in drilling exploration wells in two deep-sea hydrocarbon blocks in the Bay of Bengal. ConocoPhillips officially informed state-run Petrobangla about its decision through a presentation at the latter’s Dhaka office yesterday, terming the drilling work as a risky investment because of what it saw as little business prospect. An official said ConocoPhillips would write to Petrobangla about the matter in a day or two. According to the existing contract, the company was supposed to inform the government by June 2014 about

what its plans were. Upon application, the government allowed the company six more months – that is up to December – to clarify its stance. The company, after having conducted 2D seismic surveys, said blocks 10 and 11 had aggregate recoverable gas reserves of two trillion cubit feet. “They do not think that investment will be commercially viable for them,” a director of Petrobangla told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday. The Dhaka Tribune Correspondent dispatched an e-mail to ConocoPhillips yesterday asking for details of the presentation that they had given to Petrobangla. In reply, ConocoPhillips Bangladesh’s Managing Director Thomas J Earley wrote: “The initial phase of the PSC will terminate on December 15,  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

On June 29, 2012, the World Bank cancelled its $1.2 billion funding for the bridge project citing that it had proofs of a corruption conspiracy involving Bangladeshi officials, executives of a Canadian firm and some individuals.
