The Detective Branch (DB) of police organised a conference yesterday, to inform the media of the arrest of four members of banned militant group Harkat-ul Jihad Al Islami Bangladesh (Huji-B) and the information derived from them. DB said Huji-B members Mawlana Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed alias Sajid, Md Umar alias Foyzul alias Roby, Md Nadim Ahmed alias Sumon and Md Salahuddin Ahmed – aged between mid 20s and 30s – were picked up early yesterday in separate drives in Uttara and Tikatuli in the capital and in Narayanganj. Rafiq is a teacher at the Foyzul Ulum

Huji-B had been planning massive attacks in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi when he was a sixth grader, bearing all his educational expenses since then. According to DB, the new platform was named Bangladesh Jihadi Group, comprising banned outfits Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Huji-B and the Ansarullah Bangla Team. Their primary plan was to stage some big attacks in the country to draw attention
militancy. “Detectives have traced two bomb making laboratories in Dhaka and Narayanganj and recovered a huge stash of of bomb-making substances. A detonator, which could be worth around Tk1.3 lakh, at least 55 different types of explosive substances and a Pakistan-made sub-machine gun were also recovered during the drives,” DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said at the media briefing. One laboratory is located in Rankin Street in Wari in the capital while the other in Fatullah of Narayanganj. Both have been set up about a few months back. DB had learned during the primary interrogation that Rafiq is the chief of Huji-B’s operations wing, Umar has
WHO: Ebola cases pass 10,000 mark n Agencies The number of cases in the Ebola outbreak has exceeded 10,000, with 4,922 deaths, the World Health Organization (WHO) says in its latest report. Only 27 of these cases have occurred outside the three worst-hit countries, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. Those three countries account for all but 10 of the fatalities.
The latest WHO situation report says Liberia remains the worst affected country, with 2,705 deaths Mali became the latest nation to record a death, a two-year-old girl. More than 40 people known to have come into contact with her have been quarantined, the BBC reported. The latest WHO situation report says that Liberia remains the worst affected country, with 2,705 deaths. Sierra Leone has had 1,281 fatalities and there have been 926 in Guinea. Nigeria has recorded eight deaths and there has been one in Mali and one in the United States. The WHO said the number of known cases was now 10,141 but the figure could be much higher, as many families were keeping
relatives at home rather than taking them to treatment centres. It said many of the centres were overcrowded. The latest report also shows no change in the number of cases and deaths in Liberia from the previous WHO report, 3 days ago. Eight countries have registered cases in the outbreak. In West Africa, Senegal and Nigeria have now been declared virus-free by the WHO. In the US, the governors of the states of New York and New Jersey have ordered a mandatory 21-day quarantine period for all doctors and other travellers who have had contact with Ebola victims in West Africa, according to the BBC. Anyone arriving from affected West African countries without having had confirmed contact with Ebola victims will be subject to monitoring by public health officials. The move follows the diagnosis of Dr Craig Spencer in New York who had been working in Guinea. The first person to be quarantined under the rules was a female health worker who arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday. The worker, who has not been identified, was the first to be quarantined under a policy announced on Friday making this mandatory for anyone arriving at a New York

Bay of Bengal have not worked out with US-based ConocoPhillips and Norway-based Statoil ASA, the government is now not quite sure about awarding three other blocks to these companies. A top official of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) said new deals were unlikely now as ConocoPhillips had been dilly-dallying in implementing the previous deals. In January, ConocoPhillips and Statoil jointly submitted bidding documents to explore oil and gas in three deep-sea blocks – 12, 16 and 21 to be specific – in the Bay. On February 19, state-run Petrobangla recommended that the EMRD signed production sharing contracts (PSCs) for the three new blocks upon approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. But there has been no

progress in this regard so far as the EMRD has taken no further steps. In June 2011, a PSC was signed between ConocoPhillips Bangladesh Exploration 10/11 Ltd and Petrobangla to explore offshore blocks 10 and 11, the country’s first ever deepwater hydrocarbon hunt. However, progress have been very slow. For two years since then, ConocoPhillips conducted 2D seismic surveys in blocks 10 and 11 but have not properly disclosed their findings. “ConcoPhillips seems to have lost interest after wasting much time. I guess they now want a higher price than what is mentioned in the initial contract for the previous two blocks [10 and 11]. We are keeping a close eye on their activities regarding the signing of deals for the three blocks,” Secretary of EMRD Md Abu Bakar Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune recently. “We are now working on a multiplan
