DB identifies militant leader behind sleeper cells n Mohammad Jamil Khan The Detective Branch of police has claimed that the prime suspect of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider’s murder was also one of the militant leaders who recently directed three JMB sleeper cells to kill two teachers in the capital. Investigators said Ansarullah Bangla Team leader Redwanul Azad Rana, who hailed from Feni’s Daganbhuiyan upazila and was a charge sheet enlisted accused in blogger Rajib’s murder case, was one of the “senior leaders” who masterminded the plan on attacking the Monipur High School teachers. “Rana, who instructed to kill blogger Rajib and attack blogger Asif Mohiuddin, also made the plan to attack two teachers of Monipur School”, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of DB police, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday. Inspector Nezam said they had already seized the documents, including the Barclays Bank’s £1.5 million cheque as per the court order. “Police investigation is almost complete. However, this type of case will be looked into by the Anti-Corruption Commission as per the law. So, we should forward the case to the ACC by a day or two,” he said. ‘Do not confuse Islam with terrorism’ Ministry moves to bar n war criminals’ clemency Sheikh Shahariar Zaman
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the international community not to confuse Islam with terrorism. She made this comment at the recently concluded Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) held in Milan on October 16-17. “She made a strong statement on terrorism in ASEM summit and said it is the enemy of development,” Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali quoted Hasina as saying at a press briefing at the ministry yesterday. Hasina urged the global community not to identify terrorists on the basis of religion or nation, he said. “The prime minister said terrorism can be curbed by a great deal if global arms trade can be controlled.” The soil of Bangladesh will not be allowed to use for terrorist activities against any country, Mahmood said quoting the prime minister. Terrorism has become a burning issue in recent times after the emergence of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) that has created anarchy in Syria and Iraq. The Law Ministry has taken an initiative to amend the necessary provisions for barring war criminals from seeking presidential clemency. Although it was not yet decided on how the bar would be introduced, Law Minister Anisul Haq yesterday said it might be imposed by amending the provision of the constitution or the ICT act. The minister made the comments to reporters at his office after a faction of Gonojagoron Moncho, led by Imran H Sarker, handed a three-point memorandum to the ministry. In the memorandum, the Moncho urged the ministry to take quick steps to allow the state to file a review petition against the appeal verdict of war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee, amend the constitution to disqualify war criminals from seeking presidential clemency, and amend the ICT act to try Jamaat-e-Islami.
