Detective Branch of police yesterday claimed they had solved the mysterious drowning death of O-level student Zubair Ahmed, saying they believed that Abuubaida Kadir killed the teenager while trying to sexually assault him. The DB announced its findings following the questioning in remand of a 17-year-old suspect, the only eyewitness to the murder. The alleged perpetrator of the crime remains a shadowy figure. He is known to have befriended many teenagers as a teacher, on the football pitch and in the swimming pool. When Kadir was first implicated in Zubair Ahmed’s death, many young people defended him on his Facebook page. But as details of his more unsavoury conversations with youngsters come to light, comments on his Facebook page have become increasingly outraged. Abuubaida Kadir, 46, a sometime football and swimming coach and language teacher with a penchant for befriending teenage boys, is believed to be an Algerian national, but even that is not certain. What is known is that he is

President Abdul Hamid yesterday terminated Posts and Telecommunications Minister Abdul Latif Siddique on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advice for his derogatory comments on Hajj and Tabligh Jamaat. Later in the evening of yesterday Latif was removed from Awami League presidium membership. His party primary membership was also suspended for his anti-Islamic comments and violating party charter. The cabinet division issued a gazette notification on Latif’s removal from the cabinet. However, the reason for his removal was not mentioned in the gazette. As per (c) of clause 1 of section 58 of the constitution, the appointment of Latif Siddique as minister was cancelled. According to clause 2 of 58 of the constitution, the prime minister advised the president to terminate the appointment of Latif Siddique. Briefing journalists, Cabinet Secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan yesterday said: “President Md Abdul Ha-

Zubair Ahmed, 17, an O-level student of the private coaching institute QED Academy, drowned in a shallow pond on October 4, at the sector 4 playground in Uttara in front of Kadir, his

swimming instructor, despite knowing how to swim. Police recovered his body with the help of fire service rescue and salvage divers on October 5 after Kadir told police the boy had drowned. The victim’s mother Dilara Begum filed a murder case with Uttara East police station and the DB was put in charge of the investigation, Shaikh Naz-

mul Alam, deputy commissioner of DB (north), said. He said the prime suspect, Abuubaida Kadir, was arrested on October 6 and a key suspect, ninth grade student, was arrested on October 10. Both are now in police remand, Nazmul said at a briefing at the media centre of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

mid has terminated Latif as a minister following the advice of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina”. Asked whether the reason for termination is mentioned, the cabinet secretary said the reason is not mentioned in the gazette, and it is not necessary. Unstoppable and untouchable Bodi A controversial career to say the least

AL MP Bodi lands in jail in graft case n Tribune Report n Adil Sakhawat Abdur Rahman Bodi, Awami League MP from Cox’s Bazar, was sent to jail yesterday after a Dhaka court had rejected his bail plea in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for amassing wealth beyond his known source of income. Bodi thus became the first ruling party lawmaker to land in prison during the current tenure of the Awami League. Yesterday, before seeking bail, he surrendered before the court of Dhaka Metropolitcan Magistrate Maruf Hossain, who rejected the plea and sent him to jail. On August 21, ACC Assistant Director Md Abdus Sobhan filed the case against Bodi with the capital’s Ramna police station. A few days later, the lawmaker issued a threat saying he would expose all secrets of the graft buster and its chairman M Bodiuzzaman if they tried to prove him corrupt. “Respected Mr Bodiuzzaman, the ACC chairman, your name is Bodi and my name is Bodi too. If one Bodi wants to drive out another Bodi, every secret will be disclosed,” he said at that time. When contacted, ACC lawyer Kabir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune

Many say he is unstoppable; he is hard to be moved from his stance even if he is wrong. Some poor people in his constituency even worship him because of the financial assistance they get from him. He is ruling Awami League lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi who was sent to jail yesterday in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for earning huge illegal wealth between 2008 and 2013. Not only possessing huge illegal wealth, many allegations are there against him in his constituency, Cox’s Bazar 4 that covers Teknaf and Ukhiya upazilas. Local people, especially the businessmen, claimed that they had

been held hostages by the influential Awami League MP and his family. Bodi joined politics in 1996 and tried to buy a ticket of the BNP for the controversial February 15 election. Failing to get one, he fought as an independent candidate but lost. He finally got nomination from the BNP for the June 12 election the same year but this time his nomination paper was cancelled. Soon he joined the Awami League. In 2000 when the BNP-Jamaat government was in power, he was selected an administrator of Teknaf municipality. But he was removed for engaging in conflict with a top Jamaat-e-Islami leader of the area. In 2003, he was elected the chairman of the municipality.

Authorities of four private banks have been violating the Bank Company Act, putting family members on the board of directors. According to the act, a boards cannot have more than two members of a single family.

Bodi was arrested during the military-backed caretaker government. He became a member of parliament for the first time in 2008 with Awami League ticket and then in the January 5 poll this year. He had at least 23 cases filed against him at different times. All the charges against him, except for in two-three cases, were withdrawn by the Home Ministry’s committee that dealt with “politically motivated cases.” He has no position in the local or central Awami League units. n Emran Hossain Sheikh Abdul Latif Siddique, the eldest brother of the “notorious” Siddique family of Tangail, has made more headlines over the years for his arrogance and controversial actions than for his political enterprises. Yesterday, post, telecommunications and information technology minister Latif was fired by President Abdul Hamid as a punishment for his widely criticised remarks about Hajj. Although he had been elected parliament member five times with Awami League ticket and given two important

portfolios over the last few years, his relation with the party had historically been bittersweet. His tenure as the jute and textiles minister of the last Awami League government has been marked by allegations of widespread irregularities. The Siddique family that practices a lot of power in Tangail, is often locally referred to as the “family of robbers.”
