said Saleh Mohammad Tanvir, superintendent of police in Tangail. The accident took place around 5:30am, creating a long tailback stretching from Chandra in Gazipur to the eastern side of Bangabandhu Bridge and causing sufferings to passengers, he said. Several thousand vehicles were seen waiting in queue to reach the destinations ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The tailback eased slightly around 3:45pm despite heavy traffic on the highway, said Zubaidul Alam, officer-incharge of Gorai highway police station. Due to heavy pressure of vehicles, Mawa ferry ghat, the gateway to 21 southern districts, witnessed jam. There was a two-kilometre tailback from Mawa to Sreenagar around 9am. HK protesters threaten to call off talks n Tribune Desk
PM: Not government, Latif in trouble
Leaders of pro-democracy protest groups in Hong Kong have threatened to call off talks with the government after demonstrators were involved in scuffles with angry opponents. The government must prevent "organised attacks" on supporters, they said. One group representing students has since said it would not take part in talks. Protesters angry at plans to vet poll candidates have occupied some areas. Violent scuffles broke out in one of Hong Kong's most famous and congested shopping districts on Friday, as hundreds of supporters of Chinese rule stormed tents and ripped down banners belonging to pro-democracy protesters, forcing many to retreat. As night fell and news of the confrontation spread, more protesters headed for the gritty, bustling district of Mong Kok, considered one of the most crowded places on Earth, to reinforce. Tens of thousands have taken to Hong Kong's streets in the past week to demand full democracy in the former
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said it was not the government but Latif Siddique himself was in trouble for his recent anti-Islamic comments. The premier also said nobody could make an issue out of it as the government had already taken measures against Latif. “Neither the government nor Awami League nor the country is in danger but the person who made the comment now has put himself in danger. He must pay price for the tirade,” Hasina said. Hasina, also the Awami League president, came up with the observation in response to a journalist's query during the question-answer session after her press conference on the outcomes of her recent visit to New York. The press conference was held at 4:50pm at her official residence Ganabhaban. Coming down heavily upon Latif Siddque she said his comments hurt the religious sentiment of people which was not acceptable to anyone. "I did not delay a single moment in taking action against minister Latif as soon as I heard about the matter," she

said. “The decision will be executed following all the procedures of the government and the party charter.” The premier said the procedure for his removal from the cabinet has already been initiated and it would be executed after the return of the president and cabinet secretary who are now performing Hajj. “I will do as I have said. I will not keep him in the cabinet and he will not be there. I have made the file ready and it will be done after the Eid,” he said. About Latif's ouster from the party she said a discussion is needed in the party’s central working committee to drop him from the party. Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Latif Siddique made “derogatory remarks” on Hajj and Tablig Jamaat at a view-exchange meeting with expatriates from Tangail in New York on September 28. The remarks made by Siddique, also presidium member of the Awami League, triggered widespread criticisms both at home and abroad, embarrassing the government. Sufferings begin at the beginning que Wadud, Abu Bakar n Mushfi Siddique and Mohammad Zakaria Before they could start the journey toward their village homes to spend the Eid vacation, Dhaka residents had to face several daunting tasks yesterday. They had to penetrate the traffic congestion that formed near the transport terminals, secure a place to sit or stand on their preferred mode of vehicle, remain patient for hours before
the vehicle arrived – all while clawing their way out of a myriad of touts and unscrupulous officials trying to sell tickets at higher rates. Although traffic volume on most of the capital's roads remained relatively light yesterday, Dhaka residents had to endure long tailbacks that formed on most roads leading to the terminals. “Normally, I face troubles getting a bus from Mirpur to Sadarghat; but I found a bus quite easy this year and thought the journey would be smooth.
However, I was proved wrong when I reached near the terminal. It took almost an hour to go from Banglabazar to Sadarghat,” said Mohammad Shahjahan, a garment worker who was going to his home in Bhola. With Eid-ul-Azha knocking at the door, all the bus, launch and train terminals in the city saw added rush of home-bound passengers yesterday.
