Over the past few days, a total of 15 bandits were killed in “gunfights” and mob beating with police. Of the 15, two were killed in a gun battle with RAB in Mrigamari area of the Sundarbans yesterday morning. They were identified as Zakir and Raju, and were members of the gang known as Awal Bahini. Lt Col Faridul Islam of RAB 8 said: “After receiving information from some

fisherman that a group of bandits were fleeing after robbery, a team of RAB conducted a raid in Mrigamari area.” “Sensing our presence, the bandits began shooting at RAB and the RAB also fired back, triggering a gunfight which continued for about 40 minutes. “After the gunfight, RAB searched the area and found two bodies bearing bullet wounds. Fishermen identified them as members of Awal Bahini,” Faridul added. RAB also recovered seven firearms,

150 rounds of bullets, a trawler, two solar panels, some lethal weapons and medicines from the scene. Earlier on Sunday, two robbers were beaten to death by local people of Paikgachha upazila in Khulna and 11 others were killed in a “gunfight” with police. Witnesses said members of Kashem Bahini demanded Tk50 lakh from Jitendra Dhali, a resident of Zirbunia village under Deluti union of Paikgachha, and threatened to abduct him in case of non-compliance.

At night, 13 robbers raided Jitendra’s house but did not find him there as he had escaped sensing their presence. Failing to get the money or abduct Jitendra, the criminals picked up Jitendra’s brother Proshanta Kumar Dhali, a college teacher. When they were about to leave the village, they found their trawler stuck in a shoal as the tide in the river was on the ebb. By the time they swam to Harinkhola area in Deluti union, the sun rose. They freed Proshanta as they

got apprehensive of running into trouble and concealed their arms in chambers of a sluice gate. The 13 were then divided into three separate groups and tried to flee, but were caught by villagers, who were looking for Proshanta and his abductors. They beat the robbers up, leaving two of them dead on the spot. The others were handed over to police. Based on information given by the bandits, police took them in Kalabogi  PAGE 2 COLUMN 5

Dhaka willing to assist in DB police aware of JMB regrouping in West Bengal Bardhaman blast probe n Mohammad Jamil Khan

n Sheikh Shahariar Zaman Dhaka has sought information from New Delhi on the blast incident of October 2 when two suspected radical Islamists were killed in the West Bengal district of Bardhaman. An official communication, popularly known as note verbale, was sent to India through its mission in Bangladesh on Tuesday seeking the information. “We sought information voluntarily from the Indian side about the incident on whether they need our assis-

Saradha scam was unearthed in which an Indian politician funded Jamaat-e-Islami tance, no matter if any Bangladeshi is involved or not,” State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam told journalists on Tuesday. The government earlier contacted with the Bangladesh mission to Delhi and the Indian mission to Dhaka but they did not have any information, he said. The explosion took place on October 2 at a house in Khagragarh in Bardhaman when two persons – Shakil Ahmed and Sovon Mondol – died on the spot. The Hindu reports that the four people arrested over the incident – Abdul

Hakim, Hashem Molla, Gulsana Bibi and Alima Bibi – were charged yesterday under different sections including for waging war against the Indian government. Shakeel had allegedly crossed over from Bangladesh in 2009. He had earlier rented a house in Beldanga in Murshidabad and only a few months ago rented the one in Khagragarh in Bardhaman, where the explosion occurred, the Indian newspaper reported. Dhaka asked for information because it was primarily assumed that one or more of those involved might be Bangladeshi citizens and they were identified as JMB members, Shahriar said. “We are committed that terrorism will not be tolerated. If the Indian government asks for any help, Bangladesh is ready to provide it,” he said. The junior minister also said the news regarding closing of Bangladesh-India border is false. “The border is open.” Asked if such terrorist activities were committed to destabilise Bangladesh, he said: “This issue is so sensitive that we do not want to make any comment for the sake of investigation.” In the last two months, Saradha scam was unearthed under which an Indian politician funded Jamaat-e-Islami’s Bangladesh chapter to create instability in Bangladesh. Concerns have developed in both India and Bangladesh over the reported regrouping of banned Islamist outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) mainly after two suspected militants of the group were killed on October 2 in a blast at a house in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district. The 32-year-old prime suspect, Shamim Ahmed alias Shakil alias Nayem alias Afzal Gazi, was a Bangladeshi. The other deceased is Shovon Mondol alias Shawpan alias Subhan, 22. According to primary reports in Indian media, they were killed while making bombs.

More chilling information came in the media lately which claims that the bombs were being made in the Indian territory to carry out subversive activities in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh authorities are yet to be informed “officially” by the Indian side about the latest development of the JMB operatives in West Bengal. But the investigators here are closely monitoring the developments. JMB founder Shayakh Abdur Rahman in a statement in 2006 mentioned about the West Bengal chapter terming it to be their 65th unit.
