Lace it, place it Two ways to revamp those old kameezes

| Khan N Moushumi While we wait in anticipation with Qurbani Eid just a few days away, most of us ladies have our fingers crossed for our tailor-made Eid suits, hoping it will turn out to be perfect with the right fit that’ll accentuate our curves. But those of you unfortunate souls out there, whose tailor couldn’t get it right or who got beaten at her own game by a random chick before she could get her hands on the dress you had your eyes on for days, don’t sweat it!

Here’s how you can revamp an old kameez right out of your closet with just a few, simple alterations.

Precious pearls You’ll need: • • • • • • • •

An old kameez A piece of sheer fabric Pearls Buttons Measuring tape Needle and thread Scissors Glue

Directions Pick a piece of sheer fabric that matches your kameez or you can choose one in a contrasting colour. Cut out four inches from your old kameez starting from the neckline going downwards, to replace the neckline with the sheer fabric. Leave a framework of your neckline so that you can place and stitch the sheer fabric in its place. On its borders, glue your pearls and stones, giving your kameez a whole new look like never before.

Laced loops You’ll need:

• An old kameez • Laces in different colours and patterns • Measuring tape • Needle and thread • Scissors

Directions

This one’s much simpler and a total game-changer. Pick wa few laces in matching or contrasting colours to revamp your plain old kameez. Wrap each of them around your bustline, making one layer after another and carefully sew them in place. And that’s it, you’re ready to strut in style in an all new empire cut kameez.

$970 million is what Amazon paid to beat Google in the purchasing of the game streaming site Twitch. You might be wondering what in the world is Twitch? Twitch is the essence of streaming games LIVE online for a worldwide audience. It’s fun to watch for a spectator, but equally exciting when you’re streaming your own gameplay to the rest of the world.

Get started by creating a free account on www.twitch.tv. However, you don’t have to sign up if you’re only viewing games played by others.

Streaming from the PS4 1. You’ll need your console, controller, a game to play, solid internet connection and a PS4 camera, which will allow viewers to see and hear you.

2. Login to your account, press the Share button on the controller when you start playing the game.

3. Select Broadcast Gameplay, then select “Go to the Twitch” website to login.

4. Finally, start broadcasting by pressing the Share button again and select Broadcast Gameplay, followed by selecting Twitch.

Streaming from Xbox One 1. You’ll need the same equipment as the PS4, but of course all by Xbox One, like the Kinect camera.

2. Sign in to your Microsoft account to download the free Twitch app in the Xbox Live Store.

3. After installing the app, open the app and click Broadcast, which will provide you a 6-digit code that you must enter at the Twitch website to activate.

4. Head to your Xbox’s privacy settings and set it to “Adult default.”

This can be found in the “Privacy & online safety” option. Also, check off “Allow broadcasts and Game DVR uploads.”

5. While playing the game, you simply say, “Xbox Broadcast.” You can also broadcast through the Twitch app.

To stop the stream say, “Xbox Stop Broadcast.”

While all the focus seems to be too much on the recent crowd of smartphones, we’ve taken our attention away from the other necessary gadgets in the modern world. You’ll see plenty of new laptops and desktops to be released in the coming months, like the new Dell Latitude 13 7000. More importantly, it possesses Intel’s new Core M processor.

It wouldn’t be wrong to get excited about the new line of machines that sport the Intel Core M. Dell’s 2-in1 computer has new features for any upgrades you’ve wanted from your recent laptop. We’ve always been aware of Dell’s reliability and performance, but that has slightly overshadowed their innovative intentions. This new model will have a 13.3-inch full-HD display that you’ll be able to detach from its keyboard.

Dell really wants to get ahead in the 13-inch mobility range of laptops, so what they are providing is a step in the right direction.

The company will make available a “business class” back-lit keyboard.

With either version in its class, attached to the display, will weigh no more than 3.7 pounds. Its maxed out model will have a solid state drive of 512GB and 8GB of RAM. But what seems to be the biggest attraction is its battery life and performance. Dell claims the tablet portion of the set will have a 30 watt-hour unit. In addition, if you choose to get the keyboard dock, it’ll have a 20 watt-hour battery of its own. Which means you’ll have a 50 watt-hours to drain that will last you the entire day. It’s a very bold

statement, challenging the likes of Apple and their arsenal of laptops.

Then again, we are talking about the everlasting Dell. Who, in the overall scheme of things, have never let their customers down.

Old school gamers will love this pick. You can now play classic video games on your phone with this Super Nintendo emulator for Android. Better yet, you can play multiplayer by using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Nothing new here, all of you should be aware of this app. It may be used on a regular basis, but it’s one of the best apps to keep you awake. Its layout, mimicked by HTC’s Sense, is a standout classic with modern day design. It’s your personal magazine for your phone.

Letterpress

For those word junkies out there, here’s something similar to Scrabble

or Boggle. It’s simple and quick to play with your friends and family.

You’ll be able to upgrade it for $0.99 but you’ll have plenty of fun on its free version.

Comfort is the best key for an enjoyable road trip

With the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Adha knocking at the door, certain fears are invoked in a lot of us relating to the hygiene condition on the roads.

| Tahsin Momin The holiday season is almost here. Meaning, it’s almost time to pack up the kids and set off on a road-trip to celebrate the holidays with friends and family.

We are right there with you, half-excited and half-dreading it. There are just so many things that you can’t control, like the traffic, the mood and especially the weather that you have to deal with during these long journeys. Luckily though, there is one aspect of the trip that you can control and that can radically change the whole outcome of your road trip; the car you pick for the trip.

There are a handful of vehicles out there that we believe are quite a lot better than others, due to roomy interiors, quiet rides, safety features and most importantly their reliability.

We’ve put together a list of three vehicles that are more than capable of hauling your family and days’ worth of belongings while taking their minds off the fact that there are still hours and miles left between them and some fun.

Suzuki APV

As the humble van grows increasingly complicated and well equipped, Suzuki still offers its barebones APV; a no-frills family vehicle, featuring simple mechanicals, voluminous load capacity and a barebones interior, all intended to get the job done without a fuss. The interior is a classic example; it greets both the driver and the passenger with sufficient room and excellent visibility. Its eight person seating layout makes it a perfect family outing vehicle. The APV’s 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine pumps out 98HP which is adequate for cruising along the highway on full capacity.

The redesigned Avanza is a comfortable family MPV. Toyota has taken major strides in improving the interior and making it more family friendly. The quality of the materials used feels better than before. There are seven seats to make use of. The last row of seats is however, better suited for kids rather than adults. On the other hand, the use of the third row hampers luggage space, although it can be folded flat for more luggage space if required. The 1.5-litre VVT-I engine is paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox, with 99HP at your disposal. The Avanza is as practical as it gets. Furthermore it is endorsed by Toyota’s reliability factor. The Toyota Avanza makes perfect sense; it transports seven people, it is economical, and it is quite pleasant to drive as well.

Toyota Noah

The Toyota Noah is quite an attractive MPV. You just can’t seem to ignore its impressive presence and style. It has a cool interior and good handling.

It can seat eight passengers with ease and comfort for long hauls.

Although for most, the main source of attraction on the Noah is the power.

The power-house on the Noah is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which produces 158HP. Nonetheless it is extremely spacious. You can put in a lot of cargo and can go on a long vacation without worrying about where and how to put your things in the boot. There is no doubt that it is the most expensive of the three we’ve picked but what remains unrivalled is its size. The Noah is the biggest of the three and also the most powerful one as well.

While we fulfil our religious duties by sacrificing the animals, somehow we compromise on our duty as citizens of the society.

Every year thousands of animals are sacrificed without proper precautions taken to clean the area. Post the ritual, only a small number of people clean up the blood and leftover from the animals. This leads to various problems.

Eid-ul-Adha has recently taken place during monsoon. The blood mixes with rain water. This ensures that the mixture floats in the area for a long period. The puddle is smelly and harbours a lot of insects like mosquitoes which in turn might lead to the breakout of diseases such as malaria.

Another common feature seen during this Eid is overflowing dustbins full of carcasses of the sacrificed animals. This attracts a lot of stray dogs, flies, etc. which badly affects the overall sanitation of the city.

Being a little careful and using bleaching powder over the blood will help reduce the smell to a great extent. Also the Municipality Committee should take extra measures to ensure that the dustbins and the area are cleaned up swiftly after the ritual is carried out.

I have been dating my 26-year-old boyfriend K for three years now.

For the past eight months he has been jobless as he quit his bank job after getting into a serious verbal argument with his manager.

Now that he has so much time job hunting, I’ve noticed that he tends to spend his free time looking for different ways to intoxicate himself. Drinking on the weekends has now become a weekday thing for him. Before he got into drugs, he used to get high twice or thrice a week but now he has begun trying other drugs. He keeps saying that it’s only for a few days, he just wants to enjoy the free time he has before another job gets him busy but I really think he has overdone it. He says there are no symptoms of addiction since he has no withdrawal, but I am anything but convinced as he spends all his money on drugs. How can I help him stop before it’s too late?

First and foremost we must address why he has chosen this path for himself.

Clearly, he needs some form of constant distraction to keep him busy, to help him block out the fact that he has just lost a job. Have you tried talking to him and asking him to stop? If he’s having problems stopping, let him know it’s an addiction that must be addressed right away. Remember that he has made drug abuse a habit. One that perhaps may not be a physical addiction for him since he claims not to have withdrawal symptoms. However, as he keeps spending money on drugs and alcohol and feels compelled to always find some kind of high, it is clear that there is a great level of psychological addiction here. Discuss his problem with him when he’s not under the influence and really ask him if he wants to carry this on to a dead end. Help him stop hanging out with friends who do the same. Find alternate activities that can keep you both engaged. Take up a new class or a course to help give his life purpose. If he doesn’t agree, I believe you should seek the help of his friends and family. If all else fails, seek counselling.

My daughter has always been a very easy-going, pleasant child. She does have her fits from time to time, but that is only natural. My son, on the other hand, is a constant headache for us. From the time he was 2, he used to hit other children, throw tantrums and refused to listen to us. Ever since I thought it was a phase that he’d get over but he hasn’t. His school teachers complain about him as well and I am so fed up of it. Every day he ruins every meal, every occasion and every outing with his behaviour. I am so tired of it. We’ve checked with doctors for autism but all the tests come back negative. What am I doing wrong?

You are definitely going through a lot, especially since it was relatively easier to raise your first child than your son.

Remember that a maternal instinct is a strong thing, so do not ignore your feelings. Persevere with your doctor and try asking more questions. On the side, also take a look at your son’s diet.

Processed food and sugar can really affect your child’s behaviour so even if his sister wasn’t sensitive to these, your son may be. Get your son involved in games or outdoor sports to help him get some exercise. Lastly, make sure you remain firm with him and give

Don’t be mistaken by the description and wrongfully assume that they’re limited to the male species. These tendencies are even more apparent in women than they are in men.

Post Eid clean up 101 A cleaning check list to help ward off mystery stains, rancid odours and more

| N Anita Amreen With Qurbani Eid on the horizon, we’ve already begun ticking off tasks on the to-do-list, stocking up on groceries and preparing ourselves for the onslaught of meat induced coma.

As excited as we are for our grand family get-togethers, there’s always the less exciting task of cleaning up.

This week we get some insider tips on how to unburden you from your post-celebration load by giving you a few easy ways to remove all traces of butchery and bring back the charm of your good ol’ home.

Paati

When chopping up meat, leave the paati on the ground floor. Using a large water pipe, rinse it down thoroughly, working the weaves.

Using any floor cleaning liquid, mix it with warm water and distilled white vinegar to really work through the layers of blood and grime. Rinse again, and wipe it down one last time before storing it on your roof to dry.

Buckets

You’ll be using a lot of these to carry the meat from one floor to the next, it’s inevitable that they will start to take on the rancid odour of dried blood. Compile all your buckets/plastic bowls in the kitchen and thoroughly wash them once with regular dish washing liquid, scrubbing any leftover stains. The smell is most likely to persist, so use a paste of lemon juice and baking soda and leave it on for an hour or two. Then scrub it off again and rinse.

Floors

Use half a cup of white vinegar with two cups of hot water and one teaspoon of cleaning liquid.

The vinegar has strong germ killing properties and will help disinfect the floors. Mix all the ingredients in a spray bottle and spray on surfaces that have stains, allowing it to stay for 10 minutes before wiping it off with a cloth. However, be careful not to use this mix on marble or granite floors, as the acidity of the vinegar may eat away at the floor. Use warm water and PH neutral cleaner for marble, ceramic and stone floors.

Use the same floor liquid cleaner mentioned earlier to wipe the floors clean. For

countertops, squeeze the juice of half a lemon and scrub over stains.

Let the juice stay on until the stain disappears, then rinse with water.

You can also disinfect your cutting board using the same technique.

Fridge

As the hub of your kitchen, your fridge will need to be squeaky clean and empty before you begin packing and storing your raw meat. To help clean your fridge, take some time in hand and start by defrosting it.

Remove all shelves and then use a warm cloth to wipe away crystallised stains. Place baking soda and a bit of coffee on a tray and use it to work through the intricate spaces. Finally wipe it down with a clean warm cloth. Repeat the same process for the shelves. The coffee scent may stay for a while, but that will fade away with any other bad odour plaguing your fridge.

Once you have cleaned up your home, throw open the windows and make room for some cross ventilation. To make a natural air freshener, boil lemon or orange peels in water. You may also boil cinnamon sticks, leave a bowl of white vinegar in the rooms or put a few drops of vanilla essence on light bulbs.

Stains

Blood stains in particular can be quite difficult to wash off after 24 hours. Try getting on the stains before they set by pouring white vinegar on the spot. Since it’s Qurbani Eid, it’s advisable to keep a small spray bottle of white vinegar handy. Once you’ve sprayed a spot, let it soak for 10 minutes and then blotch with a cloth, repeating if required. Wash immediately afterwards. If you’ve stained furniture, make a paste of water and talcum powder and apply it instantly to the spot. Once it dries, brush it off.

When the season starts changing from fall to winter, some may witness the symptoms of SAD. Some also start getting depressed at the end of winter or in the beginning of summer. Often confused with the feeling of “winter blues,” SAD should be treated by making a continued effort to keep ourselves motivated, constantly working towards a state of mental well-being.

Symptoms

There are no specific reasons that causes SAD but some theories suggest that sunlight effects the brain’s chemicals and our hormones, although it’s not clear how exactly it plays out. However, studies show

He also cofounded ROOT Marketing Services, Printex Limited, Giant Marketing, Zakat Connect and is an investor in Startup Dhaka. Being passionate about the food sector, he is also a shareholder in Timeout, WOW Burger and Crepe ‘o Momo.

Riyad is one of the organisers of Google Business Groups (GBG), Dhaka, a fast growing non-profit community under the Google Outreach Program. Highly involved in the Bangladeshi start-up scene, he regularly speaks at various conferences and mentors young start-ups.

He also chairs the Youth Committee of TiE Dhaka.

What were some of the reasons that drove you to take this initiative?

After completing my marketing degree from the UK in 2005, I returned to Bangladesh in 2007 and started a market communication firm. I had been focused on that for about five years. But the marketing ecosystem started to change rapidly. From a one way push communication, brands needed their target audience to speak and interact with them.

People started to consume media from their devices. I wanted to be at the forefront of this amazing revolution. I started researching and learning about the ever changing landscape of digital media. My friend Bickey Russell, who at that time was working for Google, gave me a lot of tips and

advice and was a great inspiration.

So at the beginning of 2013, along with my co-founders, we started Magnito Digital, one of the first full service digital marketing agencies of Bangladesh.

What is it that you are trying to achieve with Magnito Digital?

By marrying technology with our knowledge and passion for brands, we want to revolutionise the Bangladeshi advertising industry. We want to empower small businesses like a tea stall to tell its story and offer experiences to its consumers through digital media. As an individual, how much time do you spend on social media yourself?

Good question! That’s probably my wife’s only complaint about me.

Online shopping is huge right now. Do you see it staying where it is, expanding to something even bigger or go on a completely different path?

E-commerce has already started to grow in Bangladesh and with further development in banking policies surrounding online payment, it will continue to grow more. Assuming that e-commerce will be really big within the next couple of years, some will win and some will lose out. The ones to

embrace good user experience will be the winners.

How close do you feel to this project? How much of Magnito is Riyad?

At the moment, my full focus is on Magnito Digital, which makes it a very exciting time of my career.

I am very lucky for being able to work with an amazing team with a shared vision. I honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Any advice for people struggling with start-up companies?

Do what you love doing, stay true to yourself and always be ethical and sincere. It’s important to think of the big picture.

I’ve seen plenty of men on TV, magazines, online, etc. wearing their suit jackets and shirts with jeans.

I’ve tried it myself but it seems to always come out a little sloppy.

Could you give me some tips on how to put it all together?

Remember the number one rule about menswear - your clothes should be fitted. The reason you might look sloppy is because of how your clothes fit. You have to remember you can’t just wear any pair of jeans or jacket. They have to be dressy jeans that are either slim-fit or regular straight-fit. It’s recommended your dress shirts are tailored or simply slim-fit off the rack. The entire outfit has to look like it’s your everyday uniform.

This cannot be accomplished if your clothes don’t fit properly. And if you want a more relaxed/casual look, lose the tie and untuck your shirt. But never forget, you cannot compromise with the fitting.

Staying neutral The basics are the perfect way to settle into autumn

| Mahmood Hossain Here’s a nice little intro to this season’s neutral, key fashion statements. We’re talking about the navy blue, light grey, and camel. These basics allow you to sport, what may seem like, a uniform look. While the spring/summer was all about mixing vibrant colours, autumn’s code of conduct keeps things on a simple slate.

The darker blue

Navy can be a year-round colour, but the heavier layers for the cooler months can give a smooth touch to your overall style. A simple zip-up navy jacket goes great with a similar shaded T-shirt and jeans. Round that up with a pair of navy sneakers, either in suede or canvas, to keep the entire colour scheme in check.

The wonderful thing about this look, and the ones to follow, is that different fabrics will present different shades of navy blue.

Middle of black and white

Light grey can actually be soothing to the eyes. It may not standout like other colours but there is a slight sophistication in a casual manner. You can, however, make the light grey pop by contrasting with darker greys or in complete black. The key items in this colour are sweaters and trousers, in both casual and formal.

Not brown, but close enough

Camel coloured trousers, shoes, and accessories are easier to pull off than you think. Similar to the grey, you’re able to match camel with lighter shades of brown. While shearing coats and slim-fit corduroy trousers may be ideal, they have to be worn carefully. You’re better off aiming for accessories like wristwatches, or even better start off with classic camel lace-ups.

How about not keeping in contact? That’s a good one for starters. But we have to applaud you for trying to remain friends. And that’s something you should always keep in mind. Whatever history you have with her, never make the gift too personal that may give any sign of intimacy. Buy her something that you would get for any other friend.

No sentimental gifts, no matter how nice of a guy you are. If you do, you can see it in two different ways. I just splurged on a fancy set of make-up brushes. How often should I clean them? What is the best method?

It’s really important to clean your brushes to ward off bacteria and avoid pesky breakouts. While there are a number of brush cleansers available abroad, you can use a DIY method. Mix a gentle shampoo with an equal amount of water in a glass. Steer clear of extra emollient, creamy formulas. Go with a clear, clarifying formula. Dip the brushes in this mixture for a couple of minutes. The next step is to rinse them out under cool water. Reshape your brushes and lay them flat to dry on a clean towel. They are good to go when completely dried. Repeat this process once a week for optimum results.

I have recently been breaking out into spots and one of my friends recommended one of those apricot scrubs available everywhere. Why isn’t it helping?

No! Just no! The scrubbing agent in most of those apricot exfoliants are actually large kernels of synthetic material. They are way too abrasive for skin that is broken out and sensitive. There is no such cure as “scrubbing” off those blemishes.

This will only aggravate your skin more. The only time it’s okay to scrub blemishes is when they are almost gone and you want to get rid of the dry, dead skin. What you should do instead is target your problem areas with a medicated lotion and be patient. If your problem seems to be a persistent one, visit a dermatologist who can prescribe a potion that will both dry out your zits and slough off dead skin.

Beef curry This dark, seductive, irresistible allure is guaranteed to make you drool

When was the last time you held your precious babies in your lap under the far away stars and whispered in their ears that the lights in the sky are holes in the floor of heaven? When was the last time you were actually awake in a city full of sleepwalkers and walked around hand in hand?

When was the last time, in a high heated noon, after the rain, you watched the rainbow rising from the horizon? When was the last time you were deliriously happy to see and touch that burst of colours from the deep purple flowers on the sideway?

When was the last time you made some unspeakably easy but beautiful food and shared it with your next door neighbour?

Beef curry

The earthy scent of the beef curry will intoxicate your senses. Teamed with lentil rice, this is the first thing you’d want to relish on the day of resurrection.

Ingredients:

• 2lb boneless beef, cut into small chunks • 1 medium sized onion, pasted • 2tbsp garlic paste • 1tbsp ginger paste (for a pop of invisible depth of flavours that takes you by surprise) • ½tsp turmeric powder • ½tsp red chilli powder • 4 cardamoms • 1 stick of cinnamon • 4 cloves • 2 bay leaves • 2tbsp yoghurt/curd • ½tbsp toasted cumin seeds • 1tsp salt • 2tbsp olive/vegetable oil/ghee • 1 large potato (optional)

Preparation:

Mix everything together in a large pan and stir on medium heat for 15 minutes. Put the lid on. Cook for 1 hour or until the meat surrenders into tender, juicy chunks.

then you pour 1 cup of warm water at this point.

Add potato chunks. Let the chunks swirl across the pot absorbing the gravy. Put the lid back on and cook for another 20 minutes.

Spicy beef curry, beef bhuna, beef kebabs – almost every beef delicacy will be on the menu this Eid. As much as we love to drown ourselves in the beef madness, there will come a point where you give up on the beef love and look for a separate distraction. That’s when this succulent mutton recipe comes in – hot, spicy and absolutely delicious, this mutton chilli onion recipe packs enough punch to knock you off your beef and even chicken bandwagon. If you’re in the mood for some love, this recipe is a must try.

Ingredients:

Sliced mutton 275gm Brown sugar 5gm Soy sauce 36ml Chopped onion 30gm Chopped garlic 10gm Chopped ginger 15 gm Sliced onion 50gm Red chilli - cut in small pieces 5 pieces Green capsicum 20gm Fresh spring onion 10gm Vegetable oil 50ml Chicken stock 120gm Chilli flakes 2gm Eggs 2 Corn flour ½ cup Salt to taste

Preparation:

Slice the mutton chunks as thinly as you can. Marinate the mutton with salt, egg, corn flour and a dash of oil for an hour. Once done, heat oil in a pan and fry the sliced mutton, stirring as you go. Set it aside and then heat oil in a clean pan. Add the chopped ginger, garlic, onions and sliced chillies and add the fried sliced mutton to them. Stir all the ingredients together, adding soy sauce and brown sugar to the mixture. Add fresh chillies (if you’re using them) or chilli flakes and stir fry for 1 to 2 minutes. As you keep stirring, add 1/5 of the stock, bit by bit, just enough to keep the ingredients frying. Continue stir frying and then add the green capsicum and the sliced onions. Cook till the vegetables have softened, but make sure they don’t lose that crisp freshness. 20 | news An Ode to Tangail Weaves Jointly organised by the Fashion Design Council of Bangladesh and Bengal Art Lounge, “An Ode to Tangail Weaves” exhibits the metamorphosis of Tangail saris.

Launched on October 1, the show transcends time and depicts the transformation of taant over the last few decades. In recent years, Tangail taant industry has experienced encouraging growth. The designers of FDCB have worked to create ensembles with Tangail handloom unveiling the potential of taant fabric.

Continuing to disprove all the popular notion about how unsocial and machine-like the engineers are, Photographic Society of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology is once again all set to present its newest endeavour to the photoenthusiasts at home and abroad.

Going under the title “Voyage of Visuals: Portraiture,” the exhibition is going on live at the Drik Gallery from October 11 to 13 with 60 stunning portraits and eight exciting photo series from 56 gifted photographers around the country.

This is the first time this club of youngsters is organising an exhibition which is open to all Bangladeshis. The idea was to assemble the brilliant and ever-growing group of endowed visionary Bangladeshi photographers and collect their finest works on a single genre, portraiture for this year.
