Kidney trade haunts Kalai upazila again ‘Those involved in the trade recruiting new members to widen their network’ bail and returned to the illicit act n Our Correspondent, Joypurhat tained when vigilance gradually became lax. Middlemen in at least 10 villages of Kalai upazila are back in the illegal kidney trade as they promise villagers a good amount of money in exchange for kidneys, thanks to the poor vigilance of the local administration. Villagers cajoled into selling kidneys undergo kidney transplantation at Columbia Asia Hospital and Medica Hospital in India’s Bangalore, and they get Tk2-3 lakh. The middlemen, however, are pocketing a whopping sum in the process.

Gang members tell people that selling a single kidney involves no potential health hazard Ripon of Bairagihat and Aminul Islam of Durgapur recently returned from Columbia Asia Hospital without selling their kidneys as a bargain did not work out. The middlemen have designated areas where they work but they also maintain contact with other members of the network. The illegal trade stopped for a while in Kalai upazila when reports in August 2011 said more than 50 people living in 20 villages of the upazila had sold theirs. The local administration took a number of steps, including arresting the middlemen, at the time but they ob-

Four cases have so far been filed with Kalai police station in this connection, with three now under trial. The other suit was disposed of by the police at the police station. Local middlemen Abdus Sattar, Abdul Mannan, Tareq Azam in Dhaka, Saiful Islam, Mahmudur Rahman Sujon and Nafiz Mahmud were named accused in the three cases. Villagers said those involved in the trade are recruiting new members to widen their networks. Tempted by the sweet talk of the middlemen, at least 39 men and women in the upazila are believed to have sold kidneys in the last six months. Of them, 21 returned home but the rest 18 have not. There have been allegations that the middlemen are appointing subordinates, especially locally, to work for them in different areas. They have already had their kidneys sold, which makes it a piece of cake for them to dupe others. One of the widely used persuasion technique is telling people that selling a single kidney involves no potential health hazard. “I was deep in debt and when Tajul came up to me and proposed Tk4 lakh, I jumped at it. However, I only got Tk1.5 lakh after the transplantation while the remaining amount went to the  PAGE 2 COLUMN 6

Khaleda: Initiate talks or quit Al-Masum Molla, n Mohammad from Jamalpur

Twenty-party alliance chief Khaleda Zia yesterday again said Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina must sit with the BNP to discuss how an inclusive, free and fair election can be arranged. At the same time, the BNP chairperson threatened to oust the “illegal, corrupt and killer government” through people’s movement after the Eid festivals to realise the demand. Claiming that the Awami League had completely failed to run the country, Khaleda also called upon Hasina to quit power.

“There is no use of sitting with socalled parties and thugs. You [PM] must engage in dialogue with the BNP which is the largest and most popular party of Bangladesh,” Khaleda told a mass rally, organised by the 20-party alliance at Jamalpur Zilla School ground, in the afternoon. Defending her stance against the January 5 poll, the three-time former prime minister said: “We did not make any mistake rather we have proved that the people are not with them [ruling government]. Country’s 95% people are with us as they did not go to cast their votes.” Before the election, Hasina was positive about holding talks with the

BNP and other parties over a possible mid-term poll, but after the election, she continues to deny holding any poll before 2019 saying that the people have accepted the January 5 election. In an unprecedented move, Hasina in October last year even phoned Khaleda inviting her to a dialogue. But the BNP chief turned it down on hartal grounds, and the window for discussion has been shut since then. Khaleda alleged that a deep-rooted conspiracy was on to split the BNP-led alliance. “The government will gain nothing by holding dialogues with Jodu, Modhu, thieves and dishonest people [leaders in the BNP-led alliance].”

Police conjectured that a professional group of burglars rented a room adjacent to the bank office and robbed it. They also suspect the involvement of some locals in the burglary. Two night guards, Faruk Hossain and Helal Uddin, were held by police for interrogation. The room rented by the burglars is in the building adjacent to Shajahan Man-

sion, the building in which the Brac bank’s branch is accommodated. Rasel Khan, receptionist of Modern Homeo Centre said some people rented the room on September 11 to start a non-government organisation (NGO). Two people frequented the so called NGO office, but nobody knew where they were from. Our Joypurhat corespondent could not contact KM Layek Ali, the owner of the building in which the burglars rented rooms, as his mobile phone was

Hasina: No dialogue, no mid-term poll now n UNB

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has brushed aside the possibility of any midterm election and holding any dialogue with the BNP claiming that the Awami League-led government is performing well after the January 5 election. “Why there should be a midterm election? What are the problems [created] for which we should go for a midterm election? For whom the midterm election needs to be arranged? Is it needed to put in power the party that was created by power usurper Ziaur
