Jamaat lobbying against war crimes trials again
‘All AL leaders except Sheikh Hasina can be bought’ n Kamran Reza Chowdhury
Mir Kashem’s brother Mir Masum and Nizami’s son Naqibur are pulling the strings in US n Rafe Sadnan Adel Jamaat-e-Islami, many of whose top leaders have been convicted for 1971 crimes, has once again launched a campaign to influence US policymakers against the ongoing trial of war crimes in Bangladesh, spending thousands of dollars. In March and April this year, two pro-Jamaat organisations based in the USA hired two lobbyist firms to work for engaging the US Congress in condemning the actions of the war crimes tribunal and raise public awareness among the US public. One of the organisations is called the “Organisation for Peace and Justice.” According to a news report aired by Bangladeshi private broadcaster
Maasranga Television last week, the Organisation for Peace and Justice is located at 252A Lake Avenue in Staten Island of New York. The Massranga reporter found that in the same building there are two other firms named Rose Valley and Diganta Media USA. Registration papers show that both these firms are owned by Mir Masum Ali, brother of Jamaat leader and war crimes accused Mir Kashem Ali. From the website of the US justice department’s Foreign Agents Registration Act, the Dhaka Tribune has obtained the registration statements of Cassidy & Associates, a top US lobbying firm, who has been hired by the Organisation for Peace and Justice. The registration details of Cassidy
with Organisation for Peace and Justice Inc can be accessed at http://www.fara. gov/docs/6214-Exhibit-AB-20140415-2. pdf. The document reads that Cassidy will “engage members of the US Congress to support a congressional resolution condemning the actions of the ICT [International Crimes Tribunal] and to use best efforts to include anti-ICT legislative language” in the legislative bodies. Another document available on the website says “sympathisers of the Jamaat-e-Islami political party are directors/employees of the Organisation for Peace and Justice Inc and the mission of the principal benefits the party and its members in Bangladesh.” PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

14 Huji men freshly indicted after revising charges n Md Sanaul Islam Tipu A Dhaka court has freshly indicted chief of banned Islamist outfit Huji Mufti Abdul Hannan and 13 others in the explosives case filed over blasting bombs during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul in 2001. Judge Shahed Nur Uddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 reframed the charges yesterday following a prosecution petition. In the petition filed on August 7, special public prosecutor Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan mentioned that the Huji men had earlier been charged in the case under a wrong section of law. After the framing of charges under sections 3 and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act, the court has fixed September 21 for further trial of the case. So far, seven witnesses have testified in the case. The court said on September 21 it would decide on whether to recall the seven witnesses or continue deposition of the other witnesses. Mamata-Bangladesh envoy meeting today n Tribune Report West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will meet Abida Islam, deputy high commissioner of Bangladesh in Kolkata, Indian daily newspaper The Hindu reported yesterday. Mamata is going to meet Bangladesh deputy high commissioner amid allegations against her party Trinamool Congress MP of funnelling money from the Saradha chit fund to the Jamaat-e-Islami-Bangladesh. The Hindu said the chief minister is scheduled to meet Abida Islam at the state secretariat at 4pm today. An official of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission, however, said the meeting was not related to the ongoing probe into the Saradha Chit Fund scam. The official, however, said as Abida Islam was leaving the country (India) shortly they had asked for an appointment with the chief minister. “It is a routine courtesy call,” the official said.
The meeting, however, is significant, in the background of several intelligence and media reports that have indicated that Trinamool Congress MP Ahmed Hassan Imran had given money to the Jamaat-e-Islami to destabilise the Awami League government. Media reports have also indicated that the money was acquired by Imran from Sudipta Sen, CMD of the Saradha Group. Imran, who was earlier interrogated by the CBI, for selling his newspaper to Sudipta Sen at an exorbitant amount, denied any involvement in the scam. “The amount is properly accounted for. No money was handed over to anyone in Bangladesh and it was duly explained to the CBI,” Imran told reporters after he was interrogated by the investigating agency. Meanwhile, Imran, also one of the founder members of Students’ Islamic Movement of India, an outfit that has been banned since 2001, on Sunday told The Telegraph: “I left Simi in 1984 and I have nothing to do with the Jamaat.” l

Rawshan overpowers HM Ershad
France will host Switzerland in the Davis Cup final in November after Roger Federer gave the Swiss the winning point against Italy in Geneva on Sunday.
JaPa Chairman HM Ershad has apparently been put to rout in power tussle with his wife Rawshon Ershad who was able to whip up support of at least 27 of the total 40 lawmakers at the parliamentary party meeting yesterday. Opposing the former general’s view of stepping down from the cabinet the Jatiya Party (JaPa) parliamentary party meeting decided that it would stay on with the cabinet until the forum reversed this decision, State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque said. The parliamentary party meeting
also decided to recommend HM Ershad for reinstatement of Moshiur Rahman Ranga and Tajul Islam Chowdhury in the party presidium. Earlier, Ershad relieved State Minister for Local Government Moshiur Rahman Ranga and Opposition Chief Whip Tajul Islam Chowdhury for siding with Rawshon. The parliamentary party upheld the decision of Rawshon Ershad to nominate Kazi Feroz Rashid, whom Ershad also removed from the president of Dhaka city unit of JaPa for siding with his wife, as the deputy leader of the opposition. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday made a frustrating comment about her party, saying all Awami League leaders, except her, can be bought. She made the comment while leaving parliament after yesterday’s sitting which ended around 8:45pm. The House adopted the constitutional amendment bill 2014 that would make the judiciary accountable to the legislature. Just after the deputy speaker Fazle Miah adjourned the House until Monday, Hasan Mahmud, Dabirul Islam, Abdul Matin Khasru and Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu approached the prime minister and raised the issue of the judges’ removal bill. Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Law Minister Anisul Huq and Chief Whip ASM Feroz also joined them. They referred to the opposition of the 16th constitutional amendment bill by Dr Kamal Hossain and Barrister Amir-Ul-Islam, an Awami Leaguebacked lawyer. The MPs were trying to speculate whether the bill could trigger any difficulty for the party and the government. “All Awami League leaders can be bought except Sheikh Hasina and that is the problem,” the premier told them and left the House.
Hasina shouts at whip for breaking rule
Around 10 minutes before, the prime minister yelled at Whip Atiur Rahman Atik who sat in the chair of Railway Minister Mazibul Haque violating the Rules of Procedure. She also ordered Atik to take his own seat in the third row. “Why do you always sit here? Go to your seat,” Hasina told the whip and he immediately returned to his seat. The Rules of Procedure strictly prohibits the parliamentarians from taking any other seat except their own while PAGE 2 COLUMN 6
