BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed in his new book said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was only concerned about the release of her two sons during the emergency period in 2007-08. At that time she was very much a mother rather than a political leader, said the book, Bangladesh Emergency and the Aftermath (2007-2008). During the emergency period Khaleda Zia was under pressure from the army-backed caretaker government to leave the country but she did not agree to sit across the table without the release of her two sons –Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko. She even did not go abroad for treatment because of her concern for her two sons. Senior Lawyer Moudud’s book was inaugurated in the Supreme Court Bar Association Auditorium in the city yesterday. In the book-launching ceremony academics, politicians and media professionals were present. Moudud wrote the book while he was in jail during the army-backed caretaker government in 2007-2008. Emajuddin Ahmed, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, said: “The caretaker government was a completely military takeover and the then chief of army staff Moin Uddin Ahmed was the key policymaker.”

ACC starts probing allegations against officials and employees n Abu Hayat Mahmud Public funds continue to be wasted every year as irregularities and corruption had infested the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and a large number of its employees over the years. For a long time, a section of unscrupulous DSCC officials have been showing a large portion of their annual budget as expenditures for various development projects on papers, such as renovation or improving roads and traffic systems, surface drains, playgrounds and open spaces, markets, staff accommodations, social welfare and others, although in reality most of such projects were never taken care of, sources said. Most of these irregularities take place during allocation of city corporation-owned free spaces, footpaths, market positions (shops), and tenders. Back in July 2013, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) also launched a probe into the allegations of irregularities and corruptions in development projects and other sectors of DSCC. An official of the city corporation,

seeking anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune that most of the officials and employees of DSCC were employed by the then Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) and the new high officials have been appointed on deputation for a certain period. “That is why the high officials have been acting on a whim to operate the city corporation along with different groups of unscrupulous permanent officials of the corporation. “Many of the high officials in the city corporation are also involved with corruption. After a certain period, these officials get transferred to other government departments or divisions. For this reason, city dwellers are not getting adequate service from the corporation.” the official alleged. Every year at the corporation’s budget announcement programme, DSCC high-ups claim of undertaking huge development works and what services they provided using crores in taka from its budget in the previous fiscal year. However, city people have not been  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1
