Bangladesh Bank has identified 10 accounts of private banks that were used for transacting large amounts of money suspected to have been used for financing militant activities, including purchase of weapons and organising subversive activities. The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) at Bangladesh Bank recently sent a 90-page report on its findings to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police for investigating the account details and bringing the perpetrators to book. The DMP later passed on the report to the Detective Branch of police for further investigation. Sheikh Nazmul Alam, deputy commissioner of the DB police, said procedures were under way to take action against those who were responsible for financing militant activities. “We have started our activities to

Report: India’s Saradha Group funded Jamaat violence n Tribune Report The Saradha Group of India extended considerable financial assistance to Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh to help the party create unrest when Sheikh Hasina’s government began trying its top leaders for war crimes, Kolkata’s Anandabazar Patrika reported yesterday quoting a Bangladeshi intelligence report. The intelligence report accused Ahmed Hassan Imran, a parliamentarian of Trinamool Congress, of playing the key role in sending the money to Jamaat, and added that the Bangladeshi authorities had officially complained to the Indian government about this. A whopping sum of money, the intelligence report said, had reached Jamaat and its associate bodies through Imran in 2012-13 and a big portion of it came from Saradha. Although Imran denied the charge, saying he had no connection with Jamaat, the Indian intelligence report also largely supported the allegation. Apart from money, Imran had a hand in sending several shipments of firearms and explosives to Jamaat, the Bangladeshi intelligence report claimed.

the culprits will be arrested soon,” Nazmul told the Dhaka Tribune over phone yesterday. According to the BFIU report, the 10 accounts were used to deposit money to account number 34015379 of Al-Arafah Islami Bank’s Dhanmondi branch that belonged to Jasim Uddin, the chief of the banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team. The money was reportedly deposited to finance the militants’ meetings, seminars, and for helping to carry out violence. Of the 10 accounts identified by the BFIU, the single largest amount deposited to Ansarullah chief Jasim’s account was Tk13.5 lakh from a Dutch-Bangla Bank account belonging to Junnun Sikdar, a resident of Dhaka’s Jhigatola. On September 19, 2010, an amount of Tk1,126,400 was deposited to an  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Following the tragic rail accident that claimed four lives at Karwan Bazar in the capital on Thursday, the railway authority in a three-hour drive yesterday demolished illegal makeshift establishments, shops and fish market near the rail tracks. Around 100 people, including railway staff and police, and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police participated in the drive starting from the Film Development Corporation (FDC) gate, said Rafiqul Islam, operations officer of Bangladesh Government Railway Police. Divisional Estate Officer of Bangladesh Railway Nurun Nabi Kabir, who led the drive, said they started at 10:00

am and ended at 1:00 pm. More than 150 establishments were demolished, he added. On Thursday, four people were killed when they jumped on to the track of an express train to avoid being run over by another train. Five others were also seriously injured in the accident. One of the four victims whose identity could not be known on Thursday has now been identified as Asma Begum, 27. “All illegal structures from the FDC area to Tejgaon railway station will be removed. We demolished many establishments today (Friday). The drive is not complete. It is a continuous process that will resume in a few days,” Kabir said. “We will not permit anybody to occupy the places on and along the rail

tracks,” he claimed. Asked why they had suddenly launched the drive, he said: “Thursday’s accident was an eye-opener. We will evict these illegal occupants.” According to railway officials and police, several incidents of this nature take place at Karwan Bazar every year. There are two parallel tracks from Kamalapur to Tongi. As there is a bend on rail line between the Tejgaon crossing and the FDC gate, pedestrians are not able to spot oncoming trains from a distance to enable them to move away to safety. An illegal makeshift fish market near the track at Karwan Bazar is another cause for accidents. When asked why the railway  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Extortion on Mawa-Kawrakandi route spiked in the past two weeks as truckers had to pay tolls five times to travel just two kilometres from Pachchar Bazar to Pantun. The ferry services faced disruption in the two-week time because of strong current in the Padma River and the tolls were paid to police and local influential extortionists. Sources said the recent disruption in the ferry services led to long queues of goods-laden trucks that came from

How the money was sent

The Indian intelligence reported that a number of ambulances of Saradha Group carried bundles of Indian currency to Noida, Basirhat, Bangaon, Malda, Balurghat and Cooch Behar border areas. It was then converted to Bangladeshi taka, US dollars and euros before handing over to Jamaat agents. The Indian intelligence agency has a letter written by suspended Trinamool MP Kunal Ghosh, in which he mentioned the use of ambulances of Saradha Group to hand over the money to Jamaat agents. Apart from ambulance, the money was also sent through hundi and hawala.

The government is violating its own policy to determine the number of Bengal Tigers in the Sundarbans using goats as baits, making the critically endangered species even more vulnerable to extinction. The Bangladesh Wildlife Protection and Safety Act 2012 prohibits use of any kind of bait, especially domestic animals, in a natural forest because these baits carry various pathogens – viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc – that can harm the wildlife population. But Md Kamal Hossain, ranger of Sarankhola forest in Sundarbans East, confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that they had used more than a hundred domestic goats as baits during the ongoing Bengal Tiger Census. “We tied the goats to lure tigers to come to certain points in the forest where cameras have been set up to capture marks [snaps] of the tigers,” Kamal said when the Dhaka Tribune contacted him on Wednesday morning. Scientists would later process cam-

era data to determine the number of Bengal Tigers in the Sundarbans, he added. Zahidul Kabir, the divisional wildlife officer of the Sundarbans Wildlife Division who is coordinating the survey, refrained from making any comment on the use of bait. He only said they had been following the camera trapping method designed by Yadvendradev Jhala of the
