For the first time since independence, a judge on a bench revealed his role and affiliation with the anti-liberation force saying that he had been a member of the infamous Peace Committee during the 1971 Liberation War. Presiding judge of the four-member Appellate Division bench Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, also known as Justice SK Sinha, said how he passed information to the freedom fighters at night. This was made known during the hearing in war criminal Muhammad Kamaruzzaman’s appeal case yesterday. However no such record is available. Leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, Muslim League and other parties formed a Peace Committee to collaborate with Pakistani occupation forces shortly after the commencement of the war that killed around 30 lakh people and violating over 2.5 lakh women. According to records, formation of the Peace Committee was initiated in consultation with high officials of Pakistani Army after the launch of the barbaric crackdown on unarmed Bangalees on March 25 night in 1971. At one point of the 111-minute proceedings, the 14th day of the case, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam argued on charge number one against Kamaruzzaman. Mahbubey said: “The defence questioned how Badiuzzaman, being a freedom fighter, could take shelter in the house of Ahmed Member (fatherin-law of martyred Hasanuzzaman -Badiuzzaman’s brother) who was proven

10 CU teachers injured in bomb attacks Mahmud and FM Mizanur n Tarek Rahaman, Chittagong At least 14 people, including 10 teachers, were injured in a crude bomb attack on two Chittagong University buses in Fatehabad area of the port city’s Hathazari upazila yesterday. Chittagong University Teachers’ Association (CUTA), Chittagong University Journalists Association and several other organisations of the university condemned the attack, while CUTA activists staged demonstration on the campus in this connection. Blaming Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami, for the attack, CUTA President Professor Benu Kumar Dey demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and a ban on Jamaat-Shibir politics on the campus. Sources said Shibir men, under the banner of “common students,” have allegedly been continuing a strike since August 31, demanding the reopening of two CU dormitories – Suhrawardy Hall and Shah Amanat Hall – which are strongholds of Shibir. Nurul Alam Jewel, a Masters student of public administration department, told the Dhaka Tribune that although the strike was being carried out under the banner of common students, most of the general students did not go to campus since the beginning of the strike. CU Proctor Siraj-ud-Dowla said:
“The protesters have started carrying out subversive activities, but they are yet to communicate with the university authorities regarding their demands.” He alleged that Islami Chhatra Shibir men had been continuing their socalled protest programme only to serve their ulterior motives. Police said the protesters had carried out five crude bomb attacks on CU shuttle trains and two on campus buses in last 11 days. They also vandalised several vehicles during this period.
CUTA blames Shibir for attacking two CU buses, 17 nabbed In the latest incident, witnesses said, a group of 5-8 miscreants hurled at least 10 crude bombs on two CU buses in Fatehabad area around 10am.
