Bangladesh suffer humiliating defeat despite Mushfiq ton n AFP, Kingstown West Indies overcame their own atrocious catching and a defiant hundred by Mushfiqur Rahim to defeat Bangladesh by ten wickets before lunch on the fifth and final day of the first Test at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on Tuesday. After missing a succession of chances on the fourth day, the home side’s fielders continued with their sloppy work before Musfiqur was last out for 116. The tourists’ captain was the prime beneficiary of the butter-fingered Caribbean cricketers in lifting his side to a second innings total of 314. Needing just 13 runs for victory and a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, Chris Gayle and Kraigg Brathwaite, the “Man of the Match” for his first innings 212, knocked off the runs 40 minutes before the scheduled lunch interval. Fast bowler Kemar Roach finished with four for 64, making the critical breakthrough on the final morning when Nasir Hossain spooned a catch to Shannon Gabriel running in from midon after he and his captain resumed with the total on 256 for five, still needing 46 runs to avoid an innings defeat. That was effectively the end of the low-

er-order resistance with Roach trapping Shuvagata Hom leg-before and Gabriel dismissing Taijul Islam and Rubel Hossain for ducks in the space of three balls. However Mushfiqur was able to reach his third Test century, a straight six off Roach taking him to the coveted landmark and an edged boundary between the wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and first slip Gayle allowing the visitors to avoid the humiliation of yet another innings defeat. Bangladesh’s skipper, who was dropped twice off straightforward chances on the fourth day, was also missed at slip by Gayle and an even simpler opportunity to Jerome Taylor at mid-on before Taylor himself ended the innings when Mushfiqur swung to deep-midwicket where Darren Bravo held his sixth catch of the match. “This was our first Test match for quite a while and we looked a bid ragged in the first innings, but we showed some character the second time around so that is a positive sign,” said Mushfiqur after the match. There is the possibility that he may play in the second and final Test starting on Saturday in St Lucia purely as a frontline batsman as the finger injury he sustained while batting on the fourth day may prevent him from doing the job of wicketkeeper. l

n Mazhar Uddin The First Division Twenty20 cricket tournament organised by the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis will get underway at four venues in Dhaka today. 20 teams divided into four groups will take part in the competition. Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan will inaugurate the tournament at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium with Surjo Tarun Club facing Talent Hunt Academy in the opening fixture. Besides the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium, matches will also take place at the BKSP 3 and 4 grounds alongside the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah. Each venue will host two matches everyday. Surjo Tarun, Talent Hunt, Cricket Coaching School, Agrani Bank Cricket Club and BKSP are in Group A while Group B comprises of City Club, Bangladesh Boys Club, Eskaton Sabuj Sangha, Rapid Foundation and Azad Sporting Club. Young Cricketers, Indira Road Krira Chakra, Magnum Cricketers, Dhanmondi Pragati Sangha and Baridhara Dazzlers are placed in Group C while Khelaghar Samaj Kalyan Samity, Young Pegasus Club, Dhaka Wonderers Club, Orient Sporting Club and Uttara Sporting Club will compete against each other in Group D. The second round games will begin from Friday. l

It was yet another agonising exhibition by the Bangladesh cricket team, especially the batting department, against the West Indies in the first Test at St. Vincent. Even though most of the Bangladesh batsmen got themselves in either in the first or the second innings, the visitors failed to gel collectively as the home side cantered to a 10-wicket victory yesterday on the final day of the first Test. Despite the defeat, the majority of the Bangladesh batsmen will console themselves believing that they have contributed something for the team and that their place is safe for the second Test. However, as the Bangladesh batsmen were unable to play as a team and convert starts into big ones, especially in the first innings when they were bundled out for 182, the visitors could not halt the hosts from romping to a convincing victory. It was an all-too-familiar scenario. Ever since the Tigers’ inception in Test cricket, the Bangladesh batsmen have fared well in one innings only to come up short in the next. This was also evident in the first Test against the West Indies. The first and second innings of Bangladesh in the St. Vincent Test match were contrasting to each other. After being dismissed for 182 in the first innings, the visitors regained some measure of respectability in the second innings as they posted 314 before losing all of

their wickets to give the West Indies a target of just 13 runs. However, Bangladesh will be content knowing that they avoided another innings defeat. In the first innings, middle-order batsman Mominul Haque registered a fifty while skipper Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 48, two short of his 14th Test half-century. Opener Shamsur Rahman made 35 but was not able to prolong his innings. In the comparatively better second innings display, Mushfiq blasted his third Test century, Mahmudullah scored a much-needed 66 while opening batsman Tamim Iqbal made 53. Three batsmen – Imrul Kayes (nine and 25), Nasir Hossain (two and 19) and debutant Shuvagata Hom (16 and nought) – were not among the runs. Hence, although some of the batsmen got runs, the major concern for Bangladesh is that they failed to do it all together in an innings which would have made one of their two innings a significant one and helped to save the Test match. Even though Bangladesh lost the Test match, most of the batsmen will feel that their place is ‘safe’ and that they have contributed something for the team. Therein lies the worry and the team is suffering as a result of the batsmen blowing hot and cold in both the innings. Tamim, one of the visitors’ most experienced batsmen, might have scored 53 but he played a casual shot whilst being clean bowled by spinner Sulieman Benn. He was out for one in the first innings.

The other opener, Shamsur, who made a century in the Tigers’ previous Test match against Sri Lanka at home earlier this year, started well in the first innings but soon perished for 35. A loose shot in the second innings led to his downfall as he made four. The diminutive Mominul is unlikely to come in for criticism as he was extremely unlucky with both of his dismissals tinged with a considerable amount of doubt. Kayes and Nasir will be targeting vast improvement with the former guilty of going for extravagant strokes when the situation demanded a calm approach. Mushfiq and Mahmudullah though should be lauded for their contributions in the Test match. Mushfiq continues his development as a dependable batsman in Test cricket but it was actually Mahmudullah who required a significant score after a barren spell recently. Mahmudullah, inarguably, played the innings of his life as he made a patient 66 off 151 balls and shared a 130-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Mushfiq in the second innings which went a long way in ensuring Bangladesh did not go down to an innings defeat. The morale of the story is that the approach and attitude of the Bangladeshi batsmen towards the game needs to change. They have to come out of their mentality of securing their place in the side as it is the team which suffers the most. l

The hockey turf was expected to arrive in Bangladesh in October, but instead the turf will be arriving at the Chittagong port on September 12. “The turf manufacturing company Sports Technology International informed us earlier that the turf will arrive in Chittagong on October 3. St Gregory’s High School ended their 29year title drought by beating Dhanmondi Tutorial in the final of the Polar Ice Cream 22nd School Handball Tournament boys section at the M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium yesterday. Meanwhile in the girls section, Viqarunnisa Noon School & College emerged as the champions by overcoming the defending champions Sunnydale. St Gregory’s didn’t have to foil hard as they comfortably defeated Dhanmondi Tutorial by 18-7 in the boy’s final. The victors led the first-half 10-2. Ikramul and Sujan netted eight and six goals respectively for the Gregs. St Gregory’s won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1985, but failed to win any more silverware since

A sand turf along with the blue turf will also arrive which will be used for practice and is likely to be installed at BAF Shaheen School. Meanwhile, the federation has not yet decided when the installation process of the blue turf will begin. Earlier, BHF planned to set up the blue turf in December, following the end of the Under-19 Junior AHF Cup hockey tournament organised by Asian Hockey Federation in November. However, the turf will only be installed at the playing area as the practice area beside the field will still have the existing green turf. The budget of laying out the turf at the hockey stadium is more than Tk30m. l

Ikramul of St Gregory’s was adjudged the player of the tournament in boys section while Ayesha of Viqarunnisa became best player in the girls section.
