n Tribune Desk In her most strongly worded criticism yet of the US president’s foreign policy, Barak Obama’s first-term secretary of state and potential 2016 presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton said in an interview that the US decision not to intervene early in the Syrian civil war was a “failure.” She joined Republican critics and observers who blamed the US president for failing to do enough to support Syrians who rebelled against President Bashar al-Assad. The ensuing civil war has been raging for three years now, with Assad still in power and an increasingly well-organised Islamic fringe gaining ground, The Guardian reported. “The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against Assad – there were Islamists, there were secularists, there was everything in the middle – the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which the jihadists have now filled,” Clinton said in an interview with The Atlantic on Sunday. The first phase of the Syrian uprising had taken place on Clinton’s watch, during her term as secretary of state during Obama’s first term in office; she declined to serve a second term and stepped down in early 2013. Clinton is considered by many a strong contender for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, after losing her bid to Obama in 2008. “Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘Don’t do stupid stuff ’ is not an organising principle,” Clinton said  PAGE 2 COLUMN 2

More disturbing is that reputed global toy brands such as Barbie and Lego are no different. The levels of lead, chromium and cadmium found in some tested Barbie and Lego toys were higher than European standards.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

Children run the highest risks of getting exposed, not only because they are the predominant users, but also because chances of contamination escalate at the early stages of cerebral and physical development. Another reason why the risks climb higher is that kids often tend of put the toys in their mouths. According to the survey conducted by the Eco-Social Development Organ-

Toys should be brought into regulation soon considering child health,” he said. Apart from cancer, presence of high levels of heavy metals may also lead to children developing learning disabilities and hormonal problems.

Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy yesterday said the “godfathers of Narayanganj” were behind the murders of seven people. “They were directly and indirectly involved in the seven murders,” she said. Asked who the godfathers were, Ivy gave a vague reply: “The whole country knows who these godfathers of Narayanganj are. There is no need to mention their names here. They are still there and the people of Narayanganj are not in peace.” Ivy Rahman demanded that the main accused Nur Hossain be brought back from India immediately and questioned. She made the remarks while addressing a media briefing after giving a deposition before the seven-member official probe body. On May 6, in line with a High Court directive, the Public Administration Ministry formed the probe committee. Ivy said: “The committee asked me about Nur Hossain and slain Nazrul Islam as they were councillors of Narayanganj City Corporation. I told them how much I knew about them.” Hinting at the phone conversation between Nur Hossain and Narayanganj MP Shamim Osman, Ivy said: “Nur Hossain should be brought back for questioning about all these.” When reminded that her political arch rival Shamim Osman had said her relatives were involved with the murders, the mayor said; “Bring us to the trial process...I have no objection...

It is normal for toys to contain plastics, small motors, miniature wheels; but toxic metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium – not so normal. Most parents, oblivious to the fact, expose their kids to the imminent health hazards associated with using such toxic toys. A recent study has revealed that the toys – both imported and locally made – that Bangladeshi kids play with every day, contain high levels of some very toxic heavy metals which may result in deadly diseases such as cancer, replacing the joy of playing with toys. What is more alarming is that there is no specific guideline in place that may govern the import and distribution of such toys, although Bangladeshi toy manufacturers have to go through strict monitoring procedures for getting their products into the US and European markets. Rayhan Kabir, operations manager of Pebble Child BD Ltd, said: “When we export toys to the EU markets, we have to follow the EU Toy Safety law, which ensures that there is nothing harmful for the children. In the United States and Australia, we cannot export toys without certification.” Even the Bangladesh Standards Testing Institute (BSTI) – the authority in charge of looking after the quality of products – is not known for checking whether these imported toys are healthy for Bangladeshi children. BSTI Director Kamal Prashad Das said they had not examined toys in their laboratories and there was no law

Authorities call off salvage operation PCJSS man ‘tortured to n death’ in army custody Ashif Islam Shaon from Mawa and Mohammad Jamil Khan in Dhaka

The authorities yesterday called off the eight-day operation in search of Pinak 6 that sank in the Padma with 300 passengers, after having failed to even locate the position of the launch. Saiful Hasan Badal, deputy commissioner (DC) of Munshiganj, said: “Considering the reality, the river and weather conditions, we believe there is no scope of continuing the operation. No positive outcome is possible if we continue the search.” He also said: “At present, Padma wave is 5-6 nautical miles per hour strong and cautionary signal three is on for all sea stations; it is quite impossible to continue the operation in this weather.” At a briefing at the Mawa Rest House yesterday morning, the DC also told reporters: “The government, administration and the public have done everything possible. Unfortunately, we have not found the launch and so we are calling off the operation.” The DC said most of the victims’ bodies had decomposed with around 18 unidentified already buried. “Con-

The government has decided not to change its stance regarding trying Jamaat-e-Islami for its alleged crimes against humanity during 1971, despite US Ambassador-at-Large Stephen J Rapp’s recent suggestions against trying a political party for such crimes. Sparing Jamaat from the war crimes trial was a personal view of the US am-

bassador-at-large, Law Minister Anisul Huq said, adding that the government would move forward on its own way regarding the trial. As far as Bangladesh was concerned, the government’s first priority was to respect its people’s wishes, the minister told the Dhaka Tribune on Sunday. During his visit to Dhaka last week, Rapp, the US ambassador-at-large on war crimes issue, said no political party

should be tried for crimes against humanity, and the focus should be given on individuals who committed the crime. Without mentioning the name of Jamaat-e-Islami, Rapp also said the crimes in 1971 were committed by individuals and not everybody in a political party. In his reaction to Rapp’s comment about using “the criminal process to prosecute a political party or a large group,” the law minister reiterated that

the government had launched initiatives to further amend the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973 to specify the punishment against organisations for their crimes against humanity. The existing ICT Act includes a provision for trying an organisation for its alleged crimes against humanity, but does not specify what punishment would be handed to the organisation if it is found guilty.
