See: Mom

The latest sitcom of Chuck Lorre, Mom, premiered last year, but you can catch it on Star World right now. It stars Anna Faris as Christy, a newly sober single mother who is a waitress at Napa Valley but her life is made complicated by the return of Bonnie (Allison Janney), estranged mother and recovering alcoholic. This is particularly dark material, but Lorre balances it with perfect humour, creating laughs out of the most desperate of situations. To match the brilliance of the script, Lorre has hired a group of actors who know how to do their job.

Watch: Maleficent

Angelina Jolie returns to the screen after almost four years with another one of her blockbuster hits. She plays the villainous role of Maleficent, a vindictive fairy who puts a hex on the young princess Aurora in order to avenge the king’s betrayal. Maleficent is basically a re-imagination of 1959’s Sleeping Beauty, but from the fairy’s point of view. While the classic “Sleeping Beauty” was a great hit, it pales in comparison to Maleficent, which has a more developed character and plot, not to mention the graphics. The movie’s overall message is about redemption and love and this gives it a lot more depth than Sleeping Beauty.

Read: The Kid This novel by Kevin Lewis was adapted into a Hollywood movie. Through his autobiography he tries to tell the world about his struggles as a young boy to make it in a difficult world where he was met with violence and cruelty at every step, even by his own mother. Following an extremely abusive and filthy childhood was his fall to a life of crime and the way he puts himself together after being defeated at almost step forward is truly an admirable feat.

| Sabiha Akond Rupa It’s time for a metallic mani session Paint your nails using pretty metallic accents this spring.

Things you’ll need: • Turquoise nail polish • Transparent nail polish • Gold/silver leafing sheets (you can find them in any art shop/ gift shop) • Q-tips (regular or pointed) • Nail file

Steps:

1

Select a base colour for your nails (we have used turquoise nail polish because it looks great with gold).

2 3

Paint all your nails with the base colour of your choice.

The gold leaf sheets tear very easily so use scissors to cut them into small triangular shapes that will fit in the corners of your nails (to cover at least one-third of each nail).

5

Carefully place each triangle on the corner of your nails. The base nail polish should be dry by now but still slightly moist. Smooth out the gold leaf with a clean, dry q-tip to clear the bubbles and wrinkles.

6 7

Use a nail file to remove the excess gold leaf sheet.

Finally, use the transparent nail polish to apply a clear top coat to seal the base colour and design.

4

Now wet the q-tip to hold the small triangles of the leaf sheets.

4 | Tech troubleshooting | Mahmood Hossain iPhotos Cameras are getting better and better on smartphones. With the inclusion of up-to-date apps, the features and outcome of each image get even better. While there are dozens of Android phones with their own tweaks to their native cams, here are some tips for you iPhone users.

Inside the box

When you’re taking a photo of something you wish to share on Instagram, select “Square” along the bottom of the Camera app. The dimensions will fit perfectly once you’re ready to upload, cropping it to the appropriate measurement.

Check the back

Your object in focus can be distracted by things in the background so you always have to make sure to get rid of unsightly things from the back so the image becomes crisper.

Composition

The arrangements of objects in the image are also important. To make things more aesthetically appealing, place objects in certain positions. For example, if it’s a shot of a plate of food, you might want to push a part of the plate out of the frame. Subtle movements like these bring more character to the photo.

gadgets

Quiet storm | Mahmood Hossain Sony produces sound like the best of them The Sony MDR-10RBT headphones are amazing. Although it’s one step down from the magnificent Sony MDR-1RBT, this beauty is worth every ounce. For a wireless headphone set, this model does one heck of a job at keeping listeners hooked at the right tone and level.

Design

We all know how Sony gives special attention to design. They are arguably the best when it comes to designing gadgets. The 10RBT headphones are no exception. It looks and feels of premium quality. The built quality is of a brushed aluminium-plastic that goes around to reach the matte-black band. The cushion on the ear-cups are wonderfully soft; it’s very comfortable. On the right ear-cup, you have the pause/ play, previous track and next track switch, along with the push of the button to answer phone calls. Next to that is the volume rocker

Fix it

There are several top photo editing apps for you to download so there’s plenty to play with. This comes with practice, if you’re an amateur to the world of photography. No worries, plenty of apps will help you along the way. There are easyto-use to more detailed adjusting features in every app. Share your troubleshooting problems, write to us at avenuet@dhakatribune.com

Performance

While not every device has NFC, you can simply turn on your Bluetooth and the headphones will connect right away. It has to be said the headphones do come with the usual 3.5mm jack that you can connect to any audio input. Even though the sound may come off better while it’s wired, the average consumer wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The sound produces in what seems to be an aphrodisiac for your ears.

The bass is deep, but tuned just right – never overbearing. This makes the overall sound quality accurate. At first, everyone in our office had their doubts about the $200 headphones (priced on the Sony website), until they spent a heavenly minute with them. You can actually look on Amazon to find this exact pair for much cheaper; it’s exactly what we did. At Tk14,500 or less, you can’t go wrong with the MDR-10RBT. High-five, Sony!

On the go

The latest update for the iPhone has given users the Burst Mode effect. This is ideal for moving targets on your camera’s crosshairs. We’ve found ourselves in plenty of situations where we try to snap a picture on the move, failing to capture our desired shot. Just hold down the shutter button for your camera to snap multiple images in one go.

for your adjusting pleasure. On the left ear-cup, there is the audio input, USB charging port, and the power button. A pretty cool addition to this set is the NFC enabled ear-cup. All you have to do is tap the outer ear-cup to an NFC enable device and it will automatically connect, without having to press the power button.

Still the best productivity apps around There’s plenty of productivity apps for your smartphone, but there are only a few that lead the pack. The unique presentation and easy navigation set these apps apart from the rest.

Google Keep

This app is ridiculously simple. In fact, it may not even be at the level of others on this list, but that’s where the surprising bit comes into play. Keep is virtually your digital version of post-its or sticky notes. Jot down your notes by typing or attach pictures, either from your library or take a fresh shot. You can also take down voice notes when you don’t have time to type. The playful colours on each note can also be adjusted to your liking.

Any.do

Possibly the most popular of the bunch, Any.do has been out for a while now. But with the most recent updates the app is even more of a pleasure to work with. The minimal design interface and the easy reminders make this app a must try and download, if you haven’t already. This has been given a significant upgrade so it can definitely edge the others out for the top spot.

Wunderlist

This cross-platform to-do

manager is a detailed app through reminders. You could say this is a more reliable, professional way of taking down reminders through different categories. You can choose the date and time for each reminder, whether it’s in the Work, Private, or Shopping list. You can also create your own as you see fit.

An outstanding thoroughbred with allround abilities that are appealing both to the head and heart To appreciate the new but not-sonew Avanza, one needs to put all prejudices aside and accept it for what it is - an affordable family MPV. Sporting the new face of Toyota, the 2014 Avanza looks more refined than its predecessor with large windows and muscular lines forming part of its visual identity. It is a far cry from the model it replaces and, while the previous look wasn’t offensive, it looked very much like a commercial van and had that delivery vehicle persona. The new version most definitely looks like a passenger car.

Exterior

Apart from the front grille, the Avanza doesn’t give you any reason to think that it’s a Toyota. But that isn’t what it is all about, it’s about practicality. It sits higher than most MPVs, with a huge gap between the wheel arches and the wheels being clearly visible from any angle at any distance. The Avanza is aimed towards comfort and is fitted with a set of 15-inch alloys that not only improve the ride quality, but also make the replacement tires affordable. As simplistic as it may be, the Avanza is still no short of being pleasing to the eye. Frankly speaking, it has no flaw exteriorwise. Often we see cars that are design-focused and yet a disaster in terms of looks. But that isn’t the case with this humble-looking MPV.

Interior

The cabin is where the major strides have been made. The quality of the materials feels higher than before and the instrument cluster is cleaner too. The two air-con dials coupled with a built-in stereo system make up the humble centre console. There is no sign of the god-awful beige colour that haunted the interior of the previous model. The darker interior colours in contrast with the brushed aluminium trimmings give

the Avanza a more upmarket feel than before. There are seven seats to make use of, albeit with a small bit of squeeze involved. The last row of seats is better suited for kids rather than adults. However, the use of the third row hampers luggage space, but it can be folded for more luggage space if needed.

Performance

The 1.5 litre VVT-I engine is paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox, with a very humble 99HP at its disposal. Although the numbers seem a little weak for a seven-seater, the acceleration didn’t seem like the 15 seconds claimed by Toyota and it feels light as well. Although being a seven-seater, it still manages 13km/l inside city, which means less pit stops at the gas station.

Safety

On the safety front the Avanza is fitted with an antilock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution and dual front airbags.

5

The Avanza is a practical sevenseater that transports your family safely with the reliability of a Toyota. If you fancy an MPV that doesn’t cost you a fortune, then the Toyota Avanza makes perfect sense. It transports seven people, it is economical, and not unpleasant to live with in terms of maintenance.

How to prevent fuel contamination?

Fuel contamination usually happens when your vehicle wasn’t used often. Letting your ride sit on the corner for a long period of time, the gas is bound to go stale. As a result the stale gas will clog the fuel lines and injectors. The best way to avoid this problem is to use the vehicle as often as you can or at least start it once every couple of days and keep it running for a few minutes. However, there is a fuel stabilising additive called MAG gasoline treatment that you can use to prevent clogs in case you don’t use your vehicle often.

A tale of the concrete jungle | Tausif Sanzum

A lot of us have woken up to the sound of bricks being dumped by construction workers in the middle of the night. The eardrum shattering sound of equipments cutting through tiles have become part of our daily lives. While the city is booming with skyscrapers and buildings being constructed on every inch of land available, a lot of questions arise on whether this form of development is sustainable in the long run and if it’s doing more harm than good for the people of the city. Quoting an article published by BBC in July 2010, titled Dangers in Dhaka, the world’s fastest growing city, “many of the new buildings may be unsafe, and that the city as a whole is becoming unmanageable.” In addition to price hikes, accidents at construction sites and collapsing of buildings, one problem that is not addressed to the same degree as the ones aforementioned is the noise pollution. An article published in the DUET Journal in 2011 mentioned results of a survey done on 100 people. The survey produced baffling results as all the 100 people of the survey sample were affected by diseases related to noise pollution – “headache, temporary hear loss = 12.31%, fatigue = 17.58%, insomnia =14.36%, irritability = 27.57%, heart diseases =25.80%, others = 2.64%.” This has only intensified in the past few years and noise produced at construction sites contributes significantly to it. Especially in Dhaka, with narrow lanes and alleys running through the residential areas of the city, when a building is being raised, trucks, bricks, cement mixing machines further clutter these lanes leading to severe traffic jams. After the construction is over, many building owners just leave the residue on the roads which lead to various other problems. These issues do not end even after the construction is over. Tall buildings combined with narrow roads create a box within which noise produced keeps echoing which in the long run will have severe consequences. Got a peeve to share about the state of the city’s roads and traffic? Sends it to us at avenuet@dhakatribune.com, or post it on our Facebook wall.

Q A

My wife and I have been married for two years now. Before getting married, she used to be a very outgoing person who loved going out and exploring the city, new restaurants, etc. She was always been open to trying out new things. Once we got married, she’s tied to our home and shows no enthusiasm to go out or even have fun. Even if we do go out, she takes a lot of convincing and we probably go out once or twice in months. What’s the problem here?

Photo: Big Stock Photo: Big Stock

To really solve this problem, you’ll need to address a few different factors. Is her idea of fun different than yours? Is your choice of place or outing not of her preference? Maybe you should sit her down and really get to know what interests her and compromise. It could also be that she’s really tired, in which case you should try to share her daily responsibilities. Lovingly encourage her to open up to you and spend some quality time together – be it at home or outdoors. If you approach the situation carefully and engage in constructive dialogue, both of you can get more of what you want.

Aries (MAR 21-APR 19) You’ll feel relaxed this week. Many of you may face a temporary halt. Use your time on finishing the tasks at hand.

| Dina Sobhan I have a son who is 15 years old. He’s always been a bit of a girly child. He would wear my heels around the house, put on my make-up, and dance to Jennifer Lopez and that kind of music. In recent years, he’s started taking a liking to boys. He tries covering it up but it’s obvious to me as his mother. I hope to God that I’m wrong. I don’t want to force him to be something he’s not, but I don’t see how our society will accept homosexuality in the near future. What should I do as a mother? As you are probably aware, scientific data is pointing more and more to a genetic component to homosexuality. I’m afraid there is not much you can do to “change” your son if he has those inclinations. What you can do is offer your child guidance and nurturing so that he does not grow up feeling inadequate and unaccepted in an already conservative and repressive society. Having said that, Bangladesh is rapidly changing, as the West has already done in the past decade or so. Samesex marriage is accepted in Europe and the US, and most people are openly and proudly gay now. While it will certainly be awhile before Bangladesh joins ranks with those nations, you can take comfort in knowing that more and more people of his generation will

share his experience and together they will affect change slowly but surely in our country. And you also know that your son will have little trouble being accepted in other countries around the world, an opportunity he can take advantage of in just a few short years when he applies to colleges. As a parent, your only job is to make him feel loved and raise him to be a kind and decent human being, regardless of his orientation.

Taurus (Apr 20-May 20) You would be influenced by your health conditions and intuitions. It is likely you would have a harmonic week spent with your family. On the bitter note, you may seem a bit irritable. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20) Learn to recognise both superficial and latent sides to everything that is going on. This week will promote a tranquil consistent activity or state of complete serenity, relaxation and isolation. Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22) Don’t be afraid to set your imagination free. It is suggested that you avoid speaking unnecessary and stay away from meeting new people. Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22) Sunset will bring you practicality and determination. Don’t waste these useful qualities on empty activities rather focus on the big picture and bring your project home.

All work and no love? Q A Hi, I’m a-28-year-old career woman who had been working in a renowned fashion magazine for some years now as the assistant to the editor-in-chief. Our editor is such a nice man, he’s of my age and we are friends. The relation we have is very professional and neat but I have uncontrollable feelings for him and I have good reason to believe he does too. I just don’t know how to take a step without possibly jeopardising my employment. How do I put forward my thoughts about him and not risk losing my job at the same time? The solution is easy - find another job.

The solution is difficult you do not want to leave the job because you get to see him every day and it is a good job.

What to do? Talk to him and if he feels the same way about you, one must be prepared to find another job, it does not mean it has to be you. Or else talk to the bosses and see if they are prepared for the two of you to keep your jobs. Why not, if you are not silly and work diligently and are invaluable to your set up, it would be foolish to lose you both.

tease Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22) No sudden changes for you this week. Things will develop slowly on their own which will make sense later.

Beating gold-digging peanuts at their own game

Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21) Things will roll on smoothly in your love-life. Rely on your partner’s instincts for decisions. But watch out, there is danger of being lost within undiscovered desires.

A gold-digger is someone who will latch on to you for expensive gifts, year-long vacations and dinner at fancy restaurants. Are you making yourself a victim to one of these parasites? Be careful; it will cost you

Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21) This week you can forget being inspired. You will have another regular week with traditional subordination ahead of them. Even if no one controls you, fight your laziness and work a bit harder. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19) Quit chasing after success, arguing and competing. This week will make you realise your own worth so enjoy your level of comfort. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 19) Devote daytime hours to leisure or peaceful activities. Avoid new work and relax. You must not change the usual course of life even if you are unsatisfied. Pisces (Feb 20-Mar 20) It’s a sleepy, lazy and dreamy week for you. You are likely to demonstrate absolute lack of initiative but you might get restless soon enough.

| Adila Haque

When starting a relationship, it usually takes a while before you realise a person’s true intentions. Contrary to popular belief, gold-diggers can be both men and women. While most women want to be with someone with financial stability and not an unemployed slacker, a gold-digger would ultimately leave you for your boss once you fail to meet their expensive desires. Here are a few ways to spot these devils marching towards you:

1

Sizing you up. While it is true that many women are not capable of going an entire 10 minutes without talking about themselves, gold-diggers would size up your monetary worth in the first five minutes - your profession, your apartment, car and family heritage. Don’t be fooled into thinking she’s genuinely interested in you just because she’s asking questions; they’re a walking, talking calculator, measuring up exactly how many diamond rings she can swindle out of you.

2

“I don’t know what to do.” After the first few months, they’ll subtly point

Photo: Big Stock

out that they’re having trouble paying their bills, even though they’d be strutting around in a thousand-dollar LV bag. You’ll realise that they’ll be outraged at the thought of them selling their private luxuries in order to pay off their debts. They’ll look perfectly appalled at the idea of you offering to pay for them, but after a while they’ll “reluctantly” agree to it, offering to pay you back once the hard times will be over. They’ll artfully tend to your ego and make you think you’re a good person and what you two have is “something very special,” thereby emotionally blackmailing you into helping her out.

3

“Maybe I should leave you alone.” Gold-diggers will never be around when times are hard. When you’re having money troubles, they’ll realise that the mine they have been trying to unearth is now empty, and move on to their next quest. Be alarmed; they will not just go away like that - they will make you feel like you haven’t been treating them right and they deserve to be with someone who gives them greater happiness, if you know what I mean.

Like Kryptonite is to Superman, rust is to metal furniture. While it might sound like a mammoth task to maintain and clean them, following these simple tips will make life much easier While metal furniture were earlier limited to gardens and almirahs, they have now crawled their way into your homes. A lot of people prefer metal bed frames, sofa sets and tables as they give the interior a sleek look. While buying metal furniture make sure that you spend a little extra money and buy the ones that have a baked-on enamel or powdercoated surface. Don’t get tempted into buying painted or varnished metal furnishings – they might be cheaper but are more at risk of rusting.

Some useful cleaning tips:

Pour warm water into a bucket and add a few drops of dish washing liquid. In case you are scared of causing any discolouration to your furniture, opt for a few drops of vinegar instead. Take a mopping cloth or sponge and dip it into the bucket. Squeeze out the extra amount of water from it and wipe the furniture with it. Then take another piece of cloth and dip it in clean water and wipe the furniture. A golden tip – use a toothbrush to clean minute parts of the furniture. It is very important that once the cleaning is done, you leave the furniture under a fan or in an open space so that it dries of quickly.

AVEN U E T SATU R DAY, AUGUST 9, 201 4

A few DON’Ts when it comes to metal furniture:

Don’t drag them across the room as that results in wear and tear of the coating on the surface and once that happens, rusting is inevitable. Don’t let them bask in the sun or rain. Try to cover or carry your metal furniture to a dry area in case they are directly exposed to rain or extreme sunlight.

What should one do in case of rust? Fear not, you do not have to throw away your cherished furniture just because there is rust on it.

However, you do need to act quick to prevent further damage. Firstly give a thorough clean up to the piece of furniture following the steps mentioned above. Then take a sand paper and rub it lightly over the rust until you get rid of it. Use a metal paint to cover up any discolouration and your furniture is almost as good as new. If you’re looking to buy metal furniture items, Otobi is a good place to start.

Cervical spondylosis | Dr M Easin Ali Cervical spondylosis is the neck pain that middle aged and elderly people usually suffer from. It is a degenerative disease and its patients would normally range from 40-60 years. But nowadays patients as young as 30-35 are suffering from cervical spondylosis.

Common symptoms: • Pain in the neck and not being able to move it much. • Sometimes affecting and hurting the hands and shoulders. • Pain increases with neck movements. • Tingling or numbness sensation in the affected hand. • Sometimes there in no pain in the neck but the whole arm might ache. Investigation: • X-ray indicating degenerative changes in the cervical spine. • Osteophyte and lipping are seen in the vertebra. • Straightening of the cervical curve.

You may have been a bit of a glutton during Ramadan and felt all kinds of discomfort and continue to do so. Could it be Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), also known as Spastic colon or Mucous colitis by “Webmed?” It is a functional disorder of the gut, characterised by increased motility of the intestines, and usually leads to abdominal pain and bowel changes.

Common symptoms Due to an interruption of bowel mobility, cramping, abdominal pain, bloating and gas, diarrhoea and constipation will usually occur. Symptoms vary from mild to severe, depending on the condition. Proper medical advice must be taken if treatment is required. Keeping in mind the nature of this condition, patients with IBS and/or hyperacidity suffer a lot during Ramadan. The causes

of this syndrome are not exactly known, but a cocktail of factors such as stress, diet, eating habits, choice of food and sleeplessness are usually responsible for IBS. We need to be extra-careful about the kind of food we have for iftar, dinner and sehri and its amount. Since the three meals are in quick succession, overeating and heavy eating must be avoided religiously next time. Indulging in spicy and/ or fried food will result in further damage to your bowels. If you are suffering from mild symptoms of IBS, individual care should be taken to treat the symptom accordingly: eating slowly and carefully with inter-meal space. If your symptoms are severe, you must seek help from a physician. You need to understand exactly what kind of diet is most suitable for your bowels to cope with IBS; just make sure you have plenty of water.

Tips for next year It is best for you to start your iftar with something bland and drink plenty of water at frequent time intervals during the non-fasting period. Avoid over-eating and carbonated beverages - anything that causes bloating. Dinner must be well-balanced and nutritious and must contain fibre. You should probably know that milk, chocolates and excess caffeine may trigger some of those symptoms. For sehri, make it a rule to avoid spicy food and include plenty of fibre if you’ve been feeling constipated. Finally, do not panic. Following a healthy diet, a good amount of sleep and exercising regularly will help keep the pain at bay.

Treatment: • NSAIDs to reduce acute pain for a short period of time. • Physiotherapy - It is the safest treatment with no side effects. It includes electrotherapy, eg ultra-sound therapy, micro-wave diathermy, intermittent cervical traction, manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, etc. Advice: • Avoid bending forward while working. • Don’t carry anything heavy on the head. • Use an orthopedic pillow during sleep. • Don’t sleep while sitting, especially during a journey. • Use a laptop or a desktop at the eye level position. • Don’t massage your neck in a salon. • Don’t read while on bed, use a chair and table. • While watching TV, don’t sit on the bed with your back bent. • Use a cervical collar during work and while on a journey.

When starting out, what inspired you guys to start a metal band? The artist does not choose the art. The art chooses the artist. So it was with us all along. We started a metal band because we didn’t have a choice. We just had to. It was all we wanted.

Q A

Which song and album are your favourite from all of your originals? “Danob” is the album we’re most proud of. That’s not to say we’re not proud of the other ones, but with “Danob” we really found our own sound. The first album was a transition between fans and musicians, the second was still searching for our sound, and we felt we got there with the third one, which was “Danob.” The song we’re most proud of is “Sreshtho.” It was the first big song we attempted that came together so smoothly. It was also the first song we wrote about 1971.

Q

There has been substantial improvement in our media lately. How are you guys taking advantage of this opportunity? We’ve never really spent time thinking about the media and how to make it work for us. Our business is making music and playing for our crowds, and that’s all we care about. However a nice change from 20 years ago is that a lot of people working in the media now are actually aware of the band and have certainly heard one or two songs, so that’s always nice. As for media in general, we have a Facebook page and we constantly interact with our fans. We love that.

A

Q A

How has the band evolved musically since its inception? We’ve changed in the last 20 years, and so have our music tastes. Only Shakib still listens to just heavy metal. The rest of the band members have diverse music

interests. So all that clearly affects our compositions. Also, life itself has changed and that colours our thoughts and emotions. Our lyrics are a little better than they used to be, or so we believe. But no matter what, our music will always be hard, heavy and fast.

Q

How much had the band matured while recording the last album, “Noy Maash?” How has it matured since then?

A

“Noy Maash” was an exercise into seeing how much we can push the band to its limits. Coming up with a new song every month is an extremely difficult proposition and the band succeeded to do so for six months before burning out. I think thanks to this album we are much more aware of our capabilities now than before.

Q

How do you feel about the current music scene in Dhaka? What can be done to improve the scene?

A

I think rock/metal is doing fine in Bangladesh. It’s the pop/ hip hop industry that is not up to standard. Hindi film pop music has this wide array of feel good fun songs that make you want to dance. That’s one key area that the pop artists of Bangladesh have not considered. Metal is about feeling aggressive and wanting to jump and scream and headbang. If a metal band is not getting that reaction from the audience then it’s not doing its job. Similarly

I think rock/ metal is doing fine in Bangladesh. It’s the pop/hip hop industry that is not up to standard. Hindi film pop music has this wide array of feel good fun songs that make you want to dance. That’s one key area that the pop artists of Bangladesh have not considered

a big part of pop music is about making you want to dance. Instead, our pop artists are busy making emotional, sentimental, tear jerkers. I think the moment they catch on to this issue, we’ll have a much better pop scene in Bangladesh and we’ll stop hearing complaints about how Hindi music is destroying our culture.

Q A

Looking closer at the current metal scene, what are your impressions? Metal scene is fine. We’re getting really good new bands every now and then. And the oldies are bringing out albums, although very slowly, so metal scene is doing okay. And it’s good that nowadays every kid wants to be a rock star.

Q

After all these years, the feeling of exhilaration you get while performing, how has that changed?

Q A

A

The big change is that more people know our songs when we do shows, and that’s a real turn on. Nothing makes a band feel more alive than when they see an audience singing along with their songs. So yeah, our exhilaration

has been increasing year by year!

Q A

What are you guys currently working on? We’re working on the last three songs of our “Noy Maash” album.

What can we expect from Cryptic Fate in the near future? The next big project is the album we’ve been working on for the last four years, “Jantrik Golojog.” That’s going to be massive, if we can say that at the risk of sounding immodest. And whatever happens, always expect hard, heavy, fast metal from Cryptic Fate.

fashion

Heavy metal

How to wear this season’s hottest jewellery trend One jewellery trend that has been rocking the runways and fashion spreads around the globe is that for layered necklaces. Considering that this is pretty much de rigueur for brides in Bangladesh, this is a fashion we can easily incorporate into everyday wear without much fuss. Here are a few rules to remember

| Sabah Rahman Working the metallic trend is nothing to be scared of. The latest designs are nothing like the freaky versions from the 70s or 80s, although, if you can pull some David Bowie-esque looks off, mad respect to you. You probably have a number of accessories in your closet that fit the mold, but let’s go a bit deeper and figure out how to make this phenomenon work for you

Stick to the basics

Most of the hottest designers have taken part in this trend already and they sure don’t stick to gold, silver or bronze. Any shade can be made into a foil-like texture. The key, though, is to not go too far with these shades. Fuchsia and emerald green may actually make you resemble a Bollywood item girl from the past and not in a good way.

Graduated effect Since this look involves wearing multiple necklaces with one outfit, aim for cohesion by going from short and chunky to long and delicate, so that you don’t look like a hot mess. Collar chic The long cascade may not work with all necklines. Some of your outfits might demand a shorter “collar” look. You can create that effect by layering shorter, bulkier necklaces. Start with a choker and build from there. Mix it up There’s quite a gold rush now, but silver can also be eye-catching if worn right. Don’t be afraid to mix metals, but exercise a light touch. A few chains and chokers worn together might work; your biyebari heavy metals with your Boho beads and feathers will most likely not. Simple pleasures If you’re new to the layered necklace trend, it’s best to start simple and work your way towards mixing, matching and layering like a pro. A surefire way to do this is to skip the lockets and embellishments and start with simple chains of varying lengths and thickness. Once you’re more confident, you can start adding bling.

AVEN U E T SATU R DAY, AUGUST 9, 201 4

All about balance

Balance is absolutely essential when it comes to metallics. Have a hot pair of bronze pants? Do not wear it with a bronze top. Remember to keep the rest of your outfit as basic as you can so the pieces of interest pop out just the right way.

For the skeptics

Still not sure you want to jump on board? Start small. Try a dull gold belt, with your regular day wear or step out in some silver flats. You can even wear plain T-shirts with foiled decals on them. Metallics can be worn during the day as long as it’s done in small doses. So don’t limit yourself.

power behind it. This is a sign of confidence but let’s others know you aren’t a show-off or a peacock.

Stubble over This is the most popular of the lot, it’s the best of both worlds. You don’t have a complete beard nor have you shaven. What most of you may not know is that this style actually requires plenty of upkeep. Get yourself a beard trimmer and keep things levelled and in line throughout. This style suits pretty much any face. Having this style says you’re up to date with current trends, you’re in the know.

Nowadays the moustache usually has a companion, rather than a standalone starring role. This style gives off a defiant tone and can be seen as provocative.

Where’s the stache The upper lip caterpillars fell into fashion through men in the Middle East. Soon enough, the Americans picked up on this little trend and ensued the 1970s moustache craze.

Full and groomed A full and well-groomed beard conveys masculinity. In some cultures, the beard is considered a status symbol or a statement of intent. There’s an air of authority and

Crazy frizz We’ve got ourselves a bold expression through the unkempt, wild and crazy style of a beard. It’s the type of beard you’d see on old minors in 19th century California during the gold rush. It shows that you aren’t too fond of the rules and are a free spirit.

So fresh and so clean A clean shaved face has always been a professional and sophisticated look. Shaving your facial hair nowadays is going against the norm. Since the trend of rocking a beard has been around for some time, it’s only natural that it comes full circle. Deciding to go clean shaved means you don’t mind conformity, you rather not stick out in the crowd. More importantly, you like the classic look better.

My fiancée has a birthday coming up and I was thinking of buying her some new perfume. Which would you recommend? If you can find her own basket of fragrances, it’s not a bad idea to restock for her. But if you’re in the market for something new or just a change, there’s a very good variety to choose from. There’s Ralph Lauren Romance which has a mixture of tropical fruits and jasmine petals; it’ll be as if she’s spending the weekend by the ocean. Flora by Gucci is another fantastic choice. It has a range of floralbased scents, from sensual notes to a more delicate scent. It’s the perfect perfume for the city. Another wonderful batch of fragrances is The Scent of Departure line. The Bali perfume from the collection hits the right tone with sun-kissed mandarin, lemon, white floral mixed with amber wood and a dash of vanilla. It’ll be a go-to scent for those rooftop gettogethers. Photo: Big Stock

Cuff ‘em Danno | Mahmood Hossain

We’re not revisiting Hawaii Five-0, we’re bringing back a stylish shirt cuff The two-button turnback cuff, commonly known as the cocktail cuff, might be sneaking its way back into today’s fashion. Sean Connery wore it as 007, giving it the nickname as the James Bond cuff, while Roger Moore (another former Bond) was sporting it during the 60s on a television series. It’s a style that is worth a visit and definitely one to pull off because of its unique cut. The Portofino cuff (yes, yet another name) is similar to the French cuffs without the hassle of joining both sides with dressy cufflinks. It’s as if you’ve folded your sleeves back from the wrist. There’s an air of cool behind these cuffs. It can become the best way to finish off a sleeve for a beach wedding ensemble. They really reflect the sprezzatura – the nonchalant elegance – attitude of the 60s. You won’t find them in stores, don’t even think about heading to the nearest market. Just like any dress shirt, you should get these made. Veterans of the game will spot it

Q

I know it’s summer and it’s all about colours and there’s this dark red blazer I’ve been wanting to wear. But I don’t want to end up looking like a guy from the valet waiting on cars. How do I avoid that? Well, it’s recommended you learn how to style yourself first before making these fashionable purchases. Don’t choose something that you aren’t 100% comfortable and confident about. You can simply wear the red blazer with different coloured shirts and trousers or jeans. When’s the last time you saw an independent valet wearing his uniform with that much panache? Stick to what you know and play it safe, if you aren’t completely convinced you’ll look good in what you buy.

out directly so make sure you head to a tailor who has plenty of experience. These can be a great substitution to the French cuffs. Modern-day cuts

will flatter this style, as long as the edges are rounded rather than the ends being pointy.

Highlights gone Eye on haywire trends | Sabah Rahman

Sure, highlighted hair can be gorgeous, that is, if they are done right by a professional. If you’re looking to add some interest to your crowning glory, this shouldn’t be the time to skimp and look for a cheap fix. Executed the right way, highlights can add depth and brighten up your face and complexion, giving you an amazing boost of confidence

The shimmery metallic lids that heated up the club scene in the 90’s have reappeared on ramps around the world this year, and we’re loving it. Here’s how you can update the old favourite for work and play.

Iridiscent metal

This is all the rage, and not just limited to clothes. Just as we’re seeing bright neons and purples given a metallic finish for leather wear, we’re seeing jewel tones in make up with just the right touch of sheen and shimmer to pass off as metal. Hot colours to try include peacock blue, electric blue and autumnal mauves.

some extensive research on the good old internet. Check out pictures of people who have similar skin tones and facial structure as yours. Consult with a stylist before you decide what you want as they will be able to get you the results you want. There are a whole lot of procedures when it comes to highlights - full head, low-lights and much more. Take your time to get exactly what you want.

Two of a kind

Another fad that’s crossing over from the wardrobe to the beauty bag is the one for matching separates. Just as it’s cool again for your top to match your bottom, it’s cool again to match your eyeshadow with your lipstick, provided you go for a subtle, earthy metal shade.

Do

Lick of silver

Subtle silver and gunmetal grey are your go-to for rocking the daytime smoky eye at work. Use the gunmetal in lieu of liner, add a lick of silver to the inner corners of your eyes, and top off with a generous application of mascara for Donna Karan’s approach to this look. Emporio Armani went in a different direction, lining the lower lid with silver and using a gunmetal liner for the top lid for a dramatic look.

Golden morning

On rainy days and days when you haven’t had much sleep, just dabbing a touch of gold on the inner corner of your eye can go a long way to waking up your eye. This is a perfect, no-fuss pick me up for the daytime.

AVEN U E T SATU R DAY, AUGUST 9, 201 4

Don’t

try to stray too far away from your natural shade unless you want to go for an extreme head-turning look. Opting for blonde highlights is absolutely great, but it can make you look like a hot mess if they don’t use the proper bleaching technique. A lot of local salons still use Jolen Bleach, which is meant to lighten facial fuzz. When used on your hair, it will turn your strands into a cringe inducing shade of golden-orange and no one wants that, do they? Go to a reputable stylist who has the tools you’ll need for the shade you want.

opt for highlights as well as lowlights if you have fine hair and want more volume. Lowlights are just the opposite of highlights. Using a darker shade on the lower layers of your hair, while lightening up the top can create the illusion of a fuller head of hair.

Don’t

forget your eyebrows if you decide to go blonde. Dark eyebrows do not complement lightened hair at all. Ask your stylist to lighten your brows slightly as well. Yes, it may sound like a lot of maintenance, but it’s totally worth it.

Do

keep in mind that red fades the fastest if you go with that shade. Buy colour protective shampoo and use UV spray to prevent further fading. If you decide to go for funky colours like

blue, green or hot pink, the colour can leak on your pillowcases or clothing the first couple of days. Be prepared.

TRAVELOGUE|

Festivals metalheads need to know about | Shahamat Haque Putting mainstream pop music aside, metal is still easily one of the most popular and influential genres of music at present. Here are five of the biggest festivals taking place this year where metal enthusiasts can headbang to their favourite bands

Summer Breeze

on this list. The main event (obvious from its name) being Motörhead, the lineup will also feature Megadeth, Anthrax, Zack Wylde and more. This is the first time these major bands are touring together, which will be interesting and will open quite some room for review and criticism among fans and journalists. Considering the influence of these great names in the metal universe, this once in a lifetime headbang fest is something you do not want to miss!

Motocultor Festival

Summer Breeze is an annual two day long metal festival that takes place in Dinkelsbuhl, Germany. In 2014, the event will take place from August 14 to 16 and will feature more than 40 bands, including Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Eluveitie, Behemoth and many more of the biggest metal names out there. This is an open air festival, so make sure you’re ready to stay out in the sun for extended periods of time and bring tents or something similar if you want to camp out and not miss a moment. If huge mosh pits are your thing, there aren’t many places which can compete!

Rock Diabetes Festival

Many people associate metal with evil. To prove them wrong, every year in Trowbridge, UK, one of the largest metal festivals takes place, and all proceedings go to the research of type 1 diabetes. This year’s Rock Diabetes Festival will take place on October 11 and 12. After last year’s success with the brilliant Breed 77, Steve Grimmet’s Grim Reaper and a whole host of other cracking bands, it can only be extremely thrilling to see how they smash it again this year. Unlike the previous years where the concert was out in the open, this year the organisers decided to go for an indoor gig. Taking an average from past Rock Diabetes fests, the crowd exceeds 80,000 so expect a jam-packed auditorium. Join the party and rock to help mankind.

Motörhead’s MotörBoat

Motörhead’s MotörBoat will be sailing on September 22-26, 2014, on the spectacular Carnival Cruise Lines Ecstasy from Miami to Key West and Cozumel, Mexico. This is the most expensive, and probably the most popular metal festival

Mainly put together for the thrash metal lovers, the Motocultor Festival is an annual metalfest that takes place in different parts of the world every year. Being the oldest festival on this list, it attracts crowds of well over 100,000. In 2014, Motocultor is coming to SaintNolff, France and the fest will go on from August 15 to 17. It will feature a host of thrash metal’s finest, including Kreator and Testament. Other sub-genres will also play a part here, including the legendary Finnish folk metal band Ensiferum. Regardless of which metal genre you headbang to most, the sound of Motocultor will never leave your ears. It is a classic that gets better every year.

Eindhoven Metal Meeting

Taking place on December 12 and 13, the Eindhoven Metal Meeting 2014 in Eindhoven, Netherlands would be the perfect way for a metalhead to bid farewell to 2014. Being a very exclusive event, the lineup is small but sweet. Till now, the confirmed bands to play are At the Gates, Primordial and Urfaust, while confirmation is still pending for a few other exclusive bands. This fest has a tradition of always finding a few new exceptionally talented bands to play, so don’t be surprised if after the event you have a new favourite song. If you were wondering how you want to spend your winter vacation, worry no more!

A date with Sarina | Tausif Sanzum A mere five minutes away from the diplomatic hub of the capital nestles the first privately run five-star boutique hotel in Bangladesh, Hotel Sarina. On the eve of their 12th anniversary, we happened to get a tour to the luxuriously cosy hotel and we were left pretty impressed Although from the outside it is dwarfed by the neighbouring skyscrappers, the hotel has as many as 184 guest rooms. Once you get past the lobby which is intimately lit and elegantly decorated, you will soon be escorted by the friendly bellboys to your respective room. The executive assistant manager of Hotel Sarina Dhaka, Ahsan Ishaque concludes, “Being the trendsetter in the five-star boutique category of hotels in Bangladesh, Hotel Sarina Dhaka at the moment is aiming to break into new fields once more. The core objective has always been and remains to-date to provide the best possible service to all our guests.” We picked out some favourites which will give you an overall idea about the hotel in its entirety.

Amrit’s | N Anita Amreen

Specialising in Indian cuisine, Hotel Sarina’s Amrit offers diners dishes that are basic yet have the feel of a good ol’ home cooked meal – reliable, delicious and comforting. Unfairly underrated, this restaurant is a secret treasure box of Indian dishes that will take you back to days when grandma’s cooking reigned through your childhood home. While most other restaurants have ambitious menus and theatrical displays, Amrit keeps it simple. Although Ramadan is over, their buffet iftar menu is still worthy of a strong mention. They offered everything from iftar staples such

Imperial Suite

Luxury at its best only comes to mind to describe this suite. It sticks to the baronial wooden inspired theme of the hotel but takes it to a whole new level of lavishness. The suite consists of two majestic bedrooms, three bathrooms with state of the art amenities and a regal living room where you can simply lay down and relax after a long day at work while watching your favourite show on the gigantic plasma television.

Crown Suite

Far from being modest, this studio suite is elegant to say the least. In case you are looking to have a private rendezvous, you can always transform the informal dining room into your very own private meeting room.

Premium King This spacious room consists of a king sized bed, an in-room safe, a mini-bar, a bathroom on par with those in the suites mentioned above.

Picasso Bar Deluxe King

If you are looking for something more economical this is the room for you. It is more budget friendly but makes no compromise when it comes to comfort. After all the rest and relaxation it’s time for some exercise. Located on the 18th floor of Sarina is the gymnasium which is open to all guests residing in the hotel. The gym, although not meant for heavy duty exercise, is sufficient to burn all the extra calories you might put on after eating at their signature restaurants. There is also an open swimming pool on the same floor which will give you a view of the city. However, the construction work around the building might be a bummer.

as piaju-beguni to kebabs to murgh pulao and mutton rezala. Every dish, regardless of how basic, was so naturally flavourful and delicious that it reminded us why we loved these dishes in the first place. Take three iftar staples we love to hate: piajus, pakoras and potato chops – somehow Amrit made you love it for what it is truly meant to be - perfectly crispy outside and a hot ball of flavour on the inside. Add to that the rich yoghurt dip and you’re left smacking your lips in tangy satisfaction. If yoghurt dips don’t float your boat, you can always try their creamy hummus. Apart from the vast spread of appetisers, they had two interesting dishes that made you do a double take: the chicken chaat and the quiche. The chaat had the raw street-style flavour while the quiche was a mush delight of cheese. Just when we thought our luck had run out while we were just on a lucky streak, we tried the kebabs. Both

beef sheek and chicken hariyali could easily give the leading kebab houses a run for their money. The murgh pulao, mutton rezala, mughlai paratha were all well made but what really bowled us over was the halim. After a whole month of trying several different types of halims, never did we find one that left us without complains. The one at Sarina is hands down, the best we’ve tried so far – a comforting, warm mix of meshed meat, melted lentils and wholesome goodness. The dahi bara too, seemed like it was meant to melt in your mouth in spasms of creamy pleasure. What we loved most about their offer was how every item on their menu seemed to be made with so much generous care and was executed with such perfection. It’s not always that you find many things to love about a meal, especially a buffet, but in this case, you did. And how much.

The bar gives you the feeling of being on a luxury cruise. Open to all with a liquor license and with discounts to hotel residents, this might just be the place to drown all your weariness over a few friendly drinks. The Elite, Amrit and Risotto are their three signature restaurants with cuisines as diverse as Thai, Italian and Indian respectively. The décor is minimalistic but comfortable. To ones delight, the Elite which is their signature Thai restaurant has a chef all the way from Thailand. More on the restaurants in the food review section.

Since several dishes on their iftar buffet coincide with their regular dinner buffet items, we strongly recommend you try out this secret haunt.
