Under pressure, BGMEA to pay dues of Tuba

BASIC Bank now fears mass withdrawal of deposits n Asif Showkat Kallol

Agitating workers say they will not accept anything other than full payment of all their dues Hossain Ovi and n Ibrahim Syed Samiul Basher Anik Garment exporters’ association BGMEA has agreed to pay two months’ wages to more than 1,600 workers of the Tuba Group, but not before the prime minister’s intervention. However, the agitating workers have rejected the proposal demanding all their dues be paid altogether. At least 1,200 workers of five factories of the Tuba Group have been

The well-off BGMEA members will contribute to a fund that will be used to pay the workers fasting for seven days at the Hossain Market in the capital’s Badda area, demanding payment of three months’ wages, overtime and Eid bonuses. Around 90 workers have fallen sick from days of fasting and 15 of them, in critical conditions, have been admitted to various hospitals in the city. The fateful Tazreen Fashions, where a factory fire killed more than a hundred people in November 2012, belonged to this group. The group’s Managing Director Delowar Hossain was arrested last year on charges of showing “negligence” which led to the factory fire. May, June and July and the Eid bonuses as the banks would not give them the fund unless their owner was freed. However, the group paid all the dues to the workers of two of its factories before Eid. The fact that the managing director was in jail did not prevent them from getting the funds out of banks. “At 10am on Wednesday, the BGMEA will pay the workers their wages for May and June at the BGMEA Building in the capital. On August 10, the factory authorities will clear the workers’ July wages. The other dues will also be cleared soon,” said Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan at a press conference after a meeting with BGMEA and labour leaders yesterday. State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu told the Dhaka Tribune that he and the shipping minister went to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to discuss a way out of the situation. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed was also present during the meeting. Chunnu quoted the premier as saying: “Go to the BGMEA and tell them what I told you. No matter what it takes, solve the crisis.” He also said: “We have put pressure on the BGMEA to pay the workers’ dues. We asked them to manage by hook or by crook.” Later in the day, the BGMEA announced at a press conference that it was going to pay the dues for the month May and June to the workers of the five factories.  PAGE 2 COLUMN 5

n Ahmed Zayeef The government will appeal with the Supreme Court against a recent High Court order that granted bail to imprisoned Delowar Hossain, the owner of Tuba Group which also owns Tazreen Fashions, where a fire killed at least 112 workers in 2012. Deputy Attorney General Shafiul Bashar Bhandary yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune: “The appeal against Delowar Hossain’s bail is under process. A decision has been made to file the petition seeking a stay order on the High Court’s bail order.” Bhandary had opposed the bail prayer by Delowar’s counsel during a hearing on July 24 when the High Court bench of Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Huq and Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder granted him two month’s ad interim bail in a case filed regarding the tragic factory fire. It was the last working day of the Supreme Court before its month-long vacation began. During the vacation,  PAGE 2 COLUMN 5

A strong earthquake jolted southern China’s Yunnan province yesterday, toppling thousands of homes and killing at least 150.

The historic Bhawal Raja’s residence in Old Dhaka could be turned into a beautiful heritage site if it was enlisted as a protected archaeological site at the soonest, officials said yesterday after examining the site. Following a report published yesterday in the Dhaka Tribune titled “Govt blamed for destruction of Bhawal Raja’s residence,” both the Department of Archaeology and the Court of Wards under the Land Ministry on Bhawal Raj Estate sent separate teams to the site. The archaeology team visited the site – situated at Nalgola, Imamganj near Mitford Hospital – to verify whether it could be eligible to be enlisted in line with the Antiquity Act, 1968. The new management of BASIC Bank have expressed concerns that some of its biggest clients might withdraw their deposits of around Tk9,126 crore from the bank fearing possible harassment from the Anti-Corruption Commission and audit objections. In letters to Finance Secretary Mahbub Ahmed and Bank Division Secretary Aslam Alam last week, BASIC Bank’s acting managing director Kanok Kumar Purkayastha sought directives on how to persuade 46 government and semi-government organisations against withdrawing their funds from the scam-hit bank. The letter says there is a lack of confidence among depositors because of the bank’s weak financial status and negative media coverage prompting some depositors to attempt to withdraw funds from the state-owned bank. Besides, some of the depositors had already withdrawn funds from the bank during the last three months. The acting MD also expressed concerns that BASIC Bank would face severe liquidity crisis because of the large amounts of money being withdrawn, especially at the three branches in Dhaka city. Earlier, the Bangladesh Bank had advised the clients of BASIC Bank to withdraw their deposits on their own judgement. A total of 46 government and semi-government organisations each have more than Tk50 crore deposited in the trouble-riddled bank, with their total deposit standing at Tk9,125.68 crore. Of the total deposited amount, Tk642 crore belongs to Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (Bepza), Tk631 crore belongs to Jamuna Fertiliser Company, Tk595 crore to National Housing Authority, Tk501 crore  PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Deaths in attack on UN school in Gaza n Reuters An Israeli air strike yesterday killed 10 people and wounded about 30 others in a UN-run school in the southern Gaza Strip, a Palestinian official said, the second Israeli attack to hit a UN-run school in less than a week. Elsewhere in Gaza, Israeli shelling killed at least 30 people in Gaza on the twenty-seventh day of fighting. The fighting yesterday pushed the Gaza death toll given by Palestinian officials to 1,772, most of them civilians. Israel has confirmed that 64 soldiers have died in combat, while Palestinian rockets have also killed three civilians in Israel. In the town of Rafah, a missile from an Israeli aircraft struck the school where Palestinians who had fled their

homes were sheltering, witnesses and medics said. Ashraf Al-Qidra, spokesman for the Gaza health ministry, said 10 people were killed and 30 wounded. Robert Serry, UN Middle East Special Coordinator, said the school had been sheltering 3,000 displaced persons and the strike caused multiple deaths and injuries. “It is simply intolerable that another school has come under fire while designated to provide shelter for civilians fleeing the hostilities,” he said. Last Wednesday, at least 15 Palestinians who sought refuge in a UN-run school in Jabalya refugee camp were killed during fighting, and the UN said Israeli artillery had apparently hit the building.
