Make your very own glass-cleaning spray in less than four minutes Before glass-cleaning liquids were widely available, our grandmothers were making their very own homemade sprays to keep their mirrors squeaky clean. To begin with, there are hundreds of ways you can make your spray, the simplest form being white vinegar in a spray bottle.

Assuming many of us are acquainted with children who love to lick mirrors and glass walls, vinegar may not be the most effective option for you.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your home-made glass cleaner: 2 cups water 1/4 cup white vinegar 1/2 teaspoon dish detergent A squirt bottle Mix all these ingredients and transfer them into a spray bottle. Shake thoroughly.

• It is always a good idea to use warm water for your spray as it helps get rid off those stubborn streaks on your windows. Do not use the liquid if your glass is warm or when the sun is high; the heat will make the spray dry faster and you’ll be left with a filmy residue.

• Old newspapers and paper towels are almost equally effective.

• Try to use gloves while handling your ingredients if you don’t want your hands to be smelling like vinegar all day.

4 | Tech troubleshooting | Mahmood Hossain Cleaning those ears Some of you use your in-ear headphones (or earbuds) all day.

Whether it’s listening to music on the way to class or work, or trying to block out the noise at the office, our earphones spend plenty of time inside our ears. This can get dirty, nasty, and just plain out frightening.

Even if you are hygienic and clean your ears regularly, the earbuds will pick up plenty of unwanted grime.

Earbuds can transmit bacteria from person to person. We don’t want that now, do we?

You can’t just toss your expensive or inexpensive, yet functional, earbuds in the trash. You definitely can’t throw them into the dishwasher. Here are steps to clean your earbuds from time to time the correct way.

1. No matter the level of dirt, you have to take things slow and simple. A mixture of soap and water is all you need. You can use a dishwashing detergent with water for better cleansing.

2. Once that is checked off, use a gentle cloth and slightly dip it in the soap mixture, before gently rubbing the dirt off your earphones. Too much of it can leave terrible residue in the earbuds, while too much water can, well that should be obvious.

3. The next part can be a bit tricky. If there is dirt or dust build-up in the metal part of your earphones, try brushing them away with a dry toothbrush. You can also use cotton swabs to softly remove any gunk left over.

4. Some earphones have removable and replaceable silicone covers, which means you should detach them first before you start cleaning.

It’s actually easier to clean earphones with removable covers that you can clean separately.

Never submerge your earphones in water, otherwise the wiring will be completely damaged. And make sure you have unplugged it from your device before cleaning.

Shoot first, call later | Mahmood Hossain We take a look at the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom phone is held in the horizontal position. In the same position, it gives way to the single snapshot button situated at the top right.

Surprisingly, recording video produced equally impressive quality as taking photos. And for all those selfie fanatics out there, one word: heaven. You’ll be able to have very long photo sessions with you and yours. It’s possibly one of the best selfie cams we’ve come across. So Instagram away.

Is it a camera first or a phone first? By first glance, it looks like a Galaxy S4; the look and design are pretty much identical. The difference of course is the rear camera sticking out like a sore thumb. However, it does look like a proper point and shoot camera. It must be said there’s a fair balance between a camera and a smartphone. The features are nearly the same as Samsung’s most recent flagship. One thing is for sure, it’s much better than its predecessor.

The looks

They’ve placed a careful touch with its matte-dimple finish. The feel of it is smooth and the grip is even better. Although, there is that strange feeling as you move your hand upward, touching the lens of the camera. It feels odd to the touch, and it may take plenty of time to get used to. Another obvious would be its weight.

Don’t expect it to be as light as its siblings. The 20.7-megapixel camera with Xenon Flash does a pretty good job of nearly tipping over. Again, the imbalance might throw some of you off. Then again, sticking it into your jeans front pocket isn’t too much of a hassle. On the plus side, the features and performance are nearly up to par. The navigation

is pulled through Android’s KitKat 4.4, which makes it much more pleasant to browse through Samsung’s native apps and TouchWiz interface.

Main attraction

Let’s talk about that camera shall we? There’s a dedicated camera icon in the lock screen for easy access to when you want to take a photo on short notice. Opening the app is pleasantly quick, but then again the focus is heavily on the camera. Picture quality, as we found, was much better with the right lighting and when the

2014 Toyota Avanza 1.5 | Tahsin Momin If you’re big on family outings, the Avanza has a lot more to offer To appreciate the new but not-sonew Avanza, one needs to put all prejudices aside and accept it for what it is - an affordable family MPV. Sporting the new face of Toyota, the 2014 Avanza looks more refined than its predecessor with large windows and muscular lines forming part of its visual identity.

It is a far cry from the model it replaces and, while the previous look wasn’t offensive, it looked very much like a commercial van and had that delivery vehicle persona. The new version most definitely looks like a passenger car.

Exterior

Apart from the front grille, the Avanza doesn’t give you any reason to think that it’s a Toyota. But that isn’t what it is all about, it’s about practicality. It sits higher than most MPVs, with a huge gap between the wheel arches and the wheels being clearly visible from any angle at any distance. The Avanza is aimed towards comfort and is fitted with a set of 15-inch alloys that not only improve the ride quality, but also make the replacement tires affordable.

As simplistic as it may be, the Avanza is still no short of being pleasing to the eye. Frankly speaking, it has no flaw exteriorwise. Often we see cars that are design-focused and yet a disaster in terms of looks. But that isn’t the case with this humble-looking MPV.

with a four-speed automatic gearbox, with a very humble 99HP at its disposal. Although the numbers seem a little weak for a seven-seater, the acceleration didn’t seem like the 15 seconds claimed by Toyota and it feels light as well.

Although being a seven-seater, it still manages 13km/l inside city, which means less pit stops at the gas station.

Safety

On the safety front the Avanza is fitted with an antilock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution and dual front airbags.

The Avanza is a practical sevenseater that transports your family safely with the reliability of a Toyota. If you fancy an MPV that doesn’t cost you a fortune, then the Toyota Avanza makes perfect sense.

It transports seven people, it is economical, and not unpleasant to live with in terms of maintenance.

Interior

The cabin is where the major strides have been made. The quality of the materials feels higher than before and the instrument cluster is cleaner too. The two air-con dials coupled with a built-in stereo system make up the humble centre console. There is no sign of the god-awful beige colour that haunted the interior of the previous model. The darker interior colours in contrast with the brushed aluminium trimmings give the Avanza a more upmarket feel than before.

There are seven seats to make use of, albeit with a small bit of squeeze involved. The last row of seats is better suited for kids rather than adults. However, the use of the third row hampers luggage space, but it can be folded for more luggage space if needed.

AUTO CORRECT Besides excess noise and rough idling, what other things do I need to watch out for with my car’s exhaust system?

Excessive rust or broken bolts can cause mufflers, pipes, and other components of the exhaust system to hang dangerously low. This might cause hazard for the people driving behind you. However, these aren’t things that can be easily assessed just by peeking underneath the car. As a rule, we recommend you take your car to the mechanic, get him to put it up on a ramp and inspect the whole exhaust system. We suggest you do this at least once a year.

You are on a rickshaw and a torrid rainfall engulfs you. You curse the times when you actually romanticised rain scenes shown in Yash Chopra movies. The only silver lining is that you are on the move while many others are struggling to avoid getting wet in the rain by huddling under a single shed of a nearby shop.

Just when you thought that things couldn’t get any worse a car speeds ahead like there’s no tomorrow and a splash of water drenches you from head to toe.

Rifat Islam Esha, a regular public transport traveller says, “The feeling of mud all over oneself is not a pleasant sensation to endure so I really hope that some people will be considerate about driving rashly when it rains.”

Only 38mm of rainfall in a day is enough to submerge most areas of the city in knee-deep water. This sheds light on the poor drainage system of the city particularly in Dhanmondi, Rayar Bazar, Hazaribagh and surrounding areas.

Iqbal Habib, an architect and environment activist from BAPA feels that the rainwater gets stuck on the low lying streets as the water runs down from the raised houses and footpaths. The drains on the roads cannot help in getting rid of this overflow as they are blocked with dirt as such water logging occurs. This leads to an array of nerve wrecking problems including dysfunctional vehicles and camouflaged open manholes.

From the facts it is clear that it’s not that we have a huge volume of rainfall but it is the drainage and sewer system which plays the culprit here. Looking at how the authorities are playing the blame game instead of attending to the problem directly makes the situation scarier.

Tiptoeing out of the closet | Dina Sobhan I have a son who is 15 years old. He’s always been a bit of a girly child. He would wear my heels around the house, put on my make-up, and dance to Jennifer Lopez and that kind of music.

In recent years, he’s started taking a liking to boys. He tries covering it up but it’s obvious to me as his mother. I hope to God that I’m wrong. I don’t want to force him to be something he’s not, but I don’t see how our society will accept homosexuality in the near future. What should I do as a mother?

As you are probably aware, scientific data is pointing more and more to a genetic component to homosexuality. I’m afraid there is not much you can do to “change” your son if he has those inclinations.

What you can do is offer your child guidance and nurturing so that he does not grow up feeling inadequate and unaccepted in an already conservative and repressive society. Having said that, Bangladesh is rapidly changing, as the West has already done in the past decade or so. Same-sex marriage is accepted in Europe and the US, and most people are openly and proudly gay now. While it will certainly be awhile before Bangladesh joins ranks with those nations, you can take

comfort in knowing that more and more people of his generation will share his experience and together they will affect change slowly but surely in our country. And you also know that your son will have little trouble being accepted in other countries around the world, an opportunity he can take advantage of in just a few short years when he applies to colleges. As a parent, your only job is to make him feel loved and raise him to be a kind and decent human being, regardless of his orientation.

We are newly married and as our traditional society would have it, we had an arranged marriage.

Initially, I was clueless about handling a marriage. I always expected that my husband would be my best friend and obviously, he was just a nice stranger who I had just met and got handed over to. It’s been months after our honeymoon where I got to know him better and fell in love with his down-to-earth personality. He’s a lovable man and I would tell him every day how much I love him even though I’m not an expressive individual. I am surprised that he never tells me that he loves me back but smiles helplessly.

Sometimes he would appreciate my looks but would not voice out his feelings to me. By this time, I’m more or less convinced he’s not in love with me, and that he probably feels trapped in this marriage. What should I do?

Well, my dear, you are really in a difficult situation. How can one make someone fall in love with them? At first when we fall in love it has more to do with biology than anything else; after all we “fall in love” with total strangers. We are taken over by strange and pleasant sensations and our mind is totally occupied by this unexpected incident. Love, however, is a very different situation - we get to know the heart and mind of the other person; we share our philosophy about life in general, and that is when we find “the partner.”

May be you found the partner who is not “in love” with you, but loves you for who you are. Of course you want someone to be in love with you, but you cannot force it upon him. Talk to him about it and tell him you need someone who makes you feel special.

Create an aquatic escape to make your room come alive An aquarium can either strike out as the most beautiful attraction of a room or it can be a shameful little torture chamber for aquatic animals that you can’t find a place to hide. The difference between the two depends on the level of research you carry out while setting it up, a regular maintenance schedule and compatibility among the livestock.

Before spending money on a new tank, it’s best to consider the type of fish you want to house. Different fish have various needs regarding the size of the tank, temperature and pH levels of the water and diet.

Some do well in a community tank, while others can only be housed in a species-only tank.

Take a trip down to different fish stores. Take a look at your options and list down the things you like. The next step is to consider the tank size and check for compatibility among the species of fish you want to house. Learn as much as you can about the fish you want, but remember never to take advice from the salesmen in Dhaka.

They’ll tell you anything just to make a sale.

The general idea is, big tanks are for big fish and smaller tanks are for smaller fish. However, in practice, it’s slightly more complicated.

Smaller tanks are actually harder to maintain as they are more prone to various fluctuations, which tend to be fatal for the fish living in them.

It is best to get the biggest tank you can afford in terms of funds and space.

A new tank needs to be cycled for at least a week before you can add any livestock. A good filtration system is also vital for maintaining any tank. Set up the tank (without any fish), add in some fish food, keep the filter running and leave it alone for at least a week. During this time your tank will grow beneficial bacteria that break down the poisonous chemicals that build up in the tank. It is also a good idea to add living plants in the tank, as they absorb some of the harmful chemicals and use them as fertilisers.

Note: Planted tanks need dirt bedding under the gravel bed and a good lighting system to survive.

Once your tank is fully cycled, you can now add in the fish. The maintenance of your tank will depend on your livestock and their diet, but the general idea is to change at least 20% to 30% of the tank water on a weekly basis.

Note: Never do a 100% water change. It will kill off the beneficial bacteria colony and restart the whole cycling process.

With Eid only peeping from next door, it’s vital that you stock up on your shuteye so you are rejuvenated and ready to kick-start the day.

Drink at least a litre of water before tucking in as that will help the body store minerals, also drinking cold water at night will push your body to warm up and stimulate your metabolism even when you are enjoying your beauty sleep.

The last week is here and that means you deserve a treat. A really small one though but be sure to make each bite worth it. For iftar, you are still eating clean by incorporating veggies and salads. A fun spin on the veggies could be like this. Take one paratha, put in shredded carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, tomatoes, crushed garlic, and cooked/baked chicken strips; sprinkle some fish sauce and lemon on top and roll it up like a fajita and munch away.

Treat yourself to a scoop of ice cream, or a small bowl of pasta, or even a plate of sushi. However,

don’t go crazy on the carbs.

Remind yourself about the long hard weeks of toil and burn over your body and restrain yourself!

Look at the mirror. Do you see the nice curve on your waist? Prominent jawlines? Toned arms?

The workout drills from the past three weeks should shape and sculpt your body and you should be feeling as well as looking amazing!

Pace yourself this week and work on sculpting and toning what’s already toned. Start with a light mix of 15 minutes dance cardio workout and do another 20 minutes of either arms, legs, back or abs. You could do a mix of arms and legs, or all four dividing each session for five minutes. Improvise and work according to your requirement.

How did the idea of FunFest come to you?

We noticed, a few years ago, that Malaysia, Bangkok and other Southeast Asian countries have water sports as entertainment in their beaches. On the other hand, Bangladesh, having one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, had nothing that could be termed as entertainment. We have luxury hotels like Ocean Paradise and eco resorts such as Mermaid, but nothing to offer for beach entertainment. All we had was jet-skiing, surfing and speedboat rides. The boat carried about 20 people and in the jet-ski ride, someone else took you out for a

spin and both of these rides were congested and completely unsafe.

We saw speedboats, surfers and divers in the same beach, and, to state the obvious, it was extremely dangerous. The beach should have been divided in order to have the different activities in separate areas. We were visiting Cox’s Bazar when it occurred to us that even our country should have all those activities and that we should not have to go abroad to enjoy things that could easily be formed here.

Tell us how it started.

In contrast to what we were hoping, on doing enough research on parasailing, we realised it wasn’t a simple idea; the winds in our region were much too strong and the waves too wild. The idea of parasailing actually came to us when we were asked where we want to do it and we told them we’d prefer a place away from the main beach. We were given a place about 20 minutes away from the main beach - Himchori. It is an exquisite place, the wind speed was favourable and the waters calmer. Within a few weeks, we had set practice grounds there. On a side note, though, this January, an important organisation decided to introduce parasailing in the same beach and in only four months it has resulted in about four casualties. Then again, it is what other people have told me; I do not know if there’s any hard

evidence to prove this statement.

We, however, have not had a single accident in all the three years we’ve been here. We take all the necessary safety measures and we make sure we do it right. In addition to parasailing, we also have land sailing and banana-boat rides and in recent years we’ve also started bungee jumping and rock climbing for young children.

Q

What safety measures do you take in order to avoid accidents?

A

For safety, we make sure we take maximum precaution for all the components of a ride. For instance, in parasailing, we have a long Japanese boat that is not easily toppled over. We have dual

engine boats so that in the unlikely event of an engine breakdown there is another to sustain it.

We do not take customers if the wind speed is too high; I cannot begin to tell you how many customers we’ve lost because of wind issues. We have the riders wear life vests so that in case the wind speed reduces to zero, they can drop down on the water and float. In addition, we have weight restrictions for different wind speeds. The higher the wind, the more weight it can support. Even then, we have a threshold weight limit that we don’t allow to be crossed. We have also bought new parachutes that can support more weight. If a child wants to fly, we have one of our men take them. All our men are trained professionals

What do you think is the biggest stumbling block in the growth of this industry?

A

What kind of customers do you usually attract?

Well, when we first started out, we were hoping to grab the attention of mostly thrill-seekers and adventurous youngsters. With time, we found out that the idea of parasailing applies to all members of a family.

Our customers now range from children to grandmas upto 63 years of age. In fact, we have had flyers who have gone up six times in a row. The air time normally varies from five to seven minutes and when you’re up there, those minutes go down in a flash.

What are all the activities FunFest offers and which one of them do you think is the most popular?

A

We have land sailing, bananaboat rides, rock climbing, bungee blast for children and parasailing. In recent years, we have also introduced a 7D theatre in Jamuna Future Park in the capital. I believe parasailing is the most popular among our customers and it makes sense, I suppose; it is certainly for the more adventurous. We also want to introduce zip lining and an entertainment zone for the children so that all the members of a family can make the most of their time as true worshippers of fun.

To be honest the major hindrance, I think, are the technicalities. We can only operate six months in a year from October to May, because our beach is mostly underwater the rest of the year, not to mention the crazy winds and storms during monsoon. Contrary to how it may seem, water sports are not a simple notion; making it safe for the riders requires a lot of research and precautionary measures and it is a lot of hard work. We want more controlled water sports in the country. It is difficult for us to attract new customers because of several reasons. The first is their incapability to trust us to keep them safe. Most people believe water sports in the country in general are unsafe; we are not being able to show them how many steps we really take to ensure that they’re in safe hands.

It has not been a very profitable idea, but it can be, if we can invest more in marketing. Limited funds have our hands tied and therefore it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to reach new customers.

In addition, due to the country’s unstable political condition, most citizens have not had the chance to vacation out at the beach and therefore we’ve had fewer customers than we should have. I hope this year we get a chance to find out exactly how enthusiastic our people are in water sports.

That’s a ridiculous amount, how much is too much for a T-shirt?

You think that’s ridiculous? Hermés sold a crocodile T-shirt – yes, crocodile – for $91,500.

A lot of people will argue that you’re wasting your money on a shirt that may cost 800 bucks here in Dhaka. They’ll say you can get the same T-shirt or something similar in DC (the cool way to say Dhaka College) for a much more affordable price. The truth is you are supposed to pay more for quality. But you have to spend wisely. When you see the term “quality” on any fashion page, it means the specific item is worth buying. Now, the question remains, how much is too much? A T-shirt that can last you an entire year, without losing too much of its original colour and fabric is worth the purchase. And you don’t have to pay over TK1,000 to achieve that.

Make-up is sprayed on to the face by an air gun, using a fine mist.

Airbrushing utilises a freehand technique to apply make-up while manipulating aspects such as distance and PSI strength (air pressure) to produce certain effects and coverage. Airbrush artists will either use a circular motion or a forward-back motion with the air gun when applying foundation.

Can this be done at home or only by professionals?

For airbrush make-up, it is very important to know the techniques of using an air gun. You can do this at home, if you know how to use it and you have an airbrush gun, a compressor and cosmetics for airbrush make-up.

Is airbrush make-up only suitable for special occasions or can it be worn on a regular basis?

A. Even though it can be used on a regular basis, airbrushing is the

best technique to use for bridal make-up.

What is the difference between air brushing and regular make-up application?

The differences between airbrush make-up and traditional make-up can be jotted down as follows: • We use an airbrush gun to spray make-up on the face and use a compressor to control the air pressure.

• For traditional make-up we use a brush or a sponge or even our fingertips to apply make-up.

• Airbrush make-up can cover freckles, tattoos, birthmarks and stretch marks. But it’s difficult for traditional makeup to cover all marks or tattoos.

• Airbrush make-up is lightweight and traditional make-up is cakey and heavy.

• Airbrush make-up is waterproof but traditional make-up is not.

Strawberry Cooler Ingredients:

• Strawberries - 50gm • Simple syrup - 50ml • Strawberry ice cream 50gm • Crushed ice - 300gm • 7up - 200gm • Garnish with strawberries or sliced lime

Preparation:

Blend the strawberries, simple syrup, ice cream and 7up in a juice blender, pour crushed ice in a Martini glass and add the blended ingredients to it.

Then serve with strawberries and sliced lime.

Mint Cooler Ingredients:

• Fresh mint leaves 10gm • Lime juice - 20ml • Simple syrup - 50gm • Crushed ice - 300gm • 7up - 200gm • Garnish with sliced lime or fresh mint leaves

Preparation:
