Unnamed official confirms that it has crashed n Reuters, Algiers An Air Algerie flight crashed yesterday en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers on board, an Algerian aviation official said. There were few clear indications of what might have happened to the aircraft, or whether there were casualties, but Burkino Faso Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedrago said it had asked to change route because of a storm in the area. “I can confirm that it has crashed,” the Algerian official told Reuters, declining to be identified or to give any details about what had happened to the aircraft on its way north. Almost half of the passengers were
French citizens, an airline official said. Two French fighter jets based in the region had been dispatched to try to locate the airliner along its probable route, a French army spokesman said. Niger security sources said planes were flying over the border region with Mali in search of traces of the flight. Algeria’s state news agency APS said authorities lost contact with flight AH 5017 an hour after it took off from Burkina Faso, but other officials gave differing accounts of the times of contact, adding to confusion about the plane’s fate. Swiftair, the private Spanish company that owns the plane, confirmed it had lost contact with the MD-83 operated by Air Algerie, which it said was PAGE 2 COLUMN 4

In light of the UNDP’s projection for a strong performance next year, Bangladesh has become one of 18 countries that made “extraordinary progress” in terms of global human development index this year. Bangladesh has risen in ranking to 142 (among 187 countries), graduating from last year’s position of 143, thanks to its better performance in the health, education and gender issues, according to Human Development Report 2014 launched globally yesterday. Apart from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, none of the countries in the South Asian region have been able to change its previous ranking this year. In terms of gender inequality and gender development index, Bangladesh had fared better than India and Pakistan. India’s overall ranking is 135 while Pakistan’s position is 146. “Bangladesh has gone one step ahead this year with 142 position by graduating from the previous 143rd ranking. Apart from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, none of the South Asian countries has been able to improve its position this year,” KAM Morshed, assistant country director of United Nations PAGE 2 COLUMN 1

Although the idea behind the new Dhaka city unit convening committee of BNP was to launch a strong anti-government movement after Eid, its first official outdoor programme yesterday was marred by clashes and absence of senior members. Four advisers to the newly formed Dhaka city unit BNP convening committee skipped their first official programme yesterday, only a day after
their chief Mirza Abbas said there was no grouping among them. The new committee yesterday placed wreaths at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman. They were accompanied by BNP’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakrul Islam Alamgir. However, a couple of female leaders of the party got involved in a scuffle, prompting the senior leaders, who were very much present at the spot, to scold them for their behaviour. Of the four advisers, former Dha-

More than 50 former Israeli soldiers have refused to serve in the nation’s reserve force, citing regret over their part in a military they said plays a central role in oppressing Palestinians, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday. “We found that troops who operate in the occupied territories aren’t the only ones enforcing the mechanisms of control over Palestinian lives. In truth,
the entire military is implicated. For that reason, we now refuse to participate in our reserve duties, and we support all those who resist being called to service,” the soldiers wrote in a petition posted online and first reported by the newspaper. While some Israelis have refused to serve in the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, the military’s structure is such that serving in any capacity forces one to play a role in the PAGE 2 COLUMN 6
