Sayedee’s appeal verdict unlikely in August Arguments in Kamaruzzaman case yet to begin; four other appeal cases in queue n Nazmus Sakib There is no possibility that a verdict will be delivered in August for the much-talked-about war crimes appeals case of death row convict Delawar Hossain Sayedee. Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, presiding judge of the case, has not yet called the meeting needed to determine the sentence for the top Jamaat-e-Islami leader, said court sources. Moreover, the Supreme Court will go on vacation from tomorrow until August 30. The five-member Appellate Division bench has reached the decision of conviction for Sayedee by a majority view but yet to determine the punishment. The case was kept for verdict on April 16 after completion of the proceedings.
UN to probe Israeli violations in Gaza n Reuters The United Nations Human Rights Council agreed yesterday to launch an international inquiry into violations that may have been committed during Israel’s latest military offensive in Gaza. At the end of an emergency session, the 47-member Geneva state forum adopted a resolution presented by Palestinians by a vote of 29 states in favour, one against (the United States) with 17 abstentions (including some European Union members). Earlier in the day, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Israel might have committed war crimes by killing civilians and shelling houses and hospitals during its twoweek-old offensive in the Gaza Strip. Pillay also condemned the indiscriminate firing of rockets and mortars by Palestinian militants into Israel. “These are just a few examples where there seems to be a strong possibility that international humanitarian law has been violated, in a manner that could amount to war crimes. Every one of these incidents must be properly and independently investigated.” The UNHCR convened the special one-day session at the request of the Palestinians, Egypt and Pakistan. l
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the Dhaka Tribune that like the whole nation, he had also been waiting for the verdict. Sayedee was sentenced to death on February 28 last year in two out of
‘Jamaat is the ultimate beneficiary as the trial for 1971 crimes is running at a snail’s pace’ eight charges of crimes against humanity which he had committed in Pirojpur during the 1971 Liberation War. Even though the six other charges were proved, the tribunal did not give any sentence. The Jamaat nayeb-e-ameer was acquitted in 12 other charges. On March 28 last year, Sayedee reg-
istered an appeal with the top court, seeking acquittal, while the government lodged an appeal for specifying the sentences in the six other charges. So far, the apex court disposed of the appeals case of war criminal Abdul Quader Molla. He was hanged on December 12 last year. On the other hand, the argument stage has not begun in the only ongoing war crimes appeal case of another death row convict Mohammad Kamaruzzaman. Hearing on the convict’s appeal started on June 3. The four-member bench headed by Justice SK Sinha deferred the proceedings until September 2 following a defence plea. PM: Bangladesh to stop RMG workers take to the child marriage by 2021 streets again for dues n Tribune Report The government has taken up the target to eliminate child marriage from the country by 2021, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said. In an interview to the BBC Bangla, she said her government had already taken different steps to stop child marriage, and plans for enacting a law that would prevent marriages of children under the age of 15. The rate of child marriage had been brought down to 17% from 52%, the
premier claimed, adding that efforts to build better awareness as well as “focusing more on female education has brought the number down.” She also urged all parents to provide education to their children, irrespective of their gender. n Kailash Sarkar At least 15 workers of a factory in the capital’s Bhatara area sustained injuries as police fired rubber bullets and hurled tear gas cannister at them during a demonstration demanding immediate payment of wages and bonuses. Agitated workers clashed with police and blockaded roads in the area causing traffic congestion. The Satarkul area under Bhatara police station turned into a battlefield when several hundred workers of Fu-
wang Garments Factory locked into a clash with law enforcers yesterday afternoon. The workers had been demonstrating on the road by leaving their workplaces since morning demanding their dues. The clash erupted when police tried to drive them away from the road around 3:30pm. As police fired rubber bullets, lobbed tear gas canisters and charged batons, the workers retaliated with bricks. about bringing in Joy right now. However, there is some hesitation among another section of leaders of the party about whether Joy is ready to immediately succeed his mother Sheikh Hasina as the leader of Awami League and also the country, although at this moment, it does not appear to be too much of a challenge for him. They think Joy, who has spent the lion’s share of his life abroad, will need
to better understand the country, its people and its soil to be able to step into his mother’s shoes. However, Awami League presidium member Nuh-ul Alam Lenin told the Dhaka Tribune that there had not been any collective thinking about bringing Joy into the party’s leadership. “There could be some individual thinking about bringing him into the PAGE 2 COLUMN 3
